  3. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. There's an old David Mamet essay -- he's writing about writing but it applies -- about how some of the "mod" architects of the '60s & '70s built houses with flat roofs that looked amazing when they were first built but collapsed with the first heavy snowfall. Versus how chairs were built in the 18th & 19th centuries with mortise and tenon joints that only made the chair stronger as the wood expanded over time. Some styles just work and while the art of tattooing (or any other art) can't move forward without innovation, there's no point in trying to reinvent the wheel when there are perfectly good wheels available all around you. In a word, it's all about structure. Sorry if that sounded wicked pretentious.

I love a good pair of raw denim when they're stiff and new, but I like 'em even more once they're broken in and faded. There is beauty in change. Nothing gold can stay. Stay gold, Ponyboy.

  7. I'm curious how Amanda Wachob's tattoos will age. I don't say that to be snarky, I'm genuinely curious. I think that because a lot of her tattoos are abstract that they might not do too badly in the long run, relatively speaking, because they don't require the structure that, for example, a watercolour style hummingbird like the one posted earlier in this thread would need to keep it readable over time as a hummingbird. I have to wonder about the craftsmanship here. I feel that I often hear people talking about how this is a "new" style and how nobody knows how it will age, and I think that's total garbage. The Music & Sea Tattoos issue of Tattootime has an article by Doc Webb from 1982 where he says "[many] have gone to extremely thin line, no shading. This had happened before. The many who stayed in business long found when the colors faded, as they seem to do, if you only had a faint outline and no shading, you had no tattoo." It's been tried time and time again with the same result every time. Either people are doing these tattoos without an understanding of the history of tattooing, which is a problem, or they're giving people tattoos they know won't hold up essentially because there's a demand for it, and that sits really uneasily with me. Are people who want these tattoos being informed about this? I hope so, but if you google "watercolor tattoo" after a couple of pinterest/tumblr links there's a website from a guy who seems to do these tattoos saying that they'll age just fine. I guess when it comes down to it, I fundamentally agree with you that it's people's skin and money and if that's what they want and what makes them happy, then they should go for it, but for me, I think for the most part this kind of thing isn't what I would consider good tattooing. Different strokes, etc.

Have been enjoying this thread and while I have no new tattoos to show off, I do have a new cat :) Eva is a little over a year old and has been with me for a few months now. She owned the place within a couple of weeks, of course. I got her from a friend who could no longer keep her. I had lived with cats before but never had one that was my own. I had been thinking semi-seriously for a while about getting one and decided to save this little girl from an uncertain future. Aside from being cute as hell, she came with skills too. She is the queen of the tinfoil ball and actually fetches ! Not unheard of, I know but, it's cool ! Makes my job so much easier ha ha ......

Tattoos are just like us. If we are lucky enough to grow old, our tattoos will grow old with us. Old, faded, greenish-black tattoos look pretty cool to me, as long as the original composition and placement were solid.

In all seriousness my non-snarky reply if you were in front of me at the shop my first real idea would be an organized overlapping 'pile' of numerals using varying sizes, textures and tones. My quick 90 second consultation doodle would look like this; Don't judge. That was less than 2 minutes.

It will. Your replies make it seem like you're hoping someone has a trick, or secret ink that will stay black and last forever. It won't. No amount of asking, re-phrasing, and re-asking will change that. It just won't happen. Ever. Give up on tattoos now. What you're after doesn't exist, no matter how bad you want it to. I wish I could eat everything I want, never exercise, and not get fat. That won't happen. Asking strangers on the internet how to make that happen, and then not accepting "it won't work" as a correct answer, doesn't make it any more possible.

@junior, I'm not sure how many replies it's going to take for you to get it, but tattoos aren't going to last forever and they're not going to look perfect forever. You have to accept that going in. If you don't, as multiple people have said, a tattoo is not for you. Use your "life savings" or $500 that you mentioned in the other thread and spend it on something else.

What about a computer with binary on the screen? I'm sure there are lots of ways to make it into a more appealing tattoo. If you really dig a plain binary tattoo, then by all means get it. No need to appease us. But if you're asking because you're rethinking, then definitely try to make the tattoo more visually striking. Do you have an artist in mind? They may be able to offer more informed insight.

  28. So we got finished on my leg at about 5 PM yesterday and my guy wrapped it in plastic and had me leave it wrapped until I went to take a shower before work in the morning, about 17 hours. It has not oozed or seeped anything all day. He said to start putting lotion on it in about 5 days or so after it had crusted over. I think I like this routine. I think I had always over gooped in the healing process.

  34. I remember when I was first getting into tattooing (like I've been getting tattooed for that long, insert eye-roll, I'm a tattoo newbie still), and loving Amanda's birds and such but then the more I simply thought about it, how tattoos and the skin ages, etc I came to my own conclusion that they would not age well. Then, I learned about what makes a good tattoo and it solidified this conclusion. If I were the kind of person that wanted to get tattooed with this style, knowing full well that the tattoo would fade and not age well - well, then I guess I'm cool with doing that for the experience, the temporariness of the tattoo, etc. Though, if I'm going to get a tattoo, I damn well want to get one that is going to look as good as possible for as long as possible. I agree that it is unethical to not have your clients know that you are not tattooing in a traditional way, and the effects of aging are going to be different than that of a traditional tattoo. Also, I've seen a lot of tattoos like this on the street (ie without the strong outlining of more traditional work), that are obviously at not fresh, and they look sad to me - like something is missing.

  35. I think you can do soft, painterly application of color inside solid lines that looks good because I've seen tattoos like this - I don't mean tebori necessarily, but taking the texture of watercolor while adding some structural black and keeping the color within these defined areas. (The tattoo that Rus did on my arm has a light pink pigment overlaid with some darker red to imitate the watercolor illustration it came from, which in turn conveys the texture of the flower petals.) It may not last as long as solid, densely-packed color, but when it fades you'll still have the structure of a real tattoo. I like texture.

  37. Isn't part of the problem with "watercolour tattoos", beyond the fact that they often look like crap to begin with and are only going to look worse from there, that the people who seem to want them seem to not only not really care about tattoos but they don't really care about watercolour either? Watercolour is such a beautiful medium and I love the way that you can get these beautiful translucencies and how the paint works in this kind of indeterminate manner when you're painting on wet paper. It would be super cool if people who wanted "watercolour tattoos" wanted them because they loved Turner's watercolours, or Sargent's paintings, or something like that (not that these would translate into tattoos!) but instead it's almost always really rough sketches with splotches of colour. @Tesseracts that Batman you posted makes me think somewhat of the tattoos done by guys like Adrian Lee, Phil Holt, and Steve Moore.

How about not getting a tattoo? They aren't perfect images that last forever in your skin, if you can't accept that, don't get one. Your mind numbing drivel is diluting the purpose of this forum.

  42. I've got a one to one session with a level two SFG tomorrow (that's Pavel Tsatsouline's organisation). To be honest I need a coach to tell me if I've gone wrong, so this is overdue. Doing a Kettlebell program at the moment that's 10x10 swings and 10 Turkish get ups a day (doing near daily sessions). I'm using a 24kg and 16-20kgs for the TGUs. My goal is to use a 32kg bell for all of it, hitting particular time targets. The swings will be do able but the TGUs will be a lot harder! Something a bit different. I'm giving it till the end of summer.

Yes thats mine indeed! Veery happy with it! And it matches my Bingham panther on my other leg too :) will post a better picture when Im back home. He took his time, it's a very small tattoo and it took him aprox 4 hours! He is very meticulous about his cats! Hehe He does do tebori, but he used machines on me, im happy he did. Can imagine it would take even longer with the tebori technique!
