Well it finally happened and I got tattooed by Stuart Cripwell today. Even though we had to rush like crazy and were still 30 minutes late to our appt. (which ended up making us miss the dinner tonight - sorry to everyone who went). I got this cowboy on the last big spot left on my arms. My girlfriend got this Sorry in advance if they are huge but I'm posting from my phone.11 points -
Yesterday. (I got a lot done this week!) Panther head + rose (and a smattering of stars and dots): Again by Eddie Martinez, Supergenius Tattoo9 points

Thanks again to everyone who made it out - it was great to meet you all in person and to catch up with those of you I have met before. The time flew by too fast! Here's the only pic that didn't have everyone looking like zombies from the flash. Seriously the nicest (and smartest) group of people I've ever met.7 points -
I wanted a hot stuff devil/aloha monkey mash-up, and that's exactly what I got! Danny Reed put this on me yesterday at Hot Stuff Tattoo in Asheville, NC. Awesome guy, and a very cool shop. I waited till he put it on IG.7 points

@dcostello Totally admirable reason for not making it, I hope your girlfriend recovers soon! @chrisnoluck Those came out so rad!! We shall see you next time :) And everyone else who made it, you guys are so awesome! I had a great time sharing a meal with all of you, it was really cool to see your faces and all of those fantastic tattoos I've been 'liking' over the last few months. Such a rad group of people, can't wait to see y'all again at the State of Grace convention next month.4 points -

Why is @ian so grumpy looking? Did he just get his ass tattooed or something?3 points -
@petes67bird you made the right choice! I think that bare spot is big enough for a small piece. maybe a little traditional rose/dagger, a snake, or pick some awesome flash off the wall at Great Lakes. Also don't rush to add the filler, i think you have a few areas that are perfect for fun little "mini tats". When do you go back for color? looking forward to seeing it finished!3 points

I was in a kebab shop not long ago with my mate and this smartass drunk kid and his friends came in and he came straight up to me and told me the tattoo on my thumb was shit(which it is but that's not the point) anyway it ended in him and his friends getting a bit of a hiding and a lecture on abusing people they don't know, I just don't get some people and their thought process. Also @Genie of the West I definitely agree3 points

Likewise, buddy! You're a part of that radness, for sure. It was great to finally put a face to your screen name (and awesome tattoos) and get to know you a bit. And @dcostello, I hope all's well, man. I was looking forward to seeing you, but you made the right choice. Here's a fast heal.2 points

Pre and post-tattoo rituals
Mark Bee and one other reacted to slayer9019 for a topic
^^ This...worse feeling ever! My ritual is serious now, as I have worked out the "kinks" that can ruin my day (well more than getting my knee drilled with a needle for a few hours haha). Shit, shower, shave, as close to the time before me leaving as possible. Fill my two nalgene 1L bottles with ice and water, begin hydration. Start the long drive into NYC, and park in the same parking deck (no need for street parking tickets, assholes want $150 a pop). Walk to burger joint, get massive burger and fries. Go to favorite bar. At bar immediately bartender(s) ask me what I am getting worked on today. Drink 2-3 tasty beers. Walk to shop, smoke a cig on the way. Use bathroom before because nobody likes to stop mid-tattoo. Afterwards, get in car light up a premium cigar (currently working on a case of Rocky Patel Vintage 1992s). After I get home shower forever then get a nice scotch and look at new tattoo. Literally nothing ever changes, and it works out perfect. Also not drinking any alcohol the day prior makes a massive difference!2 points -
Definitely plan on it. I'm doing field research on jailhouse tattoos for the next eight months, but as soon as possible, I'll be there! The scope and quality of the work offered is, as we used to say, a trip.2 points

My wife and I both got tattooed by Capilli Tupou today. First off, he is one of THE nicest tattooers I've ever met. Just an incredibly good guy. My wife got her knee cap and I got the back of my knee done. Because, you know, we complete each other. Hers: His:2 points

Most of my sessions have been 4-5 hours on average, nothing shorter than 4 hours. Several times I've sat 8-9 hours, mostly with Henning. We try to squeeze in as much work as possible when he's visiting. My first tattoo was with Henning and the entire experience was an all day event. Walk to subway, subway to LIRR, LIRR out to LI, cab from LIRR to Kings Ave. That's about 1 1/2 to 2 hours travel time already. Arrive 12-12:30PM. Other than email communications, hadn't seen Henning since the first time I met him in about 1 1/2 to 2 years earlier. Short conversation, Henning begins to stencil me and draw, which takes about 45 minutes. Then we get to business. Couple of bathroom breaks, a 30 minute break for lunch, then back at it. Henning would ask how I'm doing and I tell him I'm fine. Do you want to keep going? Sure (with no frame of reference). By the time all was said and done, it's about 8:30PM. I literally get home about 10:30-11PM.1 point

Horitomo is amazing, but has a very different style than Shige. I think for tattooers like Shige in the US you can't go wrong with Jeff Gogue. But honestly, I wouldn't attempt to get a sleeve while working on minimum wage. You're looking at a financial commitment of multiple thousands of dollars. Finish your schooling, get a job that pays better, and then start seriously looking into it.1 point

Just saw this posted on Facebook... talked my dad into a little hand poked heart on his forearm at the end of the night. Don't have any good finished photos, though. I'll try to get one sometime that's in focus and such. His last hand poked tattoo was in the military in the late '70s or early '80s... it was one you had to earn through some sort of actions, of which he's only ever told me part of the story. And even that bit was pretty rough, so I'm unsure if he'll ever tell me the rest.1 point -
@Dan S stay safe.. Please let us know your research went well and get a tattoo when your done.1 point

I mean, I have the back of both knees done. Even with a beer to take the edge off, that was still no picnic. I feel like after 8 toes, both feet, most of both legs, the front of my torso, the entirety of both arms, one hand, all knuckles, and smatterings on various places around my neck, I've gotten the gist of the "pain" part of it. While I do have a handful of less-than-stellar tattoos, I'd say the majority of mine are "good" at the very least. Now, my last roommate would swallow a few Vicodin, drink some concoction of "anti-energy drinks" he'd make and go to sleep until they were done. Most of the folks at Blackheart and Temple have worked on him, so I'd say he has some decent work as well. But, who knows? Carry on.1 point -
