  1. Ah -- you guys beat me to the punch but this is from the Perseverance book. But saying "fat black wind bars with scalloped edges" will suffice I think.

This is an old photo of a Bali mask he did on my friend John, he has extensive work from Tux as well. This is the flyer he gave me when we met; I looked really puzzled at 1991 when it was still October or November 1990 but I realized that he was printing them for the upcoming year. Or he was time traveling. Yup

Me neither but not everything needs to be a secret that only I have in a box that nobody else will ever be able to appreciate. I don't give out ALL the gold though hah.

  5. I really don't post up online too much of the things I have.....but I thought I would share this with everyone since it really is pretty cool! Tux and Dennis did have some business with each other......not 100% sure what happened but that is another story...LOL Since there seems to be a Maryland tattoo history undertone to this thread I will share my door......

He's the best ever. Such a nice guy. Yeah I have a whole bunch of friends working the show from all over but I'm not tempted at all. It's such a hectic show that it's overwhelming. In past years what I've done is fill a station in the Museum while some of those guys work the show. - - - Updated - - - I think I mis-spoke when I said that; he worked with Elio for a little bit up north between closing the OG shop and re-opening after finishing school. Nick and Thom are to be credited for teaching him.

  10. According to my sources the scalloped edges are called botan mikiri (scalloped background) but I agree with @Colored Guy here about bringing in examples if you're looking for something more specific than that.

  11. I understand this and feel like I'm willing to make concessions for tattooing iconography that I wouldn't make for anything else. The problem becomes that people who haven't spent much time looking at tattoos, which is most people, wouldn't necessarily understand that they're a nod to a style of tattoo. I think it's mostly down to taking responsibility for what you choose to get tattooed on you.

  12. I don't know if this is really "geeky" or not .....It's my "Analog Bunny" tattoo! Television (doesn't look as much like one as it should) with "rabbit ears" and the date that the US went totally digital with television and did away with the old analog system!

    Upcoming Tattoos

Wandered around my new neighborhood today, saw a tattoo shop, went in and got quite a surprise, walls are covered (must be 50+ sheets) in 1960's Eddie Peace flash. Chatted to his grandson Daniel for a while, he said there are tons more, we are gonna pour through them for some gap fillers once I get some time free, he also had some Polito acetates and some 80's flash (incl. some wizards!!!) from his parents. Was pretty psyched to find it so unexpectedly.

  16. By "take responsibility" I mean "be mindful" or something to that effect. Like, don't get a potentially controversial tattoo (yes, I know that all tattoos are controversial to some people) if you're not ready to deal with the fallout. I'm not, so I won't. Some people are, so they can. "Too bad if people are offended" sounds good in theory, but it's really hard in practice. Just trying not to be a douchebag/stupid.

  17. Here is an encouraging picture of a full back tattoo over acne scarring. I'm a little reluctant to post it, since it's not an uncontroversial style of tattooing here, but I'm mostly posting because it's a pretty extreme example of tattooing over acne scar tissue. It all seems to be older and lighter-colored, though. I have some (pretty minor in comparison) back scarring from compulsive picking and can't wait to cover it up.

  19. It's funny coming back to this thread now that I'm single, since my previous posts from a while ago I was in a relationship. He still does not have any tattoos, but all I know is I definitely want someone that has a major interest in it. I guess it's safe to say it's a fetish of mine, since it's a big part of my life... So the next one to come along it may have to be a requirement :) Just feels like a waste of time trying to explain this whole culture to a newbie....I think it's a big part of understanding a person on a fundamental level to begin with, and if you gotta explain it's a little draining...

I work at Gemini Tattoo in Odenton, MD (right across from Ft Meade Army base) but I am still in the apprentice stage! I am there a few evenings a week and all day on Saturday! My mentor wanted me to keep my daytime job in DC....so I essentially work two full time jobs between my daytime job and the tattoo shop plus the "homework" and the painting and drawing I need to have done each week! I've had this crazy schedule for 17 months no....LOL It's very possible that my Hubby and I could hop the subway one Monday when you are being tattooed and make the short walk over to Read Street! How long are your sessions usually with Dana?

@Bunny Switchblade @irezumi Being that I travel to Read Street every 3rd Monday or so, I'd love to meet you guys. Irezumi, I'd be very interested to know when/where you'll be guest spotting. Might not be able to finagle a tattoo, but I'd enjoy shaking your hand. Bunny, I know you've said it before, but where do you work? My next appointment with Dana is May 13th at 5. Is your shop close to Read Street? I could take a side trip and stop by and introduce myself. And yes Dana is working the convention, he said he was fully booked up except for 1 slot as of Monday. I am no where near as deep in the world as you guys are, so I can hardly appreciate what's going down here. I don't mean to derail the thread.

  22. First off if you want to look proper then you need to go over onto the chest as well. Which is awesome because that makes the tattoo even tougher. Super basic and easy to find book that has excellent images and basic explanations is The Japanese Tattoo by Sandy Fellman, and also really good one is the other The Japanese Tattoo by Donald Richie. The Ritchie book has less photos, and they are of an older generation of tattooers, but the information is excellent and well-researched.

  23. I am new to tattoos. I always thought they were cool, but had trouble getting past the issue of permanency. The funny thing about scars is, they are permanent. Finally realized, a nice cool permanent tattoo is a lot better than an ugly permanent scar.

  26. @eisen777 Sounds like good progress. You'll probably see a lot more if you stick with it. The upside of making strength gains is that when you start doing conditioning workouts for the fat loss (barbell complexes for example) you'll be able to use challenging weights. Agreed, good time of year for sports, walking and no-frills park workouts. Yeah, 3 sets of 10 would probably be 'good' going at the moment. Be interesting to see whether after this GTG my max has moved up... I think it probably already has. I think I'm going to aim for 50-60 a day for now. Switched from regular push-ups to diamond push-ups, looking for 60-80 a day. I'll stop this when my elbows complain! DeFranco is, for me, one of the best "one stop shop" guys for programming and sensible advice on training. I think I saw an older incarnation of that mobility set from him but not this version.

Oh wow that's rad, I hope you get lock those down! Yeah I met Tux when he was finishing up his BFA, which was the same year that I started my fairly brief period at MICA before becoming an art school dropout. That's also the same year I met Dana Helmuth at MICA; we became fast friends as well.
    2 points
  31. You answered a question i was thinking about asking privately @irezumi! I wonder how many people know that Tux actually took classes at MICA? :) Unfortunately.....when we were grabbing things out of Charlie's before the sale to the new owner.....there was some original hand drawn flash that Tux had done during his time spent with Dennis that we did not realize was in the lower racks! It went with the sale......although I am going to try to get some of it back at some point if it is ever for sale! I photographed just about everything in the place before the sale except what was in the standing racks......never thought they might contain hand drawn flash.....and I certainly had never noticed it! UGH

  32. I never really thought about being as heavily covered as I am......so make sure he really is okay with it doll just in case you decide you want to add more and more in the future! There are plenty of people who are totally fine with tattoos BUT it just isn't for them.....and that is totally cool as long as they don't try to stop you from being who you really are..... :)

  33. I have old (10+ years) cutting scars that were tattooed over last october and november, there's no knowing how they'll age but they've settled in nicely. I'm not sure I meet your standards (WRT GOOD)but thought I'd post anyway as in some places the tattoo goes right though the scarring, that's not something I was able to find many photos of myself. In both the photos the scars are more visible than in the flesh - the texture difference seems more apparent. Scars tattoos - - - Updated - - - crikey! That second photo is way too big - will try and sort that out! - - - Updated - - - Better like this, I think. My excuses. http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/0e/d0/6b/0ed06b32a0a7dea2833890308a49f5e7.jpg - - - Updated - - - (the stabbed turnip at the top isn't healed yet but doesn't touch any scarring either)

  34. I have a surgical scar from a shoulder injury (from a crash with a roadbike). This is a picture the day after surgery The scar didn't heal very nicely (as you can probably imagine from that picture ;-) ) And this picture a couple of minutes ago, you can still see a part of the scar without ink, and you can see the covered part. I also have some road rash on my elbowd, which is now covered by my sleeves.

  35. I have a big nasty keloid scar on my shoulder from surgery. It's an old scar, but still big, ugly and raised. You can still see it, but it's totally covered by the sharks tail. I did make the artist shift the tail to fully cover the scar, so the tattoo does look a little off. This picture is immediately after getting the tattoo. The scar is a little less raised now. I'm happy with it.

  36. I haven't really wanted to participate in this thread, I don't know, it seems like sometimes we are forcing an issue, even though I wholly understand the idea of power dynamics and cultural appropriation. I just believe some aspects of tattoo imagery are definitely cross cultural, especially when you think of where they came from. Would I get traditional Maori tattooing (something I know nothing about)? No. But I would get something in the vein of Leo Zulueta because of how he transitioned it. The same with the idea of an pretty young lady in a Native American headdress. It is wearable because I a) like pretty women b) like history. But that also comes through the adoption of images that were developed by the classic tattooers. I have a Confederate General tattooed on my leg. I'm not a bigot or sympathizer, nor do I want the South to rise again. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only person who has this person tattooed on them either. But, J.E.B. Stuart is a relative of mine, and I grew up in southern Virginia, on a tobacco farm. As stated before, it resonates with me, on some level, plus the dude had the best beard. I don't think there are concrete answers to be found. I just think people should do what they are comfortable with.

Unquestionably so. Dan would be the first to agree. Just look at this shirt; although he drew this after Dan started to develop his own style you can see where a lot of his early influence came from. Sorry for the huge pic; I can't figure out how to edit photobucket on the smartphone app.

No, wasn't Crazy John's. Had some generic name that I can't recall, this was in '92 or '93. @Bunny Switchblade I'm a little younger but not by leaps and bounds hah. I didn't meet Charlie but I did poke my head in there once to see what it was like. I wasn't as wowed as I was at Tux's; his shop looked like part antique shop part mystical shrine part tat shack so pretty much anything with wood paneling wasn't as interesting.

@irezumi how long did you work with Tux? East coast tattoo history, outside of NYC, hasn't been documented as well as it should have been. Of course Paul Rogers and Cap Coleman have a bit more around them, but there are so many rad guys that started in Baltimore, or Philadelphia, etc.
