  3. Is it Sunday yet? I can't wait to get tattooed by Ron Henry Wells at the Philly convention. Another friend is getting done by him Friday, and then I have a friend getting tattooed by Eva Jean on Sunday. Oh, and my wife is getting her left arm (three quarter sleeve) outlined by Martin Lacasse on Friday. This is going to be a great weekend.

    Ukiyo-e

First I just want to get a rant out of the way. There was a picture of a tattoo done by Mike Rubendall posted on a tattoo community, and the comment's really annoyed me about how it was badly done, messed up face ect... It was a typical Japanese style tiger that looked great. Everyone is, of course, entitled to their opinions about their favourite styles but the ignorance of these people got to me a bit  Tattoo enthusiasts should really know about the influence of Ukiyo-e and Japanese tattoos. Anyway I thought we could have a thread to share some of our favourite Ukiyo-e pieces. This was the piece by Rubendall, and a Ukiyo-e tiger.

Yeah I didn't join this forum to do surveys. However, if you have some tattoo stories or pictures, I'm interested in those.

  9. Hey there! My first post and it's in a thread I am keenly interested in at the moment because I too am presently using tegaderm for the first time. I had the entire inside of my forearm done on Thursday night by Dan Smith and he was very recommending of Tigaderm. Here's my experience so far. Thursday Night - 3.5hour-ish session, finished up sometime after 10pm. Dan gave me two tegaderm sheets, dressed the tattoo fully with bandages and tape, and I went home. Woke up Friday morning, Took off bandages, showered and cleaned tattoo. Friday was leaving for a road trip up the central coast of california, and I wanted to make sure the tegaderm was really applied properly, so I went back to Captured and Dan was very courteous in cleaning and dressing the piece with Tegaderm. He told me it will fill with plasma and junk but not to be concerned. Sure enough, it did. Friday night I had trouble keeping some of it inside the bandage and actually stained the sheets at the motel while sleeping (Sorry Day's Inn Morro Bay!) I did have some trouble with one corner peeling up, and had to stretch it back down and use some tape to keep it down. It still curled up a bit. Through Saturday and Sunday the sheets simply stuck to me like glue, they are very breathable, and the plasma build up stopped pretty quickly. It all looks very dry (and brown) under the sheets. The tattoo really feels great now. I am probably babying my arm a little too much and being a bit cautious with it around my 4 and 1 year olds but I really am trusting this healing process and want it to work. Dan recommended I take three days time with it, so that would be this morning...will be peeling it off and cleaning + lubing with Hustle Butter in an hour or so, if you guys are interested I'll update you on how it went. Photos below are of the piece fresh and what it looks like after 3 days of tegaderm this morning....

    Ukiyo-e

People are dumb. Having said that there is something funky about some traditional Japanese tigers I've seen. I read somewhere that it's because there were no tigers in Japan so the images were based on written descriptions in Chinese literature. In fact I just Googled it: Tigers in Japanese Art | Arts & Culture | Smithsonian. Here's the example they use:

There will always be people who say that stuff about the Japanese style. "It's too cartoony for me", but that's just the way it is.

    tattoos of hands

I agree. Hands make for excellent tattoos. I have a small tattoo of clasped hands on one wrist and a hand of glory on my leg. The hand of glory was done by Chad Koeplinger last summer.

  13. HI, have just discovered this amazing site, which I am delighted to now be a member of. I'm particularly interested in good quality Japanese style tattoos and have a half sleeve shoulder chest panel by the late great Jason Saga, which won first prize in the Best Traditional Category of the Miami NTA convention. We were planning to complete to full sleeve and start the other side, then hopefully full back but he sadly died and I have been stuck ever since. Am hoping to find inspiration on here to continue my plan towards a full Japanese body suit. Wish me luck!

    Hi, new to this forum

Hi all! My name is Inna and I am new here (obviously!) I am also relatively new to the world of tattoos, it's been happening all around me for years, but only relatively recently have I realised I can be an involved and contributing member to this society, so hello and I look forward to being a part of this!

    Boom.

Love myself some awesome tattoos. Stoked about what is happening in the world of tattoo these days...amazing refinements of already awesome traditions and a lot of next level evolutions in technique and subject matter. Can appreciate all forms and styles. Prefer to wear more western traditionally styled work with a bit of Asian/Asian-influenced stuff thrown into the mix. BUT I still have A LOT of spaaaaaace and we all know how that goes :) ...anything could happen! I am both blessed and doomed to live in the Bay area of Northern California with tooooo much access to some of the most talented folks out there. Am definitely not above traveling overseas or who-knows-where to get work from someone who has caught my fancy. Celebrating (being in) my 10th year of marriage to my Hubbs with a tattoo odyssey that we have both been enjoying since January of 2013. First two tattoos from Chris Trevino (Perfection Tattoo - Austin) at the tender ages of 20 and 26 (late 90's). Getting tattooed right out the gate by someone who has put so much into their craft taught me more about tattoo than I think anything else could have and for this I am thankful. I love having tattoos. It has been such a great experience. I love hearing about other peoples tattoos. I want to be surrounded by tattooed people and their tattoo stories :o . Upcoming appointments are Horitomo in January, Theo Mindell (Feb-March), Stewart and Valerie (late April-May). Will take pictures of existing work and upload soon. I am pretty darned stoked and glad to be here. So thanks in advance, everyone, for that! :D

Oookay...was going through storage and found this pic of my Korean white tiger by Chris Trevino in 1995. My first tattoo! Sorry I haven't updated my gallery yet...in the works. Thanks for strolling down memory lane with me! And also, @hogg, I was in Austin from 1993 to 2000...wouldn't it be weird if we knew each other?!

  25. Some progress on my frontpiece with my boss, Josh Cruse. Did about three hours of color in the snake all around my chest and belly. I have another sitting in two weeks, but I'll probably hold off on posting anything until we get it all done... after it's healed and settled, we'll touch up anything that needs it and add some pattern work in that minty green stripe on the snake.

  30. Short time lapse video I made of a painting a few nights ago... decided to try to do a rose to fill up a scrap piece of Arches, with no pre-drawing or sketch of any kind. Also, I forgot my real webcam, so it's 240p. To top it all off, a bad Instagram photo... I need to be a better documentarian.

  31. Hey there, just dropping a line into the initiation thread real quick...my pseudonym isn't very creative :)...my name is Lenny Sandvick, I served an apprenticeship under Steve Gold and Spike Bieganek from Steve's Tattoo in Madison, WI. I have worked between Steve's and Spike-O-Matic Tattoo since 2006. I joined this blog to be a part of the larger tattoo community and since I heard this forum was put on by Scott, I had to join after my fiancee and I had a really good experience with him in September 2008. I got a skull and top hat and she got a flaming grenade. We'll try and post pictures soon. I'm just really thankful to get to do this job day in day out and am really excited to be a part of this great forum so as to get a deeper insight into our history. The videos are too good. I enjoy painting flash, hanging with my dogs and fiancee, and travelling to get tattooed and work, namely at Chinatown Tattoo in philly and Hero Tattoo in Conway, SC. Many, Many thanks to Steve and Spike, Braden, and Jeff and everyone who's tattooed me or let me tattoo them. Hope you'll have me, sorry it got long. Thanks again!! take care -Lenny

    Hello All from Iowa

Welcome Tim. Like Graeme said, this forum is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to tattoos. Everyone has very good artist suggestions and are very friendly, so browse through the forum and definitely check out the interviews. They are great sources of history and are pretty entertaining as well. And I too want to know who did that tattoo.

My family's first dog was a german shepherd and she passed when I was 11. She was one of my best friends growing up and I've loved dogs ever since. Right now my family has a bichon frise. I really want to get a dog of my own but my apartment building does not allow animals. I recently got a portrait of my german shepherd in the inside of my arm.

  41. if a client comes to me with a picture of someone else's tattoo I tell them that we can recreate the concept of the piece but NEVER the same exact piece. if they are not ok with this then they don't need to get work from me. it's that simple. of course, I'm a bit spoiled / lucky that I'm busy enough to turn down any work ( I remember a time when I first started where I would do anything the client wanted) but I just can't bring myself to spend that many hours working on someone and having them walk away with something that I had no part in creating.I just can't put the love in. it's a bummer and completely defeats the purpose of getting a tattoo or making the tattoo for me personally.

    Boom.

I think the best part of this intro is the feeling that I'm getting lately from LST and the rest of the tattooed world, that -- sorry, gonna get real emotional here -- as a wearer of tattoos, you wear them through your life and it becomes part of your journey. And sometimes it's flipped -- you go on your tattoo walkabout when you're a little more flush with cash and they can become the catalyst for travel, friends, for your life. That it's all intertwined. And shit, most of us on here don't even do this for a job. The other best part is obviously your Trevino tattoos and your killer appointments coming up. WELCOME, GODDAMNIT!

    Hi!!!

@SailorClaire Matt Lodder beat you to it by a few years. My opinion of this subject aside, I presume you've read The Post Modified Body? I skimmed your proposal and read the first questions. I must say, I'm not impressed. You won't get any further insight or information than a Daily Mail article or any of the tattoo books you can buy in HMV. Here's my opinion: When it comes to tattoos (and probably other areas of life), anything online is very far from the reality of the situation. Speak to real people in the real world and get a more honest view of what you're writing about. I don't know why I keep saying this to academics, they rarely listen...
