    The ED HARDY Thread

This picture posted Jill Bonny on her Instagram-profile 36 weeks ago. The man on the left is the same person you can spot in Ed Hardy's Tattoo Time - Music & Sea Tattoos. The back is from 1980 and still looks absolutely amazing.

    Shop etiquette question

This is a pretty common thought from clients....... ......I explain to them that tattoo "collectors" are different than people with tattoos.... I push clients to explore the world of tattooing and collect tattoos from folks who create the kinda stuff they dig. Especially if your already interested in travel. Work a tattoo appointment into a vacation..or a trip.... Get work from outside your bubble. So...whether it be from 3 guys in one shop.....3 shops on one block or 3 shops around the map.... The goal should be to get excited about your collection. Any shop that has tattooers tattooed by many, should endorse you getting tattooed by ANY... As long as it's good solid work.... Go get it... Anywhere you find it....

  4. This happened in Subway about a month ago. Some inebriated guy came up to me as I was ordering: "Woah, look at your tattoos...your sleeves...you look dynamite! Can I lick your arms? I want them on my tongue!" I said maybe another time and he gave me a high five and left! Hahahah

  7. I was making a joke by suggesting that the only reason someone would get tattoos is to appear tough, and therefore it should be a good thing that people think you are tough because of your tattoos. Admittedly, these types of jokes don't work well through text (in fact, I've found that even in person people often don't catch my sarcasm). If we really wanted to look tough, we'd be getting shitty tattoos that nobody would bother us about (mayber because they would feel threatened). Instead, like an idiot, I just have to go out and get tattooed by good artists, and then I get old ladies bothering me about them in grocery stores and shit.

    Boom.

I think the best part of this intro is the feeling that I'm getting lately from LST and the rest of the tattooed world, that -- sorry, gonna get real emotional here -- as a wearer of tattoos, you wear them through your life and it becomes part of your journey. And sometimes it's flipped -- you go on your tattoo walkabout when you're a little more flush with cash and they can become the catalyst for travel, friends, for your life. That it's all intertwined. And shit, most of us on here don't even do this for a job. The other best part is obviously your Trevino tattoos and your killer appointments coming up. WELCOME, GODDAMNIT!

    Boom.

Love myself some awesome tattoos. Stoked about what is happening in the world of tattoo these days...amazing refinements of already awesome traditions and a lot of next level evolutions in technique and subject matter. Can appreciate all forms and styles. Prefer to wear more western traditionally styled work with a bit of Asian/Asian-influenced stuff thrown into the mix. BUT I still have A LOT of spaaaaaace and we all know how that goes :) ...anything could happen! I am both blessed and doomed to live in the Bay area of Northern California with tooooo much access to some of the most talented folks out there. Am definitely not above traveling overseas or who-knows-where to get work from someone who has caught my fancy. Celebrating (being in) my 10th year of marriage to my Hubbs with a tattoo odyssey that we have both been enjoying since January of 2013. First two tattoos from Chris Trevino (Perfection Tattoo - Austin) at the tender ages of 20 and 26 (late 90's). Getting tattooed right out the gate by someone who has put so much into their craft taught me more about tattoo than I think anything else could have and for this I am thankful. I love having tattoos. It has been such a great experience. I love hearing about other peoples tattoos. I want to be surrounded by tattooed people and their tattoo stories :o . Upcoming appointments are Horitomo in January, Theo Mindell (Feb-March), Stewart and Valerie (late April-May). Will take pictures of existing work and upload soon. I am pretty darned stoked and glad to be here. So thanks in advance, everyone, for that! :D

If you read the front flap of the book it sounds like the book is going to be as much about Ed Hardy the brand as it is about the tattooer, but the clothing stuff is covered in a chapter. The rest of it is about art, tattooing, and his life. It's a really good read.

  20. Hi Ry4n! If you haven't already, check out the Fine Arts Library on your campus. If you are lucky, they may even have an Asian library or collection. And don't stop at your campus. Most colleges allow general admittance to their libraries and California is chock-a-block with institutes of higher learning. I have enjoyed several UC libraries this way (including Berkeley...they have some of Horiyoshi's books including 100 Demons...that was a really fantastic day:D ). It's old school but still my favorite way to find inspiration. Take a day. Do a general search ("Japanese art" or whatever). Get an idea of where your subject is and walk the rows. Pull the books that seem interesting/have a lot of pictures and sit and flip. When you find something you like, photocopy or cell pic that bad boy. There are things in university libraries that you will never come close to finding on the internets...magical things...

  22. There's this new one on the market called keeping it out of the sun. - - - Updated - - - Sorry, that was snarky. But seriously, the best way to keep your tattoos looking good and bright is to keep them out of the sun as much as possible. Probably the best way to do that is to cover it with clothing, otherwise wear sunblock when you're out in the sun. - - - Updated - - - Sorry, that was snarky. Latest tattoo lowdown.....

Thanks guys!! The whole experience was fantastic :) Nick was great, the shop was great, the dragon is blowing my mind every time I look at it. One thing for certain, this thigh tattoo is *way* easier on the day after than calves or knees have been. I can just stand up and walk! ;) No throbbing at all! It's great because I'm planning to get out and about in Chicago today, it's my first time here and I can't wait to get out and see some of it Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2

  24. HAHA, you'd have to pay me to do the whole thing, but the discussion around 16:00 about successors is pretty interesting. He says that until three years ago, he had a successor (Horitoshi II) lined up, but that the successor did not abide the rules of the family and was expelled. Then, he had a Horitoshi III lined up, but that this potential successor had no intention of leading the family. So, he has decided that they will elect a Horitoshi III democratically between him and his three oldest "sons." The ideal successor, he says, has to be good at tattooing, but also a man of character. He has to be mild-mannered because he (Horitoshi I/the family) has various domestic and international relations to maintain, and dedicated to the family. In another really interesting bit of the interview, at around 24:00, he says his "family" differs from other families in that his relationship with his "family" members is really one between father and son rather than master and apprentice. The apprentices start as such, but after spending some time apprenticing and being deemed worthy based on character, they become his sons. That is why they call him "Oyaji" (Pops) rather than "sensei." Despite this, in the most unfortunate case, he says, an apprentice/son left the family after six years. Finally, towards the end, Horitoshi expresses his devotion to the preservation of tebori as a Japanese tradition. He says that ultimately, he is teaching his apprentices to maintain tradition. The Horitoshi Family, in Japan, he says, is the family most dedicated to tattooing as a Japanese tradition. Machines could be used for lining, but shading has to be done by hand to preserve tattooing as a Japanese art. He doesn't think tattooing will be accepted in Japan anytime soon, but maybe in fifty years, Japanese people will have a more "casual" attitude toward it.

  25. My fiance is going to rehab for a month next week, so I have decided to spend the time he is away writing a letter to him telling the story of our relationship. I've been in a writing lull lately, but I think this will help me get through the next month with plenty of material and also will be a sort of catharsis for all the shittyness going on in our lives right now. We are en route to get married next summer or the following (should his sobriety stick this time around), so I'm hoping to give him this piece of writing as a wedding gift. Sorry for getting so heavy on this thread, but I'm stoked to start working on this and think it's an "awesome thing" :) I'm a firm believer in finding and holding onto happiness in our darkest moments.

  27. I can l probably best explain it like this. I am currently getting tattooed by two guys in the same shop at the same time. Yup that's right. Regino on Saturday, Matt on Sunday. They seem to have zero problem with it and usually swing by whenever the other is tattooing me to look at what they are up to. Go for it!

@Cork Horitoshi I gave it to the man with the donburi suit as a "gift" when he finished his suit. It's a traditional Japanese motif that's supposed to bring good luck, but in this case, it's something Horitoshi puts only on people he really likes and he feels really understand his work. There are about 30 people in the world who have it. Both men in the video have it, and it makes them "like brothers" in a sense.

  39. Just remembered that I forgot to post pictures from my visit to LA/SF, but better late than never I guess. My only regret is not taking more. Some spots we visited (Bottom left is @ian (left) and me outside Temple Tattoo) @hogg and I have matching torch and spider fillers... As is that wasn't enough @scottSylvia gave us matching LST ban hammer tattoos a few days later. This is from the first of two sessions I had on my back with Grime. A few souvenirs When I returned to LA Bob Roberts gave me this All in all a great trip, and I cannot wait to visit again next year! I'll try to take more photos then too :)

Horimasa Tosui from the Horitoshi Family is my favourite. In my opinion his doing some of the best Tebori oneshots (and big work) in the business. It´s very easy to recognize that his master is Horitoshi 1; These are 12 years old. Look how bright they still are; I got this one from him earlier this year: I also love alot of other Tebori-artists, some of them are mentioned over here. Horizakura, Horitomo..

  41. Yesterday morning at 7 AM my girlfriend, my cousin, and myself drove down to Richmond to get tattooed by Max Kuhn. It was my 3rd session on my back and we got about 4 more hours in on it. My girlfriend got her stomach finished My cousin came along and got his 3rd tattoo. I just took him to get his first back in June or July from Shrewsbury, then he got tattooed by Lowercase J last month.

    Full Back Piece Thread

So today was my second session with Henning on my backpiece and it was a tough one. Started bright at early at 9:30am at Kings Avenue Long Island. This was probably the most painful and longest tattoo session I've ever had. We both under-estimated the time it would take for Henning to finish lining some additional feathers and to shade in the rest of the background. The first 5 hours were relatively low key. The last two hours were terrifying. I now know I will probably not entertain a torso piece anytime soon as the pain from the ribs was just brutal. This was the first time I considered tapping out but I was able to bare down and we managed to finish. Here are some pics. Color next year for the phoenix. Next session will be with Rubendall in December to put more color into the dragon. Big thanks to @Killercook76 who dropped by today for moral support and assisted in taking some pics. He showed off his Garver and Hendricks pieces which were AMAZING. Cheers bro! I love this guy but he "royally" kicked my ass today... Added some more feathers and filling in the top Background fully shaded Right side from Tuesday's session Left side from today

I know the shop I go to they have so much respect for each other they love it and are always checking up each others work. I,m planning on working my way through all the artists too in the shop , even interested in collabs as well.
    1 point
  45. I'm working to get tattooed by everyone in the shop I frequent. I've never heard about it being a problem. In fact, the artists seem to enjoy seeing what each other is up to. The only time I think it might raise eyebrows is if you are getting one artist to change or cover up another artist's work. Again, the situation would largely be dependent on the personalities involved - including the client.
