  1. Well this has been a great experience! When I contacted SOG in March, I emailed some ideas/elements I wanted to incorporate along with a photo of my black cat and my leg. I referenced a couple of elements from his book like the cat's expression on one page, the skinny snake from another page, and peonies. When I got there today I finally saw his drawing and it was just perfect immediately! Love at first sight. He used machines only which was fine by me. I love the way the cat and snake seem to be eyeing each other suspiciously with narrowed eyes... And here I am on the hotel bed with my feet kicked up watching ET. Stella is beside me wearing her new monmon cat (t-shirt) nightgown. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  3. i was stuck on who i wanted to do my back for the longest time, but it all came together last year... seeing @ironchef's collabo put the light bulb above my head, then seeing instagram pics of jondix and chad traveling together in Nepal illuminated it. they're both the best dudes and i thought their friendship, mindset, and contrasting styles would make for an interesting collaboration. i knew they both frequently attended the SOG/SFO convention in Oct., so i sent 'em an email with the thought as soon as it hit me in April. lucky for me, they were both super into it! we bounced a few emails back and forth and they ended up drawing on a Philippine eagle on top of frontal skull in Chad's hotel room at 12:30am, after the first night of the convention. most of you can probably guess who did what. (photo taken by @ian) it was great to experience the magic happening right behind me... although i couldn't see what was going on, i could feel it and hear it. i've had individual artists draw on tattoos and an usually artist thinks and does what they do pretty quietly... but when both of them are drawing and thinking together, they have to verbalize those thoughts to each other. i had the pleasure of listening in on these two tattoo geniuses' thoughts as they shared. speaking of tattoo geniuses, another piece of magic happened... just as they were finishing up the drawing, Mike Wilson and a few other folks visited the room. Chad happened to be a little stuck on how to position a wing, so Mike chimed in with a perfect suggestion, getting in on the collabo! after that, i basically had to sit tight for 35-45 minutes while they attacked me and lined whole the damned thing. there was some artistic and technical discussion during the tattoo, but there was one last piece of collaboration to be done... i had originally requested to incorporate one of the symbols from Jondix's 108 Marks book. this was to be the last thing they were going to tattoo, but instead of going with the symbol i requested, they decided to collaborate and create a whole new symbol. they took turns drawing a piece of it and passing the sharpie back and forth to each other. when they were happy with it, Chad made it permanent. i've since had one more session with Chad out in Napa. Jondix won't be making it to the SFO this year, so he's trying to convince me to get out to Barcelona or London, but funds, the wife, and work schedule are iffy. i can't wait to see it come together, but i'm patient enough to wait for things to align. i'm waiting for the artists to share pics before i do.

  6. I got really lucky with Henning and Rubendall. Normally Mike isn't into collaborations, especially if its not with another artist that works in the same shop. Even though Rubes and Henning are great friends and business partners, Mike was still hesitant. But the timing and things worked out and luckily both agreed. Henning honestly had no issues with it. He LOVES tattoos and tattooing so he was super stoked into the idea. I think if anyone is planning on approaching artists about a collaboration, make sure the artist know each other well and as the client you would need to figure out the timing and try to get them to agree on the collaboration. My back piece is the only true collaboration between Henning and Rubendall. Henning did share that a few years ago he had a client who was in trouble with the law and basically was on his way to prison for a long duration. The client wanted to finish his tattoo before being hauled away and Mike just happened to be in town. The client's piece need another 16-20 hours of work but Henning and Mike tagged teamed and did side by side coloring and shading and finished everything in a one day 9-10 hour session. Next day the guy went off to jail. @HaydenRose I personally think Grez would be okay with collaborating with Rose Hardy. She's new to the shop and as a business approach, it would be smart for Grez to generate clients for Rose which could result in repeat business for the shop overall.

  9. Haven't started a new thread in awhile, so here we go... As I mentioned awhile back, I have appointments lined up with Grez to finish out my right arm (so far I have my shoulder and inner bicep complete). I have a list of images/themes I want to include and tackle it as a mish-mash of smaller designs. Actually @TrixieFaux 's sleeve by Kim Saigh has been a big inspiration. I love Grez's bold style and definitely want him to complete the images and give him as much creative license as possible. However, I was considering making it a collaboration with Rose Hardy. Lately, I've been digging her lace-like filler pieces and geometric designs. Anyway... enough of my incoherent rambling (I truly hope everyone understands what I'm getting at)... so my question(s) are: Do you think this is possible? (Obviously I'm going to run everything by Grez at our consult, just want to nail down some ideas first) and what is the etiquette with collaboration pieces? Has anyone gotten filler tattooed by a different artist? Also, I'm hoping this thread can be a cool discussion on collaboration projects. I think we all agree @ironchef takes the cake with his Henning/Rubendall back piece. Anyone else have large scale tattoos from two (or more?!) artists? What was the process like? Thanks everyone!

  10. Machine. At one point @DJDeepFried stopped by to visit and asked Horitomo, "So just machine today, no Tebori?" Horitomo looked at me and said, "You want Tebori?" with a little grin... I was like, "Nah, I'm good!" I would have gone either way, he chose machine and I am more than happy with that.

  14. This is exactly (I think) what Myles meant when referring to how this shit changes you, and you just become a person that's different to how you were when once young. I have memories being as young as 9 (in the late '70's) when the Heroin epidemic was rife in this country, & watching a current affair programs with my mum about the numbers of young people falling victim to smack. It scared the fuck outta me and remember crying like a fuckin baby & saying to me mum how I never wanted to be like them...with me mum telling me that people only end up becoming what they choose to become. She was fuckin' right, I did make that choice. I also see now after all these years how hardened it even made my poor mum & dad. They're still alive & live next door to us, and for the 1st time ever, we talk openly about the very beginnings at age 15...the bars & strip clubs, the drugs & alcohol, the violence, the disappearing for weeks on end to like surface for a day or 2, then the cycle starting all over again...and that emptiness that clouds over you at times, ha! a lot of the time is the exact same look that comes from the old girls face, as she had to deal with the same pain from a mothers perspective. We never, ever talked about this shit until sort of recently when out of the blue she asked me just one question. "What did I do wrong which made us loose you all them years ago"? For the last 31 years, she finally plucked the courage to ask that 1 question. That's when it hits home to you how much damage this shit really causes. My old man on the other hand, like the day I turned 40, looks me in the eye, shakes me by the hand and just simply says "how ya fuckin made it this far mate has simply just got me fucked". A statement like that holds just as much power ya know, because that draws out that smile that's so desperately needing to surface...even for just that couple of seconds. Within the last 72 hours, I've had an old mate who came a "pick" away from ending it all because of that internal struggle. Thank fuck he's in a safe place receiving treatment. He said to me today...when ya hit rock bottom brother and end up in a place like this, you realise who your real friends are...faaark all. This interaction here talking about this shit has been a very positive outlet. Thank you. @MadeIndelible...keep that network happening mate, and @jimmyirish said, work it!

  18. I was talking to my lawyer not too long ago and the subject of someone I may know came up (one of his high-profile clients...) that was huge into the drug scene as a international smuggler. Sure I knew the guy in school.. turns out the guy is dead. I thought a bit and realized that anyone I knew that was associated with hard drugs is now dead. I'm glad I knew when to call it quits.

  19. I don't think the two are necessarily in contradiction. Read this article by JoJo Ackermann, especially the part where he talks about how he can do the same design on ten different people and have ten different tattoos at the end of it. Take a look at the sheet of roses that Adrian Sanchez posted on his blog here and notice how different they all are despite them all coming from the same line drawing. And this is even before we get into placement, how these tattoos go with your other tattoos, and so on and so forth. Basically, even if you pick a tried and true classic off the wall, you're still getting a unique tattoo.

  20. @TrixieFaux yes!!! It's sooo good. I was on the fence, now I want one. Maybe he would do a monmon dog? Haha I love the placement and how big it is. Very nice.

  23. Hi all Thought I'd give you a little update on the phoenix tattoo that is slowly (but surely!) taking shape on my back. It is very much a personal celebration of triumph over adversity (when you lose everything that is familiar to you, you almost experience a rebirth of sorts, I find). We have all gone through tough times and these experiences usually give us a chance to learn lessons about ourselves and our reactions, re-awakening our ability to grow. The phoenix to me is a symbol of strength, resurrection and survival, and now a permanent reminder that I am stronger than I think :-) It is my first tattoo so please be gentle :-p Tattooed by Danny Rossiter of the Rain City Tattoo Collective (Rain City Tattoo Collective | Rain City Tattoo Collective, Manchester) xccx

  25. @Pugilist has a story about how when she was getting her back worked on I asked Stephanie about tebori, because she's getting her back done by Shinji, and Steph then proceeded with an impromptu tebori demonstration with a machine on Pugilist's kidneys. I still haven't been forgiven for that one.

    Tattoo Collaboration

I think a collaboration works best when the finished piece looks cohesive but you can also figure out which part was done by each artist. The Hooper/O'Donnell skull and snake back piece is a great example. The skull obviously belongs to Hooper and the the snake is clearly an O'Donnell snake.

    Tattoo Collaboration

My back piece is eventually gonna be a collaboration of four tattooers. Grime is doing the main image on my back, I'll have the back of my thighs done by two different tattooers (not sure who yet, but I have a shortlist) and Marius Meyer will eventually wrap it up with background. Grime didn't seem to mind one bit. If I were you I think I'd just mention that you're playing around with the idea of a her filling out the open space between his tattoos. You can probably tell from his reaction if he's into it or not. And yeah, @ironchef really takes the cake as far as collabs go!

    Tattoo Collaboration

Haha nice thread! I guess it's on the artist. When I approached Tim to do a collaboration with Garver he wasn't too excited about the idea but I think that's mostly because he's on the west coast. He told me either get my back done by him or Chris. Since they work in the same shop and know each other I wouldn't see any problem with that! Oh btw I actually kinda have a collaboration with Tim and Chris now. Chris is currently finishing my cobra background. I'm sure you seen it on instagram.

  42. I gotta say Mick, reading that last post got me a little choked. Especially the stuff about your dad, i had the exact same conversation but in reverse i supposed. I remember sitting in a coffee shop with my dad, looking at him a year sober and saying to him 'how the fuck are you still alive you old bastard!' and we both stood up and hugged. It was almost as if in that moment all the anger and resentment about his behavior over the years fell away, and i was just happy to have him there, this old red faced bastard - my dad. heavy stuff for the internet! Still its good to talk, and even better to listen. Thanks for that @Mick Weder

  43. No apologies necessary, Euchild! I probably shouldn't have quoted your original question, which was a fair and thoughtful one. I was really reacting (and maybe overreacting!) to some of the responses to your post. I reread the responses, and realize I may have read too much into them, thinking that perhaps people were thinking that there was something creepy about my hubby for asking me to get tattooed, and maybe something creepy about me for agreeing. So I got up on my soapbox! But it has been a topic of interest to me for a while. My response grew out of a thread on another site where a lady wrote that her husband wanted her to get a tattoo, and she had strongly declined. He would not take no for an answer, and kept browbeating her, saying that if she loved him she would do it. She sounded desperate, saying, that she didn't know what to do. She really, really didn't want a tattoo, but she loved him, and was afraid he would leave her, and wondered if if she should do it just to please him. It sounded so sad, and I thought, how horrible that a person would try to intimidate their spouse like that, and how sad that she was considering doing something that she didn't want to do just to please him. Yet I realized that my husband had asked me to get a tattoo, and I was reluctant, yet I did it to please him! Was he abusing me? Was I a spineless enabler stripping myself of all dignity by agreeing? It made me think hard about the differences between her situation and mine. The big difference for us was that in the end I made the decision for me, as well for him.

@hogg & Mark Bee. The term "bikie" is another media term only. Many years ago, a person would come close to having his mouth shut for even using such a derogatory term. These days with everyone becoming an expert as to what's written in the papers and what they see on the news, pfft, it just becomes another little piece of history that gets lost and some of us become a little too tired in trying to keep it alive. Another term "gang" is also a media typo. They're "clubs". Again, if that needs to be elaborated on, then it just ain't worth the time. Those of us who had/ have origins from the Oi days know how retarded the media terms to "skinhead or punk gangs" appear. Same shit. Back to the tattoo topic. This is what we get when we offer mainstream a glimpse into our culture. We create opposing cultures with two completely different takes on the subject, and that has been the sad part for me. It's like the day when I was getting tattooed in High St, Fremantle Western Australia back in 93, directly opposite the Workers Club, oh, in an old time "biker" run art studio...sorry, tattoo fuckin shop...these were the days Tattooers started charging like $100 an hour!! After we had completed our 4 pack of Rum and the 3 hour tattoo, I laid out $300 on the chair to complete our deal. Old mate looks me in the eye, handed me back half my cash and said...mate, the day I start charging top dollar for tattoos is the day I may as well be just tattooing Drs and fuckin lawyers. Fuck taking it away from the working man where it belongs. And that was my very 1st encounter in that particular shop.

I'm still working out the idea, for a while I was thinking about a crane (or heron) with a pine tree as part of the background, but have rethought that for a number of reasons. One being that I already have birds in my preexisting work, and I am not sure that I want to be covered in different kinds of birds. A couple of years ago I was all about having a deer and peach tree and was ready to start working on it, decided to hold off and do other work, and now I'm all "naw, I don't want no birds or deer, I want a dragon!" I am undecided as to whether or not I want to go with water/wind bars because I like the negative space that is created - although the whole protective element from being totally covered is super appealing, and water and wind bars are gorgeous - we'll see. Would be Japanese/Tibetan - I love the flow of lines and movement. I'm not ready to start working on my back, will continue to plot and fantasize in the meantime (and work on getting more tattoos.)
