  1. It's been a while, but I just recently got back to reading the forum and looking at what other people are posting as far as new work. By way of jumping back in, it seemed like posting what I've been up to since I last participated in this thread is the right way to go. This might be a bit of a long one. Sorry. Sometimes you're in New Orleans. Sometimes you end up with a butterfly. Brent at Uptown Tattoo did this one: Jake Miller from Cathedral Tattoo in Salt Lake did this little ditch guy for me: I did a bit of a run of appointments at Great Lakes Tattoo. Erik did this one: Nick did this one: And Matt did this one on my calf: Javier Rodriguez at LTW in Barcelona made this crazy tiger head for me: John Raftery, who is also at Cathedral in Salt Lake now, did this snake while he was still in New York at Fun City: Ben Haft at Fun City did the tops of both of my thighs with a sinking ship and a rose of no man's land: And finally, Mike Suarez at Hand of Glory in Brooklyn was able to squeeze me in on Saturday and do this on my shin: I picked up a few little bits of filler here and there, too. Next up is getting my left knee done, I think. All of this has really just motivated me to start thinking about back/chestpieces. Further down the rabbit hole.

  2. Here's a teaser. All the linework on my left leg is complete, and some of the dots/shading - but quite a bit of both remain. I've got another 10-12 hrs booked for April and June - so I'm hoping by end of summer I'll have a completed and healed half squid pant. - - - Updated - - - Whoa. Sorry about the huge photo.

  3. I'll stop lurking now. I've been creeping on ya'll for a couple years actually, I started hanging around here before I got my first and only (for now) tattoo. I read quite a few threads and reinforced what I wanted. The process of finding a decent references and the right tattoo artist was fantastic. I looked through a lot of portfolios and talked to two artists the second of which was definitely the right fit, in terms of being stoked to do the tattoo and listening to what I valued. It was definitely the right person at the right time for me, and I was pumped to work with the guy. The creative process was amazing! I showed up a week or so later I checked out the stencil. I literally couldn't believe how great it looked and how pumped I was on getting that on my skin. So I show up for my first tattoo and proceed to sit for an eight hour outline, which was pretty burly, I was sweating bullets in the last hour or two. Since then I've found four hours is a LOT more manageable while still getting work done. Anywho it's been longer than I'd like to admit and we're still not done, but the last session got me seriously fired up on this tattoo. There was some aspects of the tattoo I really wanted at first, that I would change now if I could so it's not perfect but it's mine and I love it, and it's EXACTLY what I asked for. I love Japanese work and American Traditional too. In the future I'd like to do some one-shots that won't be such a commitment of time and resources. I now have huge respect for anyone with a full back or any other huge piece as I now have a bit more respect for that sort of thing. There are many members of this forum who's insight in threads has been really help full in finding what I like about tattoos and own collections have blown my mind (Hogg). Anyone reading this prior to getting seriously tattooed I recommend really reading several threads and look at the gallerys here and see what you like. Better yet get tattooed make mistakes and then get more tattoos that you like even more. Sorry for the novel. D out!

  5. Update: Hey, guys. I just wanted to thank you for your advice. Yall's words of encouragement were in my head before I lied down. I don't recall any endorphins kicking in, mostly sucked the whole time, haha. My body shook the entire time and I cried about three times, but he got the outline done in 3 and a half hours and I'm still alive and excited about my next session! Scales and shading in the clouds are next. Hopefully I'll be able to push through it. [/img]

  7. @dcostello totally crazy you're getting on a plane and coming into town for this. And you too @CultExciter, stoked to meet you! We'll have over 50 pieces to bid on, doing a limited run of t-shirts and a limited print run of the piece Nash did for the flyer. Without getting too long-winded, this project has really picked up steam and it's been a very humbling experience. The response has been incredible.. to see how the tattoo community has gone all in for this, and to see how positive everyone's reaction has been. It's been stressful but super rewarding and I'm already looking ahead to next year, thinking of what else to do, how to improve it... @ShawnPorter had some good ideas, too. Also have to thank @CultExciter once again for helping me out with getting flyers done -- dude, you were a life saver. We've gotten a little press, had a nice little piece up on Inked mag's blog which you can read here. (Disclaimer: didn't realize it was gonna be a straight up Q+A otherwise I would've tried to sound a little more intelligent with the As.) Attached a few photos for your viewing pleasure for those that don't have Instagram, since most of the online presence has all been through that. T-shirt design by the very talented Matt Arriola, a piece by Tim Hendricks and the last image is by Cheyenne Randall, who goes by Indian Giver on Instagram.. really talented artist who is one of the few non-tattooers that's part of the show. A bunch of you probably know his "shopped tattoos" work that blew up a little last year.. but he's also done some great work with Shepard Fairey and Honor the Treaties, an art advocacy group for issues facing native people. Check those guys out, too, really awesome stuff. The show is less than a week away so I hope anyone in the area can make it out!

Not a tattooer, but if I were in your shoes I'd hit that thing with at least a couple rounds of the ol' laser. Best thing is probably to consult an experienced tattooer about it though. Good luck!

  10. I have a lot of stippling on my forearm from Thomas and my answer is ask me again in twenty years and I'll let you know. My feeling is that, like all tattoos, how well it's going to age is a combination of how I'm going to age and how well the tattoo was made in the first place. I think that Thomas' tattoos will stand up because he's a really good tattooer and puts a lot of thought and care into his tattoos. Ultimately a tattoo will last as long as it lasts, and while I try to take care of my tattoos and myself, I don't dwell too much on the question and I try to get the tattoos that excite me.

  12. @xcom Fantasia is a fine pigment to use. I've even it used on myself. You can stop the witch hunt, and honestly, it isn't very appropriate for you to be talking about this on the board. I can pretty much guarantee it has nothing to do with the pigment.

  13. Thought it was time to bump a positive thread back to the top. I'm reluctant to say that I've learned anything from tattoos yet, but one thing I did notice is that old Asian art is suddenly a lot more interesting. Previously I would've found something like Chinese silk paintings beautiful but not viscerally exciting - which I think also has something to do with the way it's often presented in museums. I've hardly been to a large number of art museums worldwide, but in the US it seems like the Asian art wing's often hushed, dimly lit and under-trafficked - like, the part of the museum you walk through or past in order to get to the Picassos. But the link to tattooing has suddenly made me really excited to look at things like cast-bronze deities, or Japanese board game designs (there's a whole room of them at the MFA that's fantastic). That's due to looking at the Perseverance catalog and the tattoos that posters on here are making or getting. I hope this doesn't come across as patronizing! - - - Updated - - - Rereading this thread, I just realized that Pugilist said virtually the same thing in her first post - durr! So I guess this is a longwinded way of saying, me too.

  15. I try to if I'm going to be out in short sleeves for any length of time. If I'm going to or from work, taking the dog out for a short walk, running to the store, or anything like that I don't always use sunscreen, but generally I make an effort to. It helps that I'm not much of a sun person and have never been one, which used to bother me because I have that kind of skin that is either pale or burned, never tanned, and turns out to be really nice for tattoos.

  20. I was once 360 pounds. I can write a book about every type of scenario and the painful feelings you can imagine with regards to an overweight person. It has happened to me. Even at 230, I still have a good amount of those feelings no matter what people tell me. Anyways, tattoos are cool to look at on anyone.

  30. Awesome stuff so far! I've added quite a few of these to my list; really interesting stuff. Out of all of them, "Serial" was definitely the most intense! I ended up listening to it Netflix-binge style. I'm still not sure exactly what to make of it all, but I definitely think it was very well put together and very interesting.

  32. I think it was @Graeme who recommended it, but I ate at Blue Ribbon Fried Chicken when I was at King's Avenue a few weeks back, and I'll probably hit it up again in two weeks because it's close, cheap, and good. I got a sandwich, which was solid, but I want to try their straight up fried chicken next time.

@Graeme, do you put sun screen on your arm? I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I can't recall. I always see these old bikers with near unrecognizable black on their forearms and assume its from the sun beating the ink. Or it could just be quality of work, can't really tell.

  36. Hey guys, a quick n00b question: how well do you think stippled/dotwork tattoos age? Everyone here seems to agree on the importance of outlines in making a tattoo last, but that mandala doesn't have one. Just curious. ( @losParanoyas Sorry to use you as an example, haha. I'm getting work from Thomas again soon, so it's not like I'm picking on you/your artist. Excellent tattoos, by the way.)

  39. Great job! If you are shaking, try getting some sugar in you and make sure you are warm enough. I shook like a leaf at the end of my first two sessions, but did some research here and started wearing two hoodies backwards and leggings under sweatpants. And sometimes even gloves, but I get cold easily.

  41. For further reading there's also: Blue Tattoo - University of Nebraska Press I haven't read this yet but should rectify that soon, since her other book pushed me to get more tattoos. Some of the Kurdish tattoos that @Pugilist posted about recently, though the designs are pretty different, reminded me slightly of Olive Oatman's tattoo in terms of placement and overall effect.

    The ladies thread

This is very timely. The other day I was shopping for athletic clothing, and the owner of the shop -- this tiny, very polished older woman, probably in her early sixties -- asked me about my tattoos. Turns out her husband 'studies' them and travels all over to get tattooed. We got to talking about my tattooer and I mentioned that he was in Brighton recently, and she absolutely lit up. 'Oh, those huge tattoo conventions are just amazing!' I haven't even been to one. I don't even know. I wouldn't have expected any of that from her in a million years, and I find that so freakin' cool.

  44. I'm quoting you but addressing all. Yes, we do sarcasm here. But like any group of people in the real physical world, you can't go waving around sarcasm immediately without feeling folks out first, sniffing butts and being really obvious in the beginning that you are being sarcastic. Believe me, we LOVE sarcasm here, and foster conversations and people who enjoy the art. But just like in the real world, you can easily get rebuffed if you aren't being cognizant of basic social graces, which are so much harder to make obvious through a keyboard. And I suspect that's what you are feeling now. Don't turn around and call this group cliquey and passive aggressive as a result - read around, absorb who people are and when/why some conversations (and sarcasm) are had. Or, huff off and demand your account be deleted. Your choice of course. AND NOW BACK TO WHAT IS IMPORTANT. Awesome, @losParanoyas!

  49. Bit of a long break from LST but I am still alive and slowly chipping away at my backpiece. Had a decent break from tattooing over xmas which was great but back to the grind now. The snake has taken quite a while but almost finished now. Each scale of the snake has 3-4 different shades of green so has chewed through some time.
