  4. Tattooed by a guy called Steve in Bath around 1970. Don't know what became of him. He gave me two great tattoos though. Got tattooed by Doc Price in Plymouth. He was 80 and has been tattooing since the 1940s, amazing guy and some great tales. I first saw one of his tattoos when I was in Approved School (Reform School) in the 1970s. It took 40 years but I got there. I've a great big framed picture of me and Doc that takes pride of place on the wall in my house. I've also got a Bristol Tattoo Club bat tattooed by Jimmie Skuse (Les Skuses grandson). Jimmie has been tattooing for a few years I'm not sure if Jimmie has been tattooing since 1985 but the family lineage dates back to the 1940s. Alex Binnie did his version of my first ever tattoo a couple of years ago. He is such an important person in British tattooing history. At the London tattoo convention I'm getting tattooed by Henning and in October, on my birthday, by Lal Hardy. George Bone is also on my list.

It's always funny when Skrewdriver gets brought up. Well, not really FUNNY per se, but it's one of those 'get out the popcorn, kick your feet up and watch it unfold'. Usually it starts with 'well, their first album was ok' (which we've already gotten) and at some point a devil's advocate will point out that it's ok to listen to NWA but not Skrewdriver and isn't that equally blah blah blah. Oh look. My popcorn is ready. :D

skrewdriver's first is punkrock, and actually pretty good...but being european and being harassed and gotten into fights with neo-nazis pretty much my whole life I say fuck that band and their followers.

  7. I like that he can appreciate all styles even tho he is a traditional tattooer. He has been getting a lot of attention lately and well deserved of course, It just goes to show there is no room for rock stars in the industry when you have super talented guys like Capilli who are so humble and thankful for what they do.

My wife and I both got tattooed by Capilli Tupou today. First off, he is one of THE nicest tattooers I've ever met. Just an incredibly good guy. My wife got her knee cap and I got the back of my knee done. Because, you know, we complete each other. Hers: His:

  11. Grrrrroooaaan... What exactly do you mean by "special" and "not wrong"?! I'm planning my next tattoos to be on both my feet. You two scare me given all the tattoo experiences you've had. Mind you absolutely wonderful ones at that! Knock on wood, I'm hoping for Horitomo cats. Just praying, sacrificing the neighbor's goats, reading some KFC chicken bone messages and sorta patiently waiting for that special phone call asking when I'd be able to set up an appointment. Fingers crossed.

  16. I'm leaving my academic teaching gig to take a job as a scientific illustrator for an excavation in Brazil next year. I get to do art for a living for a little while, and I am so fucking stoked. I'm also taking a printmaking class this semester, and it's the most fun I've had in any class, ever. Not sure why I love this really hard, really time-consuming process, but it turns out I think lithography is the shit.

    Hello All!

Wanted to thank Ian for the invite to the LST community. My name is Mike and from Yonkers, NY. Really into traditional Japanese tattooing and tattoo history/culture. I originally started getting tattooed in Okinawa Japan when I was stationed there in the late 90's. Waited 14 years before I got tattooed again. Last year I commission Rodrigo Melo of Northstar tattoo to start my suit. Amazing artist who has a good appreciation for use of sumi. We completed both 3/4 sleeves and chest panels earlier this year and started this past weekend on my back. Looking forward to being part of the community Mike

  20. Every tattoo will appear darker, for 2-20 days post treatment, the initial fading won't be noticeable until 3-6 weeks. If you're tech or doctor isn't taking photos at every treatment, I strongly encourage you to. My clients are always, "yea it's looking good" then I do a quick photoshop comparison and their reply is WOW!

to make it more interesting, let's replace nwa with sledgehammer or any of the sss japanese rac bands? haha on a side note, what about david alan coe? I imagine folks aren't playing his underground album but the other stuff gets played. which i'll mention too that his first album, penitentiary blues, is a great blues record.

Agreed. He was playing Blind Willie McTell when I got tattooed by him. Shaved me with a straight razor too, only time that's ever happened when I got tattooed. Pretty much everything about getting tattooed by Bob Roberts rules.

    Hola from Vancity

Thank you! Most of my tattoos were done by the amazing Chris Hold at Sacred Heart Tattoo here in Vancouver, the little panther was done by Matt Mitchell at Granville Street Tattoos, it was a Friday the 13th flash piece I got on a whim on Friday for $31!

  28. Colors will be darker initially. The real fading won't take place until your body starts to absorb the ink. Mine took 2-3 weeks before it started showing up and 6-8 weeks to be "finished" from that particular session. Avoid infection? Don't mess with it, let the blisters pop on their own. Keep it covered and wash it a couple of times/day. I covered mine with non-stick gauze until the blisters dried up.

  29. Saying you want a certain shading technique vs just saying you want a traditional tattoo are two different things. I was using the needle grouping example to try to illustrate that point. Also I have always contended that the best advice someone can give on the internet about tattooing, is get off the internet and go into a reputable tattoo shop. I didn't learn what I know just hanging out in tattoo forums it required some in real life trial and error at real tattoo shops. There is no book or iphone app that will make you a savvy tattoo customer and 99% of what's on the internet is misinformation.
    1 point
  30. Why? Because in tattooing the customer usually isn't right. Because tattooing isn't the sort of democratic activity where you have an equal say to somebody who has spent years or decades constantly working at his or her craft because you read something on the internet.

I know a couple other of you are in Oslo besides @Iwar and just in case you wanna go out and listen to some music on Wednesday night the 18th, my good buddy Jon DeRosa is playing a set at Mir(?). He does really awesome croony tunes, kind of ethereal and kind of lounge-y. He's also an all-around rad dude and has some great tattoos! Jon DeRosa

Yeah, man! One of the best dudes ever, for sure. We got there around noon and didn't leave until close to 6. Total pleasure spending the day with him. I pulled up your Instagram account and said, "So your boss did this guy's back?" He lit up! "How do you know Mike? He's got an incredible collection." He also said that, amazing as the photos are, your back has to be seen to be believed. The gray veil over the face, in particular. One thing that we thought was funny: he kept apologizing to my wife because he felt bad for tattooing a woman's knee. She's tough as nails and sat like a rock, but he still kept saying, "Sorry, sorry." Then when he started on me, he said, "I'm not apologizin' to you, mate. I'm just gonna go!" Haha. He was super efficient. - - - Updated - - - He's gonna be in LA at Captured, then in New York for a few weeks, then back in the Bay. Flights from Portland to SF are about $200. Signed, Your enabler

  34. No name kitty. Terrible picture but she's still roaming everywhere and hasn't been still since we got back. Can't really see her face..she has bright yellow eyes. Now we have three Tortie kitties. All because of Bella Jo, our original tortie. So, we have Britta Rose, who is 11.5, Clementine Isabelle that I got from this same shelter last November, and then this new one with no name yet. (we also have a grey and white cat named Opilio) Seuss Mirabel Goose Mirabel Oleander Mirabel (would call her Ole) I also thought about Seuss Goose b/c then it rhymes like Dr. Seuss. I considered Turtle, but then I'm sure we'd just call her Turtle head and I don't want that! Husband wants Goose.

  39. You can never go wrong with a dragon back piece! I too am going full back and pretty much gave Chris freedom over it with the guideline of to go dark. I told him my interests were deities, demons, malevolent creatures and that it would cool if it came from Japanese folklore. In the end though it's going to be whatever he comes up with. Start in January 2015 with a session every month except for June, July, August and September with the same scheduling for 2016 till completion.
    1 point
  40. I think I am just a tiny bit excited about it hahaha Full back, neck to knees. It is going to be Japanese and I think I want a dragon to be included but I basically plan on giving Mike 100% freedom with it. Do you have any idea what your O'Donnell backpiece is going to be?

  44. Here comes another of my "Out of the Norm" submissions. This tattoo was done on the 1st September and is still driving me crazy. (My legs heal terribly). As usual, something different to the norm around these parts. Based on the Constructivism propaganda posters designed mainly in the early 20th Century and done by Gray Silva of Rampant Ink Nottingham @ Teesside Charity Tattoo Show, in about 5 hours, at a guess.
