  8. I have a friend that wants her first and only tattoo to be a backpiece. I gave her a rough estimate of how much that'll cost, and how many hours we are looking at. I hope she pulls through.

  10. Never too early!! Yes, I am looking forward to it already - I have just secured an appointment with Horitomo, which is just, ridiculously exciting, I can't believe how lucky I am! I also talked to Filip Leu a couple of months ago about an appointment...but I will have to wait a couple months on that one, he didn't know if he has space and the person who deals with his convention appointments is off travelling, if he is full I totally understand - he must have people waiting a long time for a space with him! Last years convention was amazing, this looks like it might be even better!

  14. Is it too early to post this...? I know it's seven months away but I've put it in my diary. It looks like I will be getting tattooed most of Friday, all going well (it's far enough out that I'm going to sit on that for the moment, I'm superstitious about jinxing it). The last 1-2 years in a row I've missed this convention but this time around I'm looking forward to it - and hopefully meeting some LSTers. Anyone fired off any e-mails or secured some super-early bookings?

  18. First Tattoo Story: I was 19. My college room-mate and friend-to-this-day from the Yukon had just gotten a tattoo of Yoda on his upper arm after a bunch of us put up $20 each and dared him to do it. It was/still is pretty killer. After several weeks of us enduring his "hey guys, check it out, I'm drinking for two" jokes, we were sitting around the house one day. He was, as usual, admiring his new companion when he asked: "Hey man, if you were to get an impulsive tattoo, what would you get?". I hadn't really thought about it much, but as I was pondering my eyes rested on the massive pirate flag hanging in our living room. "I would totally do a skull and bones!" I said, to which he replied "......me too". Our third roommate came into the room around this time and asked us what was going on. We filled her in and she was way into the idea too. We made a blood-pact (or high-fived or something, it was a long time ago) and set out for the local shop. We got to the shop right before closing. It was a Sunday night and only one artist was still there (it was a smaller shop). We told him we all wanted tattoos together. He asked what do you want? We all said "Skull and Bones". He was quiet for a minute and said, "well I'm about to lock up, but since you want something cool let me close down the shop and let's do it...if you woulda said something lame I woulda told you to come back later!". So he locked up and we got tattoos! I went first and got a pretty straight forward skull n bones on my shoulder. Yukon went second and got a goofy looking skull and bones missing some teef on his biceps (his request: "can you make it look, y'know, shittier?"). Our third roomie got a mechanical/riveted skull n bones on the back of her neck. Pretty sure she was/is tougher than the rest of us! While the other two were going, I went across the lot to the pub and ordered a bunch of food for everyone and brought it back to the shop. After we were all wrapped up and giddy we had a meal with our tattooer, bullshitted for a bit then went home. All in all, it was pretty much the best thing ever. Man, I love that tattoo and those people! So I guess my first tattoo was a bro-tatty? Ha! What do you call it when one of your bros is a lady? Lessons learned that day: 1) Tattoos are fun. The experience is a huge part of it. 2) Trying to cram literal meaning in tattoos is for the birds. Or at least not for me. SKULL N BONES now reminds me of great times and great people. And Fun (remember fun?). 3) Impulsive tattoos are really really great. Don't let anyone tell you different. Thanks for listening...

  20. I posted an earlier pic of this chest piece, but today Tim Pausinger at The Pearl in Toronto finished things up. I'm super pleased with the results. Tattooing on and around nipples sucks. Worth it in the end though. Now, planning for an epic back piece begins. Oh FFS. Why is this image sideways. F' it. I'm going for a nap.

  26. Hu. straight edge, I learn something new every day. I'm sure a lot of you would disagree with me but I told my son to wait till his thirties to get a tattoo. I hope he takes my advice. The person you are at 20 is rarely the person you are at 30. Those ten years make such a big difference. This poor kid... when he really grows up his options for deciding on his future are pretty limited. I guess I made a lot of mistakes that are permanent when I was younger but at least I would have to sit down with a person and decide to share it with them, this is visible for everyone whether he likes it or not. I know your first instinct is to hate this kid for supposedly desecrating something you hold sacred, but man, he's just a kid.

  27. Thank you. Yes I know what you mean about his style. I think it will age well and still look nice in years to come. Thanks, it took me a while to decide what to have but I'm really happy with my choice now.

    Telling My Parents

Not judging at all, but it kinda blows my mind how sensitive people are to stuff like this. I never once considered not telling my parents, even though I was pretty sure at least my dad wouldn't approve. My mom digs all of them, but my dad doesn't care for them. The thing is, I could give two fucks if either one of them approve or not. Maybe I'm spoiled, but are there really parents out there who would stop talking to their own kids because they got tattooed? My dad might be an asshole about it every once and a while, but he can also be an asshole about religion and politics and we still get along just fine. Your parents probably aren't going to agree or love every decision you make in life, I don't think they are really supposed to, but when it comes to things like religion, politics, tattoos, etc. those are things that should be pretty easy for them to get over. Also @Jnvlv you should check out Immaculate Tattoo in Mesa. I just got tattooed by the owner Aaron Coleman, and he is a great artist and a super nice dude. That entire shop is just amazing. Telling My Parents

Well of course I agree with you I have been out of school since 2011 and have been paying my own things for a while now. I don't get any allowance or anything so these tattoos have been funded by my job

  37. I'm almost out of tattooable space on mybody which is a bummer but the upside is that I can start collecting originals from the tattooers I'm interested in. Andre Malcolm has some awesome watercolors for sale, check them out. I'm waiting on a response to buy the green dragon and the gold dragon paintings..... I really want this one but it's way past my budget... This is what I have so far, the first is a set of 3 prints from Grime that he printed on watercolor paper so he could continue to add to them making this set of prints all one offs... hese are done by my friend Horacio Martinez, the first 3 are oil and the last is ballpoint on a handkerchief... I'm trying to get a commission from Tim Lehi, he just emailed me and said he needs to catch with others and to contact him in 2 months, I want something like this...

    hardest artist to book

I got a full sleeve done around some existing pieces by Miles Maniaci when he was at CTC, maybe ten years ago. I walked in thinking I'd have Dale Grande do it, but he had stopped tattooing regularly and said "I've got thie amazing young guy working here now, and I think he'd go nuts on this". Excellent choice. Miles did a tracing of my arm, took the plates I brought in with the specific elements I wanted incorporatd in it, and called me back in a few weeks and asked me to come in and take a look. I did, and ended up having the wholepiece outlined that evening. Every two weeks we did another chunk, up to about six hours, until it was finished. He told me a flat rate-which was far less than anything being talked about here, but also was ten years ago. I apid it as we went, and made sure to leave a good tip at every session. Miles left CTC, went to Taylor Street Tattoo, and I heard from people trying to book work from him that he had a one-year waiting list. Wow. Now he works at Deluxe, and I never have heard anything but the highest praise for his work. Don't know if he's still booked out like that, cause I'm still hung-up on CTC. And that's a bitch! Shit, I had to wait two day to get Nick Colella to work on me once-it was turrible! I think way too much of what is going on now in parts of the tattoing world is celebrity/media driven, and that has resultied, IMHO, in inflated prices, long waits, and tattooers who are competent being billed as rock-stars. Of course, there are the genuine artists - tattooists - who are worth waiting for, but I think not that many. .02
