I kept on with the legs today, getting a scorpion and a pineapple from Franz Stefanik at The Okey Doke in Toronto. Its a great shop in the west end that is moving shortly (July 1 I think) to a much larger studio closer to the core. Really looking forward to seeing what they do with the space.14 points

@keepcalm you should stop by the shop even if you don't get tattooed, it would be rad to meet you! Also FTW is just a really fun and rad shop to check out, flash from floor to ceiling. And last week I called Tattoo City and put my name on Kahlil's list to start my back. Wee!10 points -

My accidental half sleeve by Rodrigo Souto, Black Garden, London, UK :D Photo nicked from his instagram (Instagram), the blue peony is healed, the pink are fresh.5 points -
I talked once with Yoni about doing the rest of my right arm, so from just above the elbow down, and I still want to do that, but I'm not really going to have enough available money to do that until I have my back done, so that's probably a year or two off. Besides, I'd prefer not to travel to do my back--travelling to do a sleeve was enough for me--especially when there are guys like Dave working locally.4 points

I was wondering if that was still on schedule to start soon. Are you still getting that girl riding a hotdog design with the mustard clouds and ketchup finger waves?4 points

Thank you. Late-night typing isn't my strong point. but yeah, Part Two is finished. The next DVD will be done when Part Three is finished (so don't hold your breath it could be 1-4 months) The original streaming service I used turned out to be pretty amateur-ish so I moved to Vimeo - you need to sign up but it's a much easier process once you do - you can download to own and I've set the rental period to 1 month. Thanks again for the interest. I think this one is a little more entertaining and positive than Part One - please spread the word...4 points -
Our bad tattoos

Oh I've got a few, some laughable some not, but I'm definitely not ashamed of this one First tattoo I ever did, at Tux's studio in '99. I was so nervous telling him & his wife the night before; I asked them to meet me for coffee and got it off my chest that I was ready to do this. He tried to talk me out of it by mentioning no heath benefits, no retirement pay, high-risk occupation, "why don't you be a vet or something, much easier. That's what Alex Herman did after quitting the biz". I could not be swayed. So he said"OK, show up at the shop tmrw and you can tattoo yourself". That really surprised me, I was not expecting that. I was prepared for "what the fuck, you shouldn't be doing this get the hell outta my sight". He had a legit rep for being rather brash and didn't pull punches. Chased a few people out of the shop looking for apprenticeships. When I got there I realized I had no idea what to put on myself. That part had not even crossed my mind, just "Holy shit Tux is gonna let me tattoo myself". So I said, "what should I pick?" He handed me this one and said "That's the first one I did on myself" which may or may not be true (once upon a long time ago he did the borneo scorpion on Higgs and told him he drew it himself hahaha what a classic fibber) but I didn't ask twice. He set up 2 Percy Waters, loud as hell, told me they were worth more than my life, showed me some basic info and turned me loose. That was one of the most exciting moments ever up to that point in my tattoo experiences. Best design ever? no. Best job ever? No. Some good blowouts? Yup. Something I'm proud of? Most definitely.4 points -

Just to clarify... :-) I got the tattoo started in March, unfortunately, as I live abroad, I can only get home to see my family about twice a year, and as it stood at the time of my previous post on Last Sparrow, my dad had not yet seen it. As it is my first tattoo and I chose to go big and bold with it I was just a bit worried as to how he would take it. I did put a photo of the design on my FB and he had a rather emotional reaction to it, asking me not to do it. I did tell him I respected his opinion, but I had to do what felt right to me. Hence my worry. I am now at my home country and I am pleased to say that he loved it. He thought it was very me - another testament to me making the right choice with the design and a great complement to my tattoo artist :-) Since he is a graphic designer by trade he does tend to appreciate beauty in things, so I shouldn't have worried that much... Guess I was too excited about going home and had to share my fears with you lovely lot... xccx3 points

@jimmyirish I took some quick, really bad, laptop cam pics for you. There was pretty much no coordination between the arms. I like the negative spacing and how each image can stand on its own on my american arm. I also like the coverage and how heavy the japanese arm is. I couldn't decide so I just said I'd get one of each lol. Understand that your arms will always be a little asymmetric, just a little. The only way, imo, that you might make them more similar would be to get stars & dots filler when you finish the american trad arm. I probably won't go that route just because I like the negative spacing on it. But to each their own. In the end, overall symmetry wasn't that important to me. I just like tattoos, and wanted both styles. Sorry for the horrible pic quality, but it's enough to get the idea I think :cool:3 points -

We're all a little neurotic, welcome to the club...& LST. Rocked in this morning to have a look at this heavy, slam back of the neck panthers head tattoo, but gonna wait a couple of weeks until on leave as it's gonna be faaarkin brutal! After a bit of a chat, a couple of cold ones, we had one of them spontaneous moments and slammed an old time bird behind the ear & threw my kids names in. Nice & simple :) The only words I have tattooed on my skin. Good time tattoo Sunday.2 points -

Holy Moly! I finally did it. I converted the PAL DVD to NTSC so that North American, Canadian, Japanese and the rest of South American tat fans can watch the DVD in the comfort of not-in-front-of-a-computer - such a thing does exist. You can buy it from store.copperheadeditions.com Also a friendly reminder that you can stream a HD version at the Copperhead Editions site too - this version is just the documentary without bonus features but it's in HD so you can see all my shaky camera work! Thanks to everyone for the support and patience with this project.2 points -
@scatterbrain92 There is a ton of material out there to get ideas from. You can start with wood block prints and your mind should be sufficiently blown; Hokusai, Yoshitoshi, Toshidama. If these do not appeal to your taste, then traditional Japanese is not really a style you are interested in. Plenty of lotuses, but not so much fairies on heartagrams.1 point

Yep, that was the one. Can't stand anyone, maybe especially other women, use such derogatory and sexist terms to describe women. Thank crap there were a few sensible folk and some who could reflect on it from a wider perspective. Someone even mentioned body policing :) I saw that there's a feminism and tattoos thread here so will go and have a read as I have a few conflicting thoughts that might have already been tackled there. You are in the best company! :D1 point

I think people are really overstating the timelessness of traditional tattoos. I first started seeing them in the mid to late 90s when hardcore kids started getting them. I would guess this was to a large extent the influence of Higgs trickling down, though I did know a dude who got a bunch of bad old metal tattoos covered up with some really beautiful classic traditional done by The Dutchman in probably around 98 or so, and that was coming from a different place. Regardless, traditional tattoos have a time and a place, there isn't this continuity with them that a lot of people imagine there is, and my suspicion is that it's probably not going to be too long before traditional is going to be looked at with the same kind of sneering derision that a lot of people usually save for tribal or chromed out dragon sleeves. I'm not saying that a well-done traditional tattoo isn't going to age super well and that a big fuck off eagle on the chest or roses or a panther or whatever isn't always going to look badass, because it will, and I'm going to continue getting tattoos like that because they're powerful and they get me stoked, but don't fool yourself into thinking that they'll always be the "cool" tattoos. There are a lot of twenty year olds out there who are keepin' it super old school by getting face tattoos who are putting on shitty "traditional" tattoos that look like total ass. There's stupid things circulating of old timey celebrities with traditional tattoos photoshopped on them, I mean, there was a recent thread here about a gallery show of fucking porcelain dolls with traditional tattoos painted on them. Shit is becoming an unfunny joke.1 point
