mystictattoo and 8 others reacted to motsimus for a topic
Hey Guys So i have decided to travel to the states from Australia around July/August for a couple of months possibly with another tattoo friend of mine and would love to meet a heap of you guys while I'm over there. We are planning to start in San Francisco and travel across the country to New York hitting a lot of shops on the way for walk-ins (not going with a plan). I just wanted to use this thread as a kind of home base for information for the next few months. Thanks LSTers Also i will probably be doing a travel blog thing aswell.9 points -
28th might be my last session with Rubendall. He thinks we're going to wrap things up in the 6 hours I have booked. I have additional appointment times booked so we'll see. :D9 points

Thank you, yes at least on my arms... Can't rule out ever getting color...buuuuut, probably won't. I love the way color looks on others, but aesthetically I guess I prefer either all color or all b&g rather than mixed and b&g suits me.4 points -

Some Thoughts and Observations

Haha, isn't it a trip how experience shapes perspective! I think a lot of, if not most people experience somewhat of a more profound change within themselves. You will find many small anecdotes of that phenomenon through the forum. Welcome to LST! Can we see the tattoos you have?2 points -

Thank you! @ironchef, you would be absolutely correct. Laying down in his space was a great experience to be had. He's a very nice guy too. I'm not sure if it's been mentioned previously but both Horitomo and Yokohama Horiken have rooms to work in while everyone else at the shop works in an open plan. The rooms are raised platforms and you remove your footwear before entering. You lay out your towel on the floor and he sits to tattoo. Very traditional. Being able to lie there and see him work, see his drawings for ongoing or upcoming tattoos/paintings, seeing his reference materials, and the little sculptures of Fudo Myo-o was a great time and while laying there being poked on the feet may not sound fun, I'm pretty sure I was wearing a goofy smile the whole time. BTW, if anyone was wondering, to me, shading by tebori didn't feel as painful as by machine.2 points -
And this happened yesterday! I love Caturdays. By Horitomo at State of Grace (duh!). The outline and black shading are by machine. The white shading is by tebori. My first tattoo that uses color ;-) http://www.intagme.com/horitomo_stateofgrace/625645608470926116_177828155/ I swear I have the fugliest feet in all of Hobbiton. Ha! Well, before the tattoo that is.2 points

Numbing cream for involuntary twitching
cvportagee reacted to Lance for a topic
Yes, bactine. I know Jill's used that stuff on me and I believe Horitomo too. I can't say it worked either cuz it still hurts but maybe it makes it hurt just a little bit less. That said, I was still twitching when Horitomo was tattooing me. At some point your body just kicks in defensively even though your mind is perfectly fine with going on and on and on.1 point -
So who's next? I'm headed in on the 13th.1 point

Pre and post-tattoo rituals
Colored Guy reacted to KBeee for a topic
This is an interesting thread! I always exfoliate and moisturize but 2 weeks before I intensively exfoliate and moisturize the going-to-be-tattooed area. The week before I focus on drinking at least 2L of water of day to make sure my lymph is moving well and no sugar or caffeine. The day of I try to eat well but not heavily, bring snacks if it runs more than 2 hours and after I want some kind of massive protein and starch mega meal. 5 Guys, lettuce-wrapped, bacon cheeseburger and cajun fries is my favorite. (Unless I am at Spider Murphy's than I want Sol Food Puerto Rican and in Berlin I ate the most gigantic plate of schnitzel and spaetzle ever...but y'all get the idea). Sometimes I wash that night sometimes I don't but I definitely whine a lot and get crabby for the next 24-36 hours....which is really the most important part of the ritual. The whining and crabby-cakes. My husband loves it.1 point -

There are a ton of people who can do great traditional tattoos in Brooklyn. If you want to real traditional, you can get tattooed by Tony Polito or Mike Perfetto. Smith Street (in Carroll Gardens), Greenpoint Tattoo (Greenpoint), Flyrite Tattoo (Williamsburg), Hand of Glory (Park Slope) will all give you a great tattoo. Plenty of options available.1 point -

Hi, welcome to LST! Sounds like an awesome job you have :) So by the sounds of it, if you are allergic to surgical steel, it is unlikely that you can be tattooed at all, at least not by any methods that use an electric tattoo machine or other tattoo methods that use surgical steel needles. I would talk to your doctor and see if that would be an issue for you. I believe that some hand-tapped tattoos use bamboo instruments, but these kinds of tattooing usually follow a certain form that you may not be looking for. Anyhow, I wish you luck and thanks for coming here with your questions. I hope you enjoy the numerous resources the website has to offer!1 point -
Look up the Gypsy Gentleman and watch all of those, well worth it Also check out the interviews on here Scott Sylvia's interview is great if you have plenty of time to watch it.1 point

I am a fairly social person but do not like talking about my tattoos with those that I feel are just being nosey. My standard answer... Them," Hey where did you get those tattoos?" Me, "prison" Although my work I think is exceptional and def not prison work(Ive never attended!) this response typically pushes people way from me while they make sure they still have their wallet and/or purse. If you want to be flat out mean and are in a bad mood....When they ask "Did it hurt"....just reply, "not as much as the sex I traded it for."1 point
