    Tattooing!

I've hesitated to chime in because it's counter productive to what LST is for. But homeboy shouldn''t even be picking up a machine yet unless it's to break it down and clean it. Now, back to talking about how awesome Mike Roper is.

  8. For people that have already tattooed me, I would choose Ashley Howell, because he is one of my best friends, probably the smartest guy I know, but has no formal education, can tattoo any style, has tattooed all over the world, and we can get a beer afterwards. If he was off the table, I would have to say Matt Arriola, or Steve Byrne would be my choices because they are versatile as well, like everything they do and they create the type of tattoo experience I am looking for.

A older gentleman came into the shop to cover up some 1980s Danny Fowler tattoos the other day. It was a skull and wizard, and I was like "NOOOOOO, don't do it!" His wife was like, "He's gonna!"

  11. Here is a nice piece from @Stewart Robson . I had an appointment with him yesterday and that morning my wife said she wanted to get a tattoo. We ran into Stewart on the way into the shop and informed him that we were going to do a walk-in with whomever my be available. He told her that he would do the tattoo. She was a little nervous as this was her first real tattoo. In fact Stewart said to my wife "you look terrified" to which she responded "YES!". So being that she is very comfortable with Stewart, she was VERY HAPPY he offered! This was a cover up of a tattoo that she received when she was 19. - - - Updated - - - Here is the latest on my back. @Stewart Robson really killed it!!!! One more session and this chapter is closed.

  12. Hahaha, thank you so much, @Graeme! It was so painful to do that big thing in just one go, and nothing I will recommend. We were starting at 4.40 PM and I was done 11.15 PM I think. We had a lot of breaks eating a little and drinking coffee. So Tattootime was maybe five and half hours? The worst part was when Marius dried and washed the tattoo before this picture was taken. Haha, maybe @Iwar can describe it a little better? Omg

    Tattooing!

Ah for sure, my bad! Well shoot, thanks for clarifying. I hate having dumb beef with people, especially in a setting as chill as LST. I dunno if you guys have read TCM #2 yet, but when Hooper was talking about primitive tattoos and how warriors would see their opponents charge out of the jungle with these large black pieces and go "oh fuck!" Well that's our hoard, no doubt B) - - - Updated - - - Can I see some of your art unrelated to tattoo art? pig skin is very different from people skin, but it does help you get used to having a machine in your hand.

I was not saying anything meant to be taken in a demeaning manner. I was making an observation that, in the short while I have seen you post here, that you always seem to actually make sense and take the time to form a complete and whole thought. Even when speaking to people who obviously don't deserve it, you make a solid response. I was trying to compliment you man. @Graeme Our barbarian horde can be covered in tattoos and metal as fuck, right?

This one came into our shop in San Antonio the other day. Said it was done in Connecticut around 1985. Could not remember the shop name or tattooer's name. Also... Have you guys checked out @vintage_tattoos on Instagram? It's run by 2 english dudes so there's a lot of english stuff but if you tag them in an old tattoo they repost it. It's pretty bitchin' - - - Updated - - - Don't know why that uploaded sideways... Oh well. - - - Updated - - - Met this guy outside of my old apartment here in San Antonio... 20. If you could only be tattooed by one tattoo artist for the rest of your life... who would it be? Explanation is required. Shop talk, personal conversations and general work done plays a huge role in every experience and hopefully we will get some good stories out of this. (I haven't posted on here in a while, so I hope this didn't get brought up somewhere else.) It was a hard choice, but I know that if I could be tattooed by anyone else for the rest of my life... It would be Freddy. 1. I'm lazy and its a 1 mile walk to Temple 2. He is hilarious 3. I could hear him talk about India all day. 4. Jason, Derrick and Heath are awesome to talk to as well. 5. The shop is beautiful. 6. Every time I go in, I just want to get a million jesus tattoos. Your turn.

    Who are you?

Hi everybody! I really like this thread :) Well i am Nick And i live in Belgium, i am now 33 yrs old and before my 27 i had never thought of tattoos or ofcourse being a tattoo artist :) I studied nursery in 1998 but for me that was more being in the bar in front then actually in my courses because i guess it wasn't the correct choice for me. Then i started out in arts (illustrating) i spend 5 yrs there in stead of 4 because i couldn't draw for s**t. Then i met the nefew of my best friend who was creating shockwave games. That was so cool that spend 4 yrs in the game industry. After that i went independant but i thought i wasn' t good enough. Which brings me to the best choice EVER in my life, Return to school to study Digital arts and entertainment in Belgium where i really learned how to draw and to do some cool 3D stuff, programming, etc, Basicly everything that has to do with games and film industry. After i finished my studies over there they really wanted to keep me there for my drawing skills so to fill my financial gap i agreed with their proposal and went teaching. A big suprice to stand in front of 320 hungry students :) This i did for 3 yrs now. In my first yr teaching i had a demand from a tattoo artist to teach him more how to draw correctly and so i did. This was Rouslan Toumaniantz, a very serious and ambitious tattoo artist who was held back a bit by the girl with the stars on her face. After 2 lessons he told me i could draw quite nicely and he asked me if I wasn' t interested in learning how to tattoo. Like i said before, i have NEVER tought about tattoos so that was kinda new for me... I my eyes tattoos where oldschool or ugly drawings. (sorry for this but i didn't knew any better) SO he showed me some work of Dimitryi Samohin, Jesse Smith, Anil Gupta, Jack Ribeiro, and many many others... This got me really interested in the world of tattooing and inspired me to try to tattoo for myself. At this point i am stopping to teach and going full time tattoo artist. I must say for all the media i touched like aquarel, oil paint, photoshop, etc, Tattooing is BY FAR the most challenging media to put art... I have my shop somewhere in Doornik Belgium atm, But i' m really dreaming one day to come to the states and work there together with my girlfriend who is doing now Animschool and her dream is to be animator in Pixar. So one day: San fransisco here we come :) :D (I really dont know if it would be possible but we can dream right ;) )

  33. Well seeing how I've only been tattooed by one person so far, and I'm about 40-50% there, should I continue to get more, I might as well go all in. Jill Bonny. She's not as flashy as some but that's what I like about her work. It's solid and detailed just enough without going overboard with excess. It retains a bold look and has a style that I feel relates to the flatness of the old prints. I really like that about her work. And she's cool too. Also once upon a time when you get briefly introduced to Tim Hendricks and he sees your tattoos (and finds out it's all been done by Jill), then tells you, " You're a tattoo artist's dream client.", well you should probably listen to those words and follow through. If I cloned myself or had a twin. Horitomo.

  35. In my case at little rearranging not complete blank canvas! Regino is crazy good at huge japanese tattoos! Maybe if i ever do a back piece i'll have him do it!
    1 point
  36. If it was just on who's work you like the best at this time,I would also say Seth Wood.I love his style. And I love Regino Gonzales Japanese work,& b&g work.I wish I could start over with a blank canvas,I would like to get a bodysuit from these two guys.
    1 point
  37. If I were to stick to just one, it would only be if I were doing a full Japanese bodysuit. That being said, it would be a very difficult choice between Stewart Robson, Mike Rubendall, and Horitomo... I'll say Stewart, though. Once my front is finished and my back is at least outlined, I plan on having Stewart and Mike each do a leg from thigh to knee, so I hope to have at least have a good chunk of tattooing from each of them.

  38. I would say Chris Garver! The reason is I like japanese style tattoos but also other styles as well. There are very few artist that can do many styles at the level he does. Well rounded is an understatement!! Being that he was on t.v and all many people may say some negative things but you cannot dispute how awesome of an artist he is not just as a tattooer. He's very personable and friendly! Also I found him to be super humble about his success.

  39. This is tricky. I love all of the work I've gotten by the various artists, but I'm not sure I would stick with only one per se... If I had to choose I would have to say Grez, only because he is so versatile, clean, and a good dude. And I would hate to go anywhere but Kings Ave if I had to choose. A close second would be Seth Wood, but since I haven't gotten any work by him yet I would be hesitant in making that commitment. And like @CultExciter said, so glad I don't have to choose one! That would take the joy out of collecting tattoos for me, to be perfectly honest!

  40. I dream about being tattooed by Shige, Horitomo, any of the Horitoshi family, Wendy Pham and a whole slew of other artists. But I am very happy with the tattoo artist who started me on my journey, Henning Jorgensen. He's introduced me to a world of great artists who are as genuine and humble as he is. He's given me beautiful artwork that I'll treasure for a lifetime and just an awesome guy to chat with about life in general. Henning loves tattooing and that's something that I admire about him, his passion for his work. Mike Rubendall is the same way, hence why he and Henning are such good friends. Same minds gravitate to one another. I'm lucky to have work from both and will continue that trend.

  46. Topping this thread for a new myth I heard last week. I just started getting acupuncture done, and I was chatting with my acupuncturist about my tattoos when she mentioned that they generally avoid putting needles anywhere where there is coloured ink. (Ironic!) I was like, "really?" and she admitted that there is no evidence whatsoever that there was any danger of performing acupuncture on tattooed skin, and she thought it was kind of stupid too, but that people just followed this rule to be safe. Has anyone else heard this? This came on the heels of a really dumb inflammatory article in a shitty newspaper here in Montreal that talked about how dangerous it is for women with lower back tattoos to get epidurals. I find this medical hysteria with no actual evidence very strange.

  49. This tattoo was done on my boss Ross Ferrie by Pinky Yun in 1982. Ross always tells this story of getting this dragon along with many others of Pinky. Pinky basically dipped a toothipick in some black ink gave himself a few reference points and just started tattooing on his arm. Ross admits he wasn't so sure at the time but the end result turned out. The other photo is Ross and Pinky in 1982 and a painting our friend Ashley did for Ross shortly after Pinky's death. Note Ashley painted this while in New Zealand only from what he remembered it looking like.
