Welcome. There's a lot of great stuff here, but if you want to get inspired by real tattoo artists, turn off your computer, go in to a tattoo shop and get tattooed.

  3. I was once 360 pounds. I can write a book about every type of scenario and the painful feelings you can imagine with regards to an overweight person. It has happened to me. Even at 230, I still have a good amount of those feelings no matter what people tell me. Anyways, tattoos are cool to look at on anyone.

    The ladies thread

This is very timely. The other day I was shopping for athletic clothing, and the owner of the shop -- this tiny, very polished older woman, probably in her early sixties -- asked me about my tattoos. Turns out her husband 'studies' them and travels all over to get tattooed. We got to talking about my tattooer and I mentioned that he was in Brighton recently, and she absolutely lit up. 'Oh, those huge tattoo conventions are just amazing!' I haven't even been to one. I don't even know. I wouldn't have expected any of that from her in a million years, and I find that so freakin' cool.

  6. @dcostello totally crazy you're getting on a plane and coming into town for this. And you too @CultExciter, stoked to meet you! We'll have over 50 pieces to bid on, doing a limited run of t-shirts and a limited print run of the piece Nash did for the flyer. Without getting too long-winded, this project has really picked up steam and it's been a very humbling experience. The response has been incredible.. to see how the tattoo community has gone all in for this, and to see how positive everyone's reaction has been. It's been stressful but super rewarding and I'm already looking ahead to next year, thinking of what else to do, how to improve it... @ShawnPorter had some good ideas, too. Also have to thank @CultExciter once again for helping me out with getting flyers done -- dude, you were a life saver. We've gotten a little press, had a nice little piece up on Inked mag's blog which you can read here. (Disclaimer: didn't realize it was gonna be a straight up Q+A otherwise I would've tried to sound a little more intelligent with the As.) Attached a few photos for your viewing pleasure for those that don't have Instagram, since most of the online presence has all been through that. T-shirt design by the very talented Matt Arriola, a piece by Tim Hendricks and the last image is by Cheyenne Randall, who goes by Indian Giver on Instagram.. really talented artist who is one of the few non-tattooers that's part of the show. A bunch of you probably know his "shopped tattoos" work that blew up a little last year.. but he's also done some great work with Shepard Fairey and Honor the Treaties, an art advocacy group for issues facing native people. Check those guys out, too, really awesome stuff. The show is less than a week away so I hope anyone in the area can make it out!

  8. I mostly listen to comedy related podcasts with a side of nerdy information, here's what I listen to when I draw and/or lay in bed restlessly (yay insomnia!) The Nerdist: 3 nerdy comedians (Chris Hardwick, Jonah Ray and Matt Mira) discuss comedy, pop culture, and all things nerdy. The first 60ish episodes all have special guests, comedians, actors, musicians, etc. after that they started doing an extra episode each week with just the hosts, so they still have guests all the time, but also talk amongst themselves. Very funny, and it can give you a different look at "show business" The Cracked Podcast: List based comedy website, Cracked, in podcast form! These guys are hilarious and very well researched for each weeks subject, they also nerd out about comedy, but they also have discussions on just a whole bunch of cool topics that I enjoy hearing new perspectives on. Scroll through the episode list and see if any topics pique your interest, I'm sure after a couple you'll want to go through and hear them all. Unpopular Opinion: Adam Tod Brown, another Cracked writer has his own podcast, he's a huge dick and all the comments on his articles are pretty much hating on him. I think he's the perfect kind of sarcastic asshole so I like listening once in a while. SMODCAST: Kevin Smith and Scott Mosher chatting it up about making movies together, life, and comics. The Thrilling Adventure Hour! This is a comedy show in LA in the form of an old timey radio show, it's recorded live, they have different comedians and actors on most episodes, and they act out a number of different scenes. Funny stuff. Welcome to Night Vale: This show is fantastic. A radio show played in the form of community updates in a fictional desert town called Night Vale. The dark, twisted, weird, Lovecraftian goings on in this mysterious place will keep you on the edge of your seat. If you ignore all my other suggestions, just listen to this, it's awesome. All hail the glow cloud!

I had a real bad 2014 and got back into the tattoo game in January, having a tiger head and panther head on the inside of my upper arms. Going for round 2 on the panther on March 4th, round 3 on the tiger head and fill in work around it on March 20th. The shop is Studio 69 in Ronkonkoma NY, the artist is Tori.

  11. So that post recently about the straight edge podcast got me to start listening to podcasts, and I realized how awesome they were. Personally, they are great for me as a long haul trucker, because they stimulate my brain a little bit more then music that just ends up being background noise. I figured we can share our favorites and maybe all find something new to enjoy. Whether they are tattoo related or not, or on any subject, post the ones that you find interesting and maybe a brief description. As I'm very very new to this, so far I only have two to share. "BBC World Service: Newshour" updated twice daily, they seem to focus on the biggest news issues around the world that day, and go fairly in depth on those instead of skimming over a bunch of smaller news items. "TED Radio Hour" Similar concept to TED Talks, except they have one presenter, then they choose a subject and get several different expert opinions or view points on that subject. They often play segments from those expert's TED talks, but much of it also comes in interview form.

    Pre and post-tattoo rituals

Do whatever you do when you are trying very hard not to get sick. Like Airborne, vitamins, lots of water, eating the right stuff. I start that maybe 3-4 days before long sessions because I also have a drive before and after, and my sessions end very early in the morning. So you want to be as healthy as possible 'cause might very well feel trashed after so keep up that stuff for a couple days after your session, too. Some people get sick (aka "tattoo flu") after long sessions because you get beat up. Once I was exposed to a bug the day I had a really tough session and I was sick for a couple weeks after that.

    Pre and post-tattoo rituals

Before I go in I cook my self a nice chicken breast smoother in mushroom with a light coat of home made Asian sesame dressing, followed with a small green salad and a yougurt for desert. During the session, I go in prepped with a small hand held cooler with ice and home made OJ and several bottles of water, I also bring snacks like veggie chips and dry fruits.. All made by my wife :) Post session I eat a grilled chicken salad followed with a granola bar and OJ (for my sugar issues... Fuck u diabetes!!!) I than do a couple of chores and make sure my sugar stays where it needs too. Than do the husband/dad part (helps me relax before bed...) And than is sleep time. :)

  18. Very important to tell the artist that you are a diabetic right up front. I've heard from an artist that she had a patient pass out during a tattoo. So now she asks everyone.

  23. I'm quoting you but addressing all. Yes, we do sarcasm here. But like any group of people in the real physical world, you can't go waving around sarcasm immediately without feeling folks out first, sniffing butts and being really obvious in the beginning that you are being sarcastic. Believe me, we LOVE sarcasm here, and foster conversations and people who enjoy the art. But just like in the real world, you can easily get rebuffed if you aren't being cognizant of basic social graces, which are so much harder to make obvious through a keyboard. And I suspect that's what you are feeling now. Don't turn around and call this group cliquey and passive aggressive as a result - read around, absorb who people are and when/why some conversations (and sarcasm) are had. Or, huff off and demand your account be deleted. Your choice of course. AND NOW BACK TO WHAT IS IMPORTANT. Awesome, @losParanoyas!

  25. Did another six hours yesterday covering the waist to knees. I watched a couple of movies which helped keep my mind off everything, although I found the ass/legs to be way easier than the lower back. We've got 10 hours total so far, and the next appointment is only in a few weeks, woot!

  36. I have to force myself to eat a decent meal an hour or so before getting tattooed, take a long walk and pick up a bottle of water, some kind of fruit juice, and snacks on way to shop. Am always so nervous I have trouble eating the day of. I'm afraid no matter how little/much water I drink the day of, and pee before the session begins, I still have to get up mid tattoo to pee. Afterward, I get home, have a drink and some food, watch a movie, take an Advil, nap (if it's early enough in the day), countdown until I can shower, take another Advil if I'm hurting, eat dinner, then go to bed. The day before I eat really really well, not drink alcohol, drink lots of water, and go to bed early.

i always tell people to get the tattoo they want, where they want it. don't let friends or others opinions of size/pain/location of tattoo affect your decisions.
