I made a little video

Marius Meyer was kind enough to let me shoot some video while he put the finishing touches on my friend @Wilhell's back piece. Hope you enjoy it! (Sorry German LSTers! This unfortunately won't play in your country due to the licensing restrictions of the soundtrack)20 points -
Aw yeah, it's really coming together now. Sadly, Dana says he can finish in 1 more session. Picture stolen from his Instagram. If you don't follow him by now, you should @danahelmuth.16 points

Having gotten into collecting tattoos, I've a new found appreciation and fondness of peonies. Currently wear three different peonies from three different artists (Henning, Rubendall, Wendy Pham) and will definitely be adding more in the future. I would love to see different interpretations of peonies collected from different artists or hear who you think does nice peonies. I'm kicking around the idea of sleeving my knee and lower leg in peonies, either from one artist or a collection of artists. I'll share two artists off the bat that have been recommended to me: Matt Deverson from Australia: Rodrigo Souto working in the UK and is actually coming out with a peony book!10 points

My peonies from Rodrigo Souto (brand new in this picture so very swollen, nicked from his Instagram. They've healed up perfectly). He's a lovely bloke too.8 points -

Tattoo Addiction and my new plan
cibo and 5 others reacted to smiling.politely for a topic
"Tattoos are not an addiction; they are a collection. A tattoo collector is just like a conventional art collector who buys a painting, hangs it on the wall, and then moves on to acquire the next, unique piece. Tattoo collecting is a spiritual pursuit, while addiction is a physiological need. Addicts repeatedly take the same drug over and over without limit. A tattoo collection has variety, and it has an end. Once you collect the whole set, you're done. As you complete your tattoo collection, you yourself become art." -Horiyoshi III6 points -

I (now) know this sort of thread can make people here feel like pulling their teeth out but the patience and effort of LSTers is a great thing and I remain eternally grateful. Honestly. So, despite the shame of bumping this I'm adding photos of the finished project 'cause it's maybe nice to have it all together. I already put them on Latest Tattoo Lowdown though, wasn't thinking! I did take an enormous mass of over thought out context and reference photos in but that went down fine and was actually appreciated. Balanced it out by giving him free choice on what to use from it all and full control on colour and placement. I like to think it worked out nice. Back again in November for a start on the next bit of me.5 points -

Let's be clear: neither getting tattooed nor not getting tattooed helps to assert you as an "individual" who is outside some kind of norm. Subcultures are cultures too.4 points
-
I might be in the minority here in having this opinion, but I hope the general public doesn't stop seeing tattoos and tattooed people in a negative light. I have a hard time having sympathy or patience for people who claim that they're discriminated against because of their tattoos, especially when these people work in shitty low-wage, low-job security jobs. Where I work I saw a guy with a nice neck tattoo have an interview to be a busboy. Guess what? He didn't get the job, because if you're getting your neck tattooed while applying for jobs that pretty much any chump off the street can competently do, you're a dumbass. I probably wouldn't hire you either. For me, part of getting tattooed and becoming an increasingly heavily tattooed person is accepting and taking on something that most people don't understand and being okay with it. I think that responsibility, that willingness to put yourself at the margins, is an important part of getting tattooed, especially when into getting into less concealable areas.4 points

This thought came to be after the last session - I've got this 9 month relationship with this random guy, session after session. It will eventually end - I don't know when - and the "breakup" will occur - will I mourn? :-) What an interesting thought. I am so invested in this piece and it's dominated several aspects of my life (including that I haven't run a single race all year!!!), but I realize I'll be sad when the process is over. For a microsecond I thought about spreading the sessions a little further out to prolong it, but then thought, no - let's get this thing over with!!!3 points
-
Shame on the internet, embarrassment in the shop and tattoos that feel better than I deserve. Sounds like a good deal to me. Next session is the first time I know what I'm getting before I get there - have been lucky enough to snaffle a drawing he'd made and wanted to tattoo - and I'm finding that really rather odd. Distracts from the waiting though.3 points

agreed. i never came across this thread before and started from the beginning without even looking at the dates. in all honesty, i was thinking, "here we go again with another over-thinker" yadda yadda. then i got rewarded with the completed work with admission of shame, which is a strong move!! i would have to say, if most of us were honest with ourselves, we might realize that we were all the over-thinking, overexcited, fresh to tattoos/tattooing, "virgin canvasses" at one point. we get savvy to how things are over time and experience and get to look back at how much we've grown! we can look back at our first tattoos and remember the story of what an idiot i was or how young and i dumb i was! @HettyKet i'm not saying that you're any of these, but this thread is a good reminder anyways. one thing i love about conventions is the gathered energy and excitement... especially the feeling of those who are seeing and receiving great tattoos for the first time.3 points
-
That is gorgeous! Really really like. It was interesting to read your story. I did some over-thinking too until my tattoo artist kinda smacked me down. I'm much calmer now :-) Just lovely! Thank you for circling back around to "complete" your thread with the final result.3 points

Tattoos and the workplace
Rob I and 2 others reacted to OutOfIdeas for a topic
And here I was, thinking I was going to come and post an opinion opposing the norm... I totally agree with the last few posters. If you want tattoos that you can't hide, or even tattoos at all, you should be prepared for the consequences. Such as not being able to get certain jobs. Do I agree with certain businesses not hiring tattooed people? Fuck yea. If you could potentially lose business because a customer doesn't want to see a tattooed person working there, you'd be ignorant to hire the warped tour bodysuit kid. Simple business. If you want visible tattoos, you have to have a skill set that compensates. Plain and simple. Also, I think them even using the word "discriminate" in that article is unfair. Discrimination is based (in my mind) on factors out of your control, like race, gender, sexuality, etc. Not something you willingly chose to do to yourself. Just my $.02, as a tattooed youngster working on being heavily covered one day.3 points -

Finished what was planned for my left arm at the end of August although one little filler from that session (inner end of ditch) needs reworking after a shocking heal.3 points

Love it! I've got peonies on one of my arms behind some spiritual cranes. Also a pair of peonies on each knee...get it? Pee-knees...yes hilarious What I love about peonies is that you can contrast the colours between the inside and outside of the leaves. And make that contrast as subtle or wild as you'd like. Purple/Blue, orange/bubblegum-pink, white/mint-green, orange, red, blue, neon-pink, make em nice and fluffy haha2 points

@BrianH Everyone is a little different on pain threshold. Have a female friend who got a phoenix rib piece. Sat through the whole outline and color session in one shot without even wincing. I had no concept of how terrifying the back was and its gotten better over the several sessions of work but them ribs are SPICY! Inner thigh is no picnic either and healing has been very tender. But you'll always be happy with the results!2 points

Tattoo Addiction and my new plan
tattooedj and one other reacted to smiling.politely for a topic
I've never liked the idea of being tattooed getting called an "addiction." Too much negativity for that word to associate to something so primal, beautiful, and positive as tattooing. Why would you liken something you love so much to the reason that guy down the street has an insatiable need for sweet, sweet heroin?2 points -
And then there's learning to let go of the worry that you look stupid or that you don't know enough. I've been reassured a few times that tattooers are used to handling nervous newbies -- and everyone I've met so far has been nicer than I'd ever imagined as a pinky. This seems to be a profession that attracts people with an aversion to pretension, so it's better to have some humility than to try to impress. @HettyKet, it all worked out in the best way possible. I'm jealous of that arm.2 points

My favorite shop in the region is Empire Tattoo in Asheville, I have a lot of work from the guys there. Can't say enough good things about them, just a stellar group of guys. Hot stuff is another favorite, can't go wrong with any of the people there. Danny Reed did both of my feet and the man is a wizard. Charlotte has some really good shops and artists too - Rodney Raines at Ace Custom, anyone at 510 Expert tattoo. Highly recommend checking them out too.2 points -

Welcome to LST! I've been going up to that area to get work from Kore Flatmo for the past few years. I would love to get something from Mike Dorsey one day. Also, Mason Williams does awesome work too, but Mike fits what you're describing better. If I lived in walking distance to that studio, I probably wouldn't go any place else. I ran into someone at Sidewinders Coffee shop wearing a Mike Dorsey shirt while I was up there. Not something I see everyday walking around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. Next time you have some time, you should watch Kore Flatmo's interview on here. It's pretty great. If I may weigh in here: I don't really grasp the ramifications placed upon me by getting tattooed. I'm not sure I necessarily care. I don't want to change my life and experiences for a job that will forget me a week after I retire. It's tough for me to keep thinking that tattoos represent my individuality when looking at my interests it all becomes a "uniform" after a while. Like going to a cannibal corpse show and everyone is tattooed, smoking, drinking whiskey, wearing black, etc etc. they aren't exactly being unique even in cultural recesses. I was exposed to heavy tattoos at a very young age and loved them before I knew what taboo meant. I feel like I am at that stage in my life where I'm just doing things I really like trying to determine if I can still be an individual. Oddly enough I also feel that many people get tattoos today to fit in not to be outsiders.1 point

Full Back Piece Thread

Not sure this qualifies as a "full" back piece, but here it is anyway. This is after my 3rd session with Chad Koeplinger and I'm pretty thrilled with it. I don't particularly enjoy sitting with Chad for super long sessions, or at least I don't think i'm capable to sit for very long sessions with him. With that factored in, he thinks we have about 3 more to go. Happy to break it up in small sessions, as that is more opportunities to spend time with Chad. I love that guy. some insanely stunning pieces on this thread. Rob1 point -
