This is my boy, Leo. Today is a very important day for Leo - it is his 1 year anniversary for being off insulin. He was diagnosed with diabetes in August 2012 and we started a tight regulation protocol that has a high success rate in "curing" diabetes in cats. Cats are the only creatures that can be cured. The protocol is very intense - shooting higher doses of insulin, testing blood glucose on average 6-8 times a day (ear sticks) and being available to feed different carb amounts of food, and squirting honey when needed during potential hypoglycemic events. The goal is to keep the cat at the bottom end of normal glucose values to let the pancreas heal. If the protocol is started within about 6 months of diagnosis, there is about a 70% success rate. We spent 9 months of hell getting him off the juice. I never slept more than 4 hours in a row, was up multiple times a night testing, sometimes up all night surfing him on honey when his pancreas unexpectedly sputtered out some insulin to compound the insulin I'd just shot into him. We had some scary nail-biting nights, but it was all worth it. He's off insulin and back to being a normal cat. He only eats low carb food, but other than that, we saved a furry little life. Diabetic cats are often put to sleep by owners who don't know their glucose can be regulated and that they can live long lives, even on insulin. Most vets don't know cats can be cured. (BTW - he's an indoor cat now.)7 points

Wait! What? Hold on, 45? No I distinctly remember meeting you and @DJDeepFried at the Perseverance exhibit and you both were in your very early 30's, mid-30's on a bad day, at most. I'm not calling you a liar, but well yeah, I don't believe that at all. Happy Birthday! - - - Updated - - - At worst, get the board graphic tattooed on you. It's pretty cool.6 points

@beez - I love your "Selfie w/dog" :D ...you match!! @Zillah - Your bun pics literally made me exclaim "Oh my god" aloud. @SeeSea - You are an inspirational pet guardian. @TrixieFaux - Tomo-kitty update? This is Mirka the Wonderpup. She is submissive "smiling" because I had just found a chewed up piece of cotton pad that she swiped from the kitchen table while I was out. She started doing it as soon as I saw it. People who say that they don't remember when they were naughty or won't know why you are chastising them are soooo wrong! Sneaky-sneaks!4 points

Love this so much. Dan did such a great job.4 points -
Probably not a lot to find out there besides logo tats, but let's still try to keep it interesting and original-ish instead of a exact duplication of the Santa Cruz hand or something. @Graeme inspired thread after reading of his recent skateboard purchase. Of course there is the Grime one, definitely one of my faves Not a shameless plug, just an awesome tat to share by Pee Wee The above having been said, I still feel compelled to include this Jim Phillips one from Dave Regan That's all I have at this moment, it's been a busy morning. I'll post more as I recall seeing or finding good ones.3 points

Ladies and Gentleman, we've got (some) color  Tonight we managed to do a 3.5 hour session of mostly greens and red. Unfortunatly we can't continue until the end of may... A six week break after 3 months of bi-weekly sessions... how am I going to survive that?! :p3 points

I got a second job on weekends now, to support my tattoo habit. But now I'm limited to only artists that work on Sundays! Off the top of my head, that limits me to: Scott Sylvia, Jeff Rassier, Tim Lehi and Cody Miller at Blackheart, Hector Fong and Chummy Alexanian at 13, Jonah Levin and Freddy Corbin at Temple.:cool: *humblebrag*3 points -

Tegaderm/Saniderm/Tatuderm healing process
tatB and one other reacted to DJDeepFried for a topic
So the Tegaderm experiment was inconclusive at best. Kind of a pain in the ass to put on -- though I bet I could do it perfectly now it being my first time and all. My plan was to set it and forget it while we went camping this weekend. Didn't quite work out that way. Plenty of seepage and weepage that first night. By the second my shoulder really hurt where he had packed in a lot of black and I started to get paranoid that it was getting infected. Morning of the third day I stripped it off in the shower and that was no fun. In all I don't think it hurt my tattoo but it certainly didn't help. My overall impression is that it put it into arrested development and didn't really start healing until I took it off. Might just stick to aquafor the next time around.2 points -

Henry Goldfield
kylegrey and one other reacted to MadeIndelible for a topic
I just got news last night that Henry is retiring in a few weeks, so I went in today to see if he wanted to do a ship on my arm. Talked to Rob at the Broadway shop, and he called Henry. Turns out he doesn't have time to tattoo because he's packing everything up at the tattoo shop. But! Henry will be doing guest spots at One Shot Tattoo on Irving, and they plan on announcing these when the time comes. Either way, we are retiring a true legend who will be missed greatly. Hopefully he still hangs out at the shop, so us youngsters can hear some stories.2 points -

Yesterday I was in my car sitting at a red light and the guy to my right motions to roll down my window, I do. He points to one of my tattoos and goes "'EY WHAT'S THAT MEAN??" The light turned green so I yelled out "I just liked how it looked!" as I drove away. Weird place for that conversation.2 points

Geek Tattoos
CultExciter and one other reacted to idyllsend for a topic
So I kinda consider myself Queen of geek tattoos. I'm a pretty big book nerd. The deer and lady head-horse are influenced by Harry Potter and Earth's Children respectively. The middle lady head is my history geekness coming through, and is inspired by Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon's first wife. Also, the lady head-horse is a coverup of some [badly done] elvish script, and I've another elvish script piece across my shoulders which is also to be covered up when I begin my back piece next year. And that is being covered up with a dragon, which is influenced by Smaug. :cool:2 points -
Geek Tattoos
gougetheeyes and one other reacted to CultExciter for a topic
@cltattooing You're busy drawing and making things. I think that is the most viable of reasons. I really shouldn't make time for them myself. I should really figure out how to draw lady heads better, or at least how to perfectly execute an upside down infinity symbol.2 points -

Hippie dippy alert (that comes partly from not yet having had a kid!): I kind of like the idea of my tattoos changing due to childbirth and other significant life events. They won't be perfect forever, and they shouldn't be, and so I will be happy for their transformation to be tied to my own.2 points
-
I don't want to make tattooing out to be more than it is, and I don't want to assume the reasons why people get tattoos, but isn't the case--even now with tattoos being mainstream--that there's some rejection of mass culture and the status quo involved in getting tattooed? That even though our homes may be filled with cheap disposable consumer goods made on the other side of the world by workers getting paid pennies per hour, that at least our tattoos are made by hand by skilled craftspeople that we actually get to spend time with and interact with? The thought that some people would see getting rid of the human aspect of tattooing as a positive thing IN ANY WAY really bums me out.2 points

I like the idea of a skull. Fits into the heaven/hell/death theme. Everyone should have at least 1 skull tattoo :)2 points

Scuba skull by Dan Trocchio. Have to take a picture with better lighting and color. For you scuba divers, I know it's not accurate. A rebreather doesn't create bubbles, but for my tattoo, looking cool took priority over accuracy.2 points -

No, my wife did. She is a vet tech and does id tattoos on animals at her clinic. My dog already had a 7yr old alphanumeric tattoo in one ear from the breeder...green ink and it is fading out and getting hard to read. So we took the opportunity to put an additional ID tattoo in the other ear while my dog was getting a dental and under full anesthetic. /offtopic1 point
