  1. Valerie finished my backpiece yesterday. Had some serious post-tattoo nausea after this one. Glad it's finally done, but will miss the process.

  3. I find this sweeping generalisation of women offensive. The ladies on this forum are incredibly passionate and well learned about their tattoos. If you want to alienate these fantastic women, then please continue making ignorant remarks like this.

Hi 47 year male from central Texas here. Finally getting half a sleeve koi fish in traditional Japanese style this Thursday. I'm very excited, but nervous. I did a lot of research on what artist I wanted to use and decided on Katja Ramirez, who works out of Rock Of Ages in Austin, TX. Really like the work I have seen from her. Just hope I don't embarrass myself and can take the pain. I do have a small tattoo, that is going to be covered up. Been reading a lot of posts and it has been very helpful. Just a short introduction and thanks for the helpful posts.

  12. I'm in Australia so rolled up sleeves are a must in summer! I don't have any issues at the moment (working in the arts / education) and I am hoping to stay that way as it fits my personality a lot more than office work ever did!

  13. Hi, I'm no use on the Ottawa front either, but if your sister is into the classic old school or just black tattoos, Christian Lanouette is killing it these days. He'll be the guy I go to for my next tattoo in town. His work healed really solid on my girlfriend.

  15. Joel Conroy at Barnstormer in Ottawa does nice work, but I don't really know of any other shops in Ottawa aside from that. Eilo and both of the Nicks at MTL Tattoo do really nice tattoos, but I'm not crazy about the rest of the work coming out of that shop. I'd recommend Tattoomania. Everybody there puts on really good tattoos, between the different artists at the shop they can do pretty much any style, and it's just a really nice, friendly, warm shop. PSC Tattoo is a great shop...Dave Cummings books out really far in advance but I think it's possible to get tattooed by Will or Arno on fairly short notice and they're both great. Imago is another good shop. I've seen a few tattoos that Nat who works there has done and they're pretty amazing. Hope that helps a bit.

  17. So many awesome tattoos here lately, wish my tapatalk likes would show up! I got double teamed on my feet today, Jason Walstrom did the pig while Mimi Wunsch did the rooster. Pics stolen from their IG's. Wasnt as bad as I'd thought it might be beforehand, but definately stung more in a few places than most other spots so far, a bit worse than collarbone, nowhere near as bad the rib cliff. It's gonna be a fun few healing days coming up I'm sure!

  20. The first thing I look for is the quality of the work. I want good lines, good colors, and good shading. After that, I look to see if they're specializing in a style, or if they cover a wide variety. I compare what they have up to they style I'm looking to have done. If they don't have an example that fits the general style I'm looking for, I move on to another artist. For me, in this day and age, the MOST important factor is to have an online portfolio. I'm busy, and don't have the time to drive from shop to shop looking at physical portfolios, as much as I would enjoy it. When picking an artist, I browse the shop websites, looking for a portfolio that speaks to me. When I find one, I'll visit the shop to take it a step further, and then book an appointment from there. Artists without online portfolios get skipped. I may be missing out on a great tattooer or 4, but I'll never know....

  22. Yea on a few occasions I've had guys and girls touching my arm at the gym like straight up rubbing it and telling me how much the like it. I was so weirded out I had almost no response other than like a quick thanks as I pulled away. Girls who complain about unwanted attention, yup I now understand lol

  23. I teach inner city New York. You win... Lol I'm aiming to become an administrator asap I already have my second dual masters in school based and school District leadership. My kids will touch my arm and get confused trying to figure out how it's on there. It's too funny to me but it's also innocent. The only time a tattoo would become an issue is if it was offensive or on the face/throat/hands I think (the obvious spots that are frowned upon most ) I get looks until people get to know me usually and as far as I'm concerned we can't teach kids how to be individuals if we all look and act the same. Now the weirdos at the gym that try to touch my tattoos... Well I just wished the stared

  24. Josh Stephens told me there was a kid who got tattooed by him every other week, and on the in-between weeks, he was getting tattooed by Marina Inoue. So the guy was getting tattooed every week, and had been doing this for a pretty long time. I can't even imagine having to be constantly healing tattoos. But yeah, you'll be fine OP.

All those folk at Saved are great, but if you want a Thomas Hooper tattoo, it's well worth your while to save your money and fly to Texas to get it from him. Nobody tattoos like him.

  26. When I was getting tattooed by Scott, Jeff was telling a story about how he bet a guy twice the price of his tattoo on the dice cage they have at Black Heart. The client lost, and apparently he had been in there getting tattooed four times that week. Not sure if it was for one shots or large scale work. Scott said something to the effect that it was bad karma to win that much money from someone who was filling four appointments per week, but them's the rules of dice cage.

  28. Propagandhi - Showdown This is an inescapable track from my sophomore year in high school. http://youtu.be/gzgG3HyRwV4 And then a band called The Adjustments did a cover of "boys of summer" called "the boise summer" (before any other punk covers, dammit) that was ALWAYS in rotation...I tracked down the CD recently because I couldn't find a digital copy....and after writing that i went ahead and uploaded it to youtube, thankyouverymuch, so here it is. I should throw some Op Ivy in there to complete my high school set; it's sort of a given.

    Fitness!

Yes! I started boxing about a year ago. I started at my gym on the heavy/speed bag and eventually joined a muay thai boxing gym in September (I only do western boxing though because an elbow to the face is not appealing to me). Last night I finally started beginners sparring but didn't get to punch anyone or be punched in the face. Apparently they like you to work up to that hahaha. I really love it. It's pretty much the only time I get to focus on just one thing and basically meditate. It's also fun to do something physical to work towards something that's goal is not weight loss.

    Who is Dave Gibson?

I just came across this thread. I never got tattooed by Dave, but I was tattooed a number of times by Morgwn Pennypacker at Lucky's which was Dave's old shop in San Diego. It was such a great shop, with all of Dave's hand painted flash on the wall's. In my opinion, that place was exactly the way a tattoo shop should be.

  37. It's taken me a while to get round to posting but... here is the result of LST peer pressure ;) Instagram Done by Rodrigo Souto, Black Garden Tattoo, London, UK. I'm thinking about asking him for more flowers around it too. What do you think? Meanwhile... I got a little carried away... Instagram Dominique Holmes, The Family Business, London, UK. To be completed next month, plus I'm having a matching doodad on my foot. It's the same flower with a pattern that matches the ruff. I blame you lot for all of this.

  43. I'm a teacher. I imagine it varies school to school, admin to admin... I work in the inner city, L.A. Most of the parents in this community have several tattoos themselves. They don't mind. My principal doesn't know I have them though because I have chosen to wear long sleeves. My students see them because I pull up my sleeves from time to time inside the classroom. They do not mind at all ?. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  45. Ha, got my 1st tattoo 4 months ago at age 48. 2nd a month ago. 3rd scheduled in 2 months. I guess you might call it mid-life crisis. I think it's more a combination of things: - never realized the different styles and options of tattoos. Always only pictured traditional tattoos (which I don't like) - tattoo location. don't need to be publicly displayed unless I want to. - 48 yrs of life's experiences. My appearance is what it is. I not "trying" to be anything. I am who I am. I can't control everything. - tattoo has personal meaning to me and relates to specific times/places/experiences/memories.

    good client behavior

I know how awkward it is for some artists to ask a client to undress, so I avoid that awkwardness by undressing completely before all tattoos, regardless of placement. Common courtesy, really.
