  11. This year's Montreal convention is still a long way off, but they just released the poster for the convention: Mike Rubendall did the poster and it's a truly great one. If past years are any indication, it'll be a while yet before we see what artists will be attending, but Val and Pierre from Tattoomania always do a tremendous job with the convention and get some of the finest tattooers from around the world to attend, it's held in a beautiful space, and it's a really fun time in a great city. We also had a little LST meetup last year and it was a real pleasure to meet some of you in person. This year, the convention is going to start off at the Yves Laroche Gallery with a showing of new paintings from Phil Holt, Timothy Hoyer, Lango Oliveira, and Edu Cerro and if you've been following those guys on instagram you know that the show is going to have some pretty spectacular pieces in it. Anyway, here are links to the convention: website instagram facebook Who is planning on going?

  13. Graeme's list is obviously great, and there are other guys at Invisible or King's Avenue that slay Japanese work as well. Damien Rodriguez has been putting out great stuff, and Matt Beckerich, Justin Weatherholtz, and Grez all do solid Japanese as well (although Justin and Grez are sorta more well known for other styles). You're very lucky to be in NYC. Do your homework and don't hesitate to wait and/or spend what it takes to get a good tattoo. You'll have it forever. Make sure it's worth it.

  14. You're in New York? Why go for "a lot of potential" when there people in NYC who do unbelievable Japanese work? Just off the top of my head, look into Chris O'Donnell, Mike Rubendall, Troy Denning, Shinji, Kiku, Chris Garver.

  19. Artist David Corden! We have tried something completely different work wise, totally out of mine and Davids comfort zones, it may not work but we tried for something different lol Brutally honest opinions chaps and girls lol we went for scribbly textured arty fartty style lol. We need to do more shading down the inside of the leg still and David said once its settled down we should see lots of textures. 10 hours on this and we still need to add more shading as its swollen really bad at the moment. What do you think?

  23. I was talking with a client of Shinji last year, and he said he's booked up for over a year.Kaz is originally from Japan, and has a private studio in the city. You probably don't have to wait as long. Instagram Rich works at NY Adorned two days a week, and does real nice Japanese work.He did two sleeves on a friend of mine, and they look great. Instagram Instagram I believe Bern works at Daredevil Tattoo. He also does excellent Japanese work. Instagram David does real nice Japanese work too.

    First tattoo - Dragon Koi

There are some great suggestions for unbelievable artists right there. The other thing I would say is how much do you want to stick to Japanese tradition? The only reason that I ask is that if you want it to be totally traditionally then a Dragon-Koi and lotus flowers are a bit of a contradiction as the fish is meant to be swimming up stream through some pretty fast flowing water, like the waterfall you mentioned, and lotus only grow in very still water like ponds. Flowers that would traditionally go with a Dragon-Koi would be things like chrysanthemums, blossoms or maple leaves. If you are more concerned with what the Dragon-Koi and lotus specifically mean to you or just the simple aesthetic then obviously that doesn't matter so much. Just another bit of information for you. I hope that you love whatever you ultimately get.

  26. Let's not forget Rodrigo Melo. Dana Helmuth frequently tattoos in NYC with Rodrigo Melo as well, I believe. Brian Kaneko is a frequent guest at Adorned and his Japanese is about as good as it gets in my opinion. At Three Kings, Adam Machin, Jeremy Sutton, and Josh Egnew do nice Japanese. There are so many good tattooers in NYC it's ridiculous.

    First tattoo - Dragon Koi

Welcome. 'RyuKoi', is great subject and makes for a really nice flowing tattoo. The best advice I could give you is to leave the composition up to the artist, as long as you go to really good Japanese specialist then it's going to be a very nice tattoo. Who is your artist of choice?

  28. They've stopped buying VHSes...they still sell them, but their stock isn't what it used to be. I could easily find a good five-seven movies worth buying every I went there. When I found out they would no longer be buying VHSes, I went there and bled them dry. That was one of the few places in Atlanta I could rely on for having a great VHS selection.

    Telling My Parents

So I called and spoke to my dad and told him I only mentioned 1 tattoo-I didn't say what it was or where, he didn't seem to care about that He was devastated and so was my mother. I guess her argument is that they have supported me and I used "their" money for tattoos, piercings and a name change-all untrue My dad is more concerned about health, which is understandable I guess I'll show them the arm one when they come out since it would be the easiest to show and hardest to hide. I don't think it's a good time yet to mention the back tattoos or the one coming up in March, which I am not going to cancel

    The Tattoo News

I'm really looking forward to the Lost Love flash book. I already have the Milton H Zeis: Tattooing As You Like It book and I think I'm more excited for Lost Love than I was the Zeis book. Also, if anyone knows what movie is played in the video, please share...I've tried looking it up and came up with nothing.

    Kitsune

I couldn't find many examples either for kitsune ideas when I was looking around, but I just asked Seth Wood if he wanted to draw one for my back - fortunately he was interested. I think you just have to find someone you trust and go for it!

  39. I posted an earlier pic of this chest piece, but today Tim Pausinger at The Pearl in Toronto finished things up. I'm super pleased with the results. Tattooing on and around nipples sucks. Worth it in the end though. Now, planning for an epic back piece begins. Oh FFS. Why is this image sideways. F' it. I'm going for a nap.

  43. Thanks, really appreciate it. Ironically someone just tore me a new one on our Instagram account about how we could possibly justify the pricing for a 10 seconds worth of work, they sadly failed to read the person had more then one tattoo and we do scale for very small pieces. Thanks for the support!

    Telling My Parents

How about letting them know in an e-mail, giving it a chance to sink in a bit before having to see or talk to them in person? I got my first tattoo at 22 and my mom hated it. I'm 44 now, still getting tattoos, and my mom still hates them and tries to argue with me about it. I argue a little and laugh it off. She loves me anyway and I love her anyway! I post my tattoos on facebook. At first I was blocking my mom from seeing them (I figured I'd protect her from having to see something that would upset her) but now I don't block her because I figure maybe it will desensitize her. Hasn't worked yet, oh well. My dad, on the other hand, is very supportive of anything I do and thinks my tattoos are cool. Yay dad!

  49. them lettering book are a "stepping stone" to what can be done. the truth is, if you trace the letters directly out of the book, it totally shows. there is nothing like hand drawn letters. even when i do OE letters, ill tape tracing paper over the original style and then redraw my version of them directly on top. hand drawn letters have much more soul in them than any traced letters will ever have.
