Ukiyo-e
MadeIndelible and 6 others reacted to TaeTae for a topic
First I just want to get a rant out of the way. There was a picture of a tattoo done by Mike Rubendall posted on a tattoo community, and the comment's really annoyed me about how it was badly done, messed up face ect... It was a typical Japanese style tiger that looked great. Everyone is, of course, entitled to their opinions about their favourite styles but the ignorance of these people got to me a bit  Tattoo enthusiasts should really know about the influence of Ukiyo-e and Japanese tattoos. Anyway I thought we could have a thread to share some of our favourite Ukiyo-e pieces. This was the piece by Rubendall, and a Ukiyo-e tiger.7 points -

Frank Carter, Frith St. He drew this on in quite an awkward space between two pieces on my leg. Super nice guy, had fun getting this one. First time in Frith Street! And I robbed this picture from Frank's Instagram btw3 points -

@pcolevr definitely see a doctor. Could you call the shop? Also, just to say what everyone may be thinking... that place might not be as "reputable" as it sounds...2 points -
You might want to see doctor just to make sure nothing serious is going on.2 points

hello and welcome! you've found the best forum yes. no question bout that! and yeah, we do not talk techniques or stuff like that. we leave that to tattooers and their apprentices. and not on the internet for everyone, since it is not for everyone! anyhow...please enjoy LST and make sure to check out the interview vids and, well, everything else!2 points -
Check out the stickeys - there won't be much "shop talk" here, at least technical-wise. I've got ships arriving here from Pt.Lisas almost every week.2 points

Picture taken 2 days ago, lots of swelling but worth it! Note, the black filling covers a small outdated tattoo. Cannot post my picture so gotta link it. http://instagram.com/p/jhkaCqTaLf/ Sent from my SGH-T989D using Tapatalk 22 points -
Got my right chest done a week ago. Went to the appointment thinking "well it couldn't be as bad as lower leg, towards the knee ditch...right? Right?? Then the needle punctuated me. Fuck me. Towards the nipple, and towards the armpit was pure hell. Interestingly enough, collarbone and sternum weren't painful, just really uncomfortable because of the vibrations. And the artist wiped the ink off always in the same direction over my collarbone, towards the end I reeeallly had to restrain myself not punching him in the face. In the end I sat 4 and a half hours, was worth it.1 point

Ron Wells for really cool, simplistic lettering. Freddy Corbin and Katie Sellergren for script.1 point -
Had this Jonah and Rock of Ages sleeve worked on yesterday by Juan "Superfly" Arreguin here in Leon Mexico. The only thing I am not sure is of this little filler that he did in the ditch - it is a skull but without black lines, just some blue lining and blue shading. I guess I will have to wait and see once it's healed. Other than that, completely stoked! Sorry for the crappy pictures.1 point

I'm new here, but I've been around a bit lurking. I run a little shop in Victoria BC (Canada) called Tattoo Zoo. I've been making tattoos for almost 18 years, and I can't see myself stopping anytime soon. Looking forward to using this site to meet some new people! You can check out most of what I do: instagram @gerrykramer Thanks1 point -
I hope they make the exhibition catalog available to the public online/mail. Otherwise I would ask a big favor of anyone attending to help me grab a copy. I saw what look like a sneak preview of it on FB and it appears to be a bound hardcopy:1 point

Tattooing and photography are totally different skills. The most powerful tattoos can't be adequately photographed because magic is resistant to photography.1 point

Wow @RScott that sleeve is amazing!!! And @Synesthesia that rabbit is looking so nice! Here's the fox I got yesterday from Ron Wells, tough to get a good photo. Was supposed to fly in, get the tattoo, and fly back out last night but due to the snow storm I'm now stuck in NYC until tomorrow. So getting this little guy has turned into an unexpected vacation / adventure / chance to hang out with old friends.1 point -

Photo heavy post... I'll include the captions from the Life article where appropriate. Not going to post the whole Irezumi book because there's lots of images, and there's something magical about flipping through that thing... some things are best discovered through some digging. These are by far the coolest shots from it, though. The tattooer they cover is called Apache Harry. There's a shot of his travel kit and flash set up on the first page. He has a sign reading "Tattoos Removed Without Scars. Apache Harry. #22 Bowery NYC." "For decorating 'Six Ring' Dutch and other clients, tattooist Apache Harry makes $3,000 a year." "Front view of Michael Brandmaier. His 300 designs by Apache Harry are worth $400." "Rear view of Michael Brandmaier. It took four years to tattoo him all over." " 'Professor' Wagner is responsible for this girl's condition." Irezumi, 1966.1 point -
Scary Stuff in Today's News
XOXO reacted to cltattooing for a topic
Oh man... really sad to hear that. Honestly though, I was expecting to read about how one of the shop employees had raped a customer, and I'm really glad that wasn't the case. Until now, I've kept my political and social views separate from the board as many people would consider them fairly radical and I do not wish to create any animosity, but since this has already been brought up, I'm gonna throw in my two cents. Being that women make up 51% of the world population, I think it's safe to say that everyone has women in their life that they care about, be it relatives or friends. I fully believe that every single person has a moral obligation to question and deconstruct the reasons why violence against women or further, femininity, happens with little to no repercussion. I'm sure most people, when asked to do so, would say "what are you talking about! I don't think violence against women is acceptable, that's ridiculous!" And surely, I think that most people do feel that way on a superficial level. It's just way more subversive than that. From calling our possessions (cars, power tools, tattoo machines, etc) "she," to Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines retaining consecutive airplay and VMA performance after heavy criticism, to scented tampons, to rape jokes (see video below), and dismissing women's valid emotions and opinions as hormonal craziness, we have a huge problem with dehumanization. And if anyone who wants to take a little trip back to any world history classes you've taken, I'm sure you'll remember that objectification and dehumanization are age-old tactics for conditioning soldiers to feel no remorse in the midst of combat. I also fully believe that nobody has the power to change any world but their own, so if that article bothers you and if violence against women bothers you, then make an effort to change the way you think about femininity and feminine empowerment. And fo real, thanks for posting that article.1 point -

Happy Christmas, as you lot say: By Matt Staydohar, Anvil Brand Tattoo, Marysville, CA.1 point -
HAHA, there are two things I want to do at the moment: pay down student loans (still paying off undergrad ugh) and get a full on tattoo body suit. While blowing my tax refund money on tattoos is ideal, it still leaves me with my student loans. The plan is to do both in moderation. Not pay off the entire student loan, but not blow it all on tattoos. But shit man, I'll live vicariously through you. Blow it all on tattoos!1 point

Definitely want to get something at Blackheart once my tax refund comes in.1 point

"If it's on the internet, it's fair game," is such a bullshit cop out imho. You do pose a tough question though. The art of tattoo has always had copying and repetition. All the classic designs have been done to death and occaissionally been reinvented by the more brilliant and forward thinking artists. But, we're talking standard flash here and not original works of art based on japanese tradition. To me, the examples sited above equal "unforgivable plagerism". No matter how taken I was with a design of this nature, I could not in good conscience wear it as my own without making significant changes and an artist that would take credit for it is....well.....I'll leave it at that.1 point

Perseverance - Japanese Tattoo Tradition in the Modern World
slayer9019 reacted to Stewart Robson for a topic
Another frustrating part is trying to finish work in time for the photo shoots! I'm SO FUCKING STOKED to have been asked to be part of this. The exhibition will be amazing but the catalog will be on a different level. So much of what most modern Western tattooers and customers know about Japanese tattooing is because of Taki (Shodai Horitaka) - He has published invaluable books at affordable prices that we (Japanese tattoo lovers) have all benefitted from. He has also published books about other styles of tattooing that were awesome. If that isn't enough, he was also responsible for most of my favourite interviews in Tattoo Life magazine with some of my favourite American tattooers. Many of his books form key parts of a tattooer's library. They stand well on their own but also are perfect as jumping-off points to delve deeper into the subjects if you're that way inclined. I think the Perseverance catalog will do the same.1 point -

FST: On the Shoulders of Giants
spookysproul reacted to Stewart Robson for a topic
@Iwar Thanks. I knew someone here would find it eventually. Thanks for sharing. I've told a few people face-to-face about this project but I want people online to find this on their own, for now. If I shout about it and create hype, everyone will be bored of waiting by the time it's finally finished. I expect a long gap (at least 6 months) between the last shot and the finished edit. At the moment I'm doing this 100% on my own - Camera, lights, sound, music, graphics, editing, planning, photography, layout, writing, interviewing, transcribing, promotion, etc etc. I'm glad you like what I've done so far. As well as the guys at the shop I have some great people lined up to get interviewed too. Some of them you know, some you don't know. Actually, on the subject of transcribing... I do need help. Lately I've been thinking about asking for help but I wasn't sure to do it here, twitter or wherever. Without turning this into a sob story, I can't transcribe every interview myself. I've done a few but my wrists can't take the strain of tattooing 5 days a week and typing for 2. Having hard-copy interview transcripts is essential to the editing process. So I guess this is an open offer for someone to have some low paid, occasional, boring work but to help out on a project that I think might be interesting. I don't have the budget for professional transcription services (actually, I have zero budget, everything is paid for out of my own pocket) but I can pay a percentage of the standard professional rate. If you think you'd like to help or know someone who'd like to help, email [email protected] Thanks. HOOPER versus PECKer: The footage of Oliver getting tattooed was almost an hour long. It was tough to cut some of the hilarious one-liners but the best ones are in there. @Scott R I'm the guy holding the camera. We did meet at the SFO convention. There ware lots of people watching Oliver get tattooed from outside the room, but the guys you can see while Thomas gets tattooed are Chad Koepliner, Stefano C, Shane Wilcox, Me and Thomas' friend James.1 point -
