  3. @irezumi rad, and offers a proper perspective to learning. Studying an art or craft escapes those that view it from a pedestrian viewpoint. Its easy to assign opinions based solely on the repeating of what we've heard before. Which to me is ironic to the replication of imagery or patterns. Folks who are playing guitar in metal bands that have perfected their form of shredding might even be unaware of Al di meola and his invention of style but may have learned some Eddie van halen. Even when we learn we cannot find the beginning if we are always trying to be the magic sky wizard (god) and the creators of every thing we think is new. To create better things I had to remove that aspect of ego. Only then could I learn and it started with trying to repeat and understand what worked and why. As always, quality contribution. Thanks for posting that. Sent from my SM-G900T using Tapatalk

I initially had the day off to go with my friend to Skull and Sword for her first tattoo ever. But then I realized watching people get tattooed is boring. Plus, she's getting her back done, and it might be weird if she caught me gawking at her side boob. Soooooo, I ended up booking an appointment with Nick Rodin at Blackheart. I have no idea what I want to get.

  5. My pleasure. If I have something interesting to share I'm glad to do so. With luck it piques the interest enough to make people here buy some books, find and buy old magazines, dig through old articles, go to art shows, go to a museum, etc. Basically to do the research and contribute back. The process of finding the information used to be much more difficult and/or time consuming but is still so much more rewarding. The internet is a super helpful tool but I find that I absorb the material if I see and hold a book, venture to the library to request old/rare books that are unaffordable or too rare to buy, or take the time to show up in front of a painting and stand in front if it for a few minutes without talking or even thinking, just looking and soaking it in, or bringing a sketchbook to a museum and study/draw from a sculpture or a skull or even a dead stuffed animal (Thanks Teddy Roosevelt). 'in real life' information. Granted, I approach all of this as an artist and/or as a tattooer so perhaps my level of interest might be different than a civilian, but the desire to learn more about a passion is shared by all not just this side of the counter.

  6. So many awesome tattoos here lately, wish my tapatalk likes would show up! I got double teamed on my feet today, Jason Walstrom did the pig while Mimi Wunsch did the rooster. Pics stolen from their IG's. Wasnt as bad as I'd thought it might be beforehand, but definately stung more in a few places than most other spots so far, a bit worse than collarbone, nowhere near as bad the rib cliff. It's gonna be a fun few healing days coming up I'm sure!

  7. Greetings my inked brothers & sisters, esteemed Artist Masters, Collectors of fine body art, Kitchen Wizards extraordinaire ...lowly fellow newbies. I am here for ANSWERS! The questions are irrelevant. I wish to snatch the pebble from the master before he can close his hand. To hear the grasshopper at my feet. I seek the path to enlightenment, a rad Japanese sleeve, the joy of a good, full bodied cigar for under $4. And most importantly to be the first kid on my block with a Frank Frazetta like viking with a Jackson Pollock inspired ink job done by Paul Acker. Since you asked, I would say I am a cross between (pre-cocaine) John Belushi, Chuck Norris's emotionally suspect cousin, and remember that guy on the TV show Night Court? The one that does magic tricks and dresses like he's from the 40's? Yeah, not that guy. I want to take this opportunity to put the rumor to rest that I was born in a manger in Bethlehem. Actually, I was born in the Bronx. Many, many, many people would agree that my greatest strength is my humility. I would confess that my greatest weakness other than kryptonite; is that sometimes I can be a little bit too...awesome. In conclusion, I am here to learn and share in the fellowship of exquisite, exciting and daring ink. I hope that you allow me to tap into that wellspring of precious insight that can only be acquired by learned experience and angry, self-righteous maturity. While we're here I hope we can share some laughs along the way and If were not careful we just might learn something. Let the panic commence, MAGIC HATE BALL

My guys sent me some texts last night saying his grandmother has to go in for surgery the day of our appointment. He was really apologetic about it. I told him not to worry and to go take care of his grandma. We can make another appointment when that situation has stabilized. I mean, damn dude, go take care of her. I guess some people can be real dicks because he seemed genuinely surprised at my response. Family first, all the way. It might have been a bit different if I had a cross country trip planned for the appointment but I would hope my reaction would still be the same.

  11. The way I phrased it to a business associate recently. Don't "pick" on tattoos because they are so easy. It is like picking on smokers, we stand out and "are bad". Think about it like this. I group tattoos with religion, politics, pro-choice, etc. They are non-value adds to work, so just skip them. What can be gained at work by showing up with all your tattoos showing or similarly wearing your "Obama 2012" shirt, or similarly your choice of faith pendant prominently displayed. Nothing. Yes, you may find like minded individuals, but realistically it causes fractures in the workplace. I've seen the topics I've mentioned tear up relationships in the office and paint various persons with a "bad" image. People at work should keep their opinions to themselves and not bring in their views unless related to work. Example: I overheard a crazy conversation based in religious beliefs that mentioned that gay people aren't real people. Seriously this happened in corporate America right out in the open. I also happened to know a person, who I know is gay happened to be sitting very very much in earshot of this whole discussion. Let's just say it didn't end well for the parties involved. Example 2: I was in a social conversation at work with coworkers and some directors that somehow creeped into politics. I removed myself quickly from the conversation but let them continue until it broke down pretty bad. Even though it was on a hot topic for me (guns), I didn't see how that could help my job or career at all. Again from what I saw as an outcome the director had opposing views from the employees and they were on the "shit list" well into when I left the job. Tattoos are great, they are awesome, but as Brian said, "I dont want to be known as the tattooed guy from Finance", just the same as I don't want to be known as the "Gun nut from Pro Services" or the "Atheist from Sales". I don't go to work to "express myself", I go there to get a paycheck....and of course spend that paycheck on new tattoos!

  16. I made a halfass bs promise to not add more tattoos to my neck shortly after starting to date this girl, not really meaning it because I thought it was just pillow talk ("I love your neck, let me just have that one spot" "Sure babe"). Lesson learned about how serious that promise was, I figured it was fairly obvious I'd get more eventually. When I said I was about to do that (phone call, naturally) I got the DONT YOU FUCKING DARE DO THAT and after some bickering I got the FINE GO AHEAD AND DO IT (which never really means 'fine' but we all know that, I just heard all I wanted to hear)and never lived it down. Years later even after we aren't together if it comes up she'll still say how much she hates that bird hahah

  25. Propagandhi - Showdown This is an inescapable track from my sophomore year in high school. http://youtu.be/gzgG3HyRwV4 And then a band called The Adjustments did a cover of "boys of summer" called "the boise summer" (before any other punk covers, dammit) that was ALWAYS in rotation...I tracked down the CD recently because I couldn't find a digital copy....and after writing that i went ahead and uploaded it to youtube, thankyouverymuch, so here it is. I should throw some Op Ivy in there to complete my high school set; it's sort of a given.

Paleoish has worked for me for some time! I got lazy about preparing food recently and have been all sorts of sick. It feels great. Everyone's body is different so I am a big believer in doing what works for you - so if it is in line w your body you'll feel great. Good luck!

Exactly. By day 30 it ends up at something ridiculous like 5 minutes. By then I will very likely give it up just because that sounds incredibly boring but we'll see. :) I tried the paleo thing and found that I spent so much time worrying about food that there was no way it was worth it. Nutritionally, it seems mostly sound, but it really took south of the enjoyment out of my life that I decided not to care. Have you had similar feelings at all? Not trying to discourage you or anything, I'm honestly wondering if I'm the only person in the universe so wimpy about it.

Yep, jealous of all the boxing talk. I'm obligated to do it now. :) In the meantime I'm doing a couple 30 day challenges in addition to my usual and am finding the plank surprisingly difficult. Up to 40 seconds or so it's easy enough, but much more than that gets a bit hard. Clearly I have no core muscles

  37. I've gotten sucked into the comments. I'm surprised and actually gladdened to see this on LinkedIn. But I'd like to smack the middle aged white guys stating I think this guy has never seen or known anyone with a decent tattoo, or just immediately formed his negative opinion and climbed up on his high horse. Next time I look up someone I might do business with, I'm going to check back and see if they commented on this thread. That should tell a lot about a person.

It's possible to set a timer and hit a bag for intervals, and you'll get a metabolic hit and release some tension... ...but... ...You can't learn to box, or learn any martial art, from a book or a video, in my view. I'd really recommend a coach, the longer the better, really. Without someone to check your form and watch you, you're risking ingraining bad habits or courting injury. I've known guys to maintain their punching power just with bag work, and use it for fitness, but the other side of it is that without a moving, reacting pad man or sparring partner to test you it's hard to learn to land any of your striking effectively. You also never learn the hardest part of boxing: Defence. If there's no boxing coach nearby try an MMA gym or Muay Thai gym. You're unlikely to find yourself being elbowed in the face or beaten up... Possibly unless you ended up fighting in a professional bout. In training in most clubs safety is key, and most people have jobs to go in to the day after a sparring session. With 16oz gloves, gum shields and groin guards it's safe enough. If someone does want boxing DVDs then Donn Familton's "Superior boxing" is good. There are specific DVDs just on bag work also.
