  2. So today's Father's Day and my dad is celebrating the only way he knows best...by spending the day at the mah-jong parlor. My lady is working so that leaves me with a free day to my own devices to which I decided to mount and hang up the Horitomo cat prints I have accumulated. I love the entire series and the various ones that are not in print but posted on Horitomo's Instagram. Patiently waiting for more prints to come out and the much rumored book that collects all of the various tattoo cat incarnations. Hopefully one day I make it out to the west coast to get a tattoo cat from him...would be an awesome experience.

  4. After five months or so of getting tattooed at a more or less sane pace, this month I seem to be returning to full-on insanity. Filled in the gaps on my chest with a pair of butterflies yesterday by Robert Ryan--I really love my tattoos from him, and I love going out to Electric, even if it means braving New Jersey transit.

  7. This is my take on it, I use them occasionally and I'll say that the tattoo still hurts like a mofo, you're just in a more relaxed state to deal with the pain. If it's going to make it a little easier for me and much easier for my tattooer, I'm all for it. As far as earning my tattoos, I've got plenty a sober tattoo in some painful areas so as far as I'm concerned, i've earned the right to get tattooed how I damn please.

  8. Directly from that article - - "the simple fact that an uncreative person took a creative person’s work, signed their name to it, and passed it off as their own for their personal glorification, monetary benefit and career advancement. There’s no wiggle room there. Even the thieves know that, better than the dullards who are rationalizing and defending them." Absolutely perfect. That article is brilliant.

Looking forward to completing my Half Sleeve w/Chest Panel by O'Donnell on July 11th. After that, I have an appointment with Koeplinger July 24th at Smith St for my first traditional tattoo, a wolf head, which will be done on the top of the foot. Really excited about that piece! I'm also waiting to hear back from Henning to do a half sleeve w/chest panel whenever he is available at King's Ave. He will be up this fall but is not sure what his schedule will be like or how booked he is. Last but certainly not least, I am on Rubendall's priority list for his next booking which will be for 2016 all because I was too lazy to drive out to Massapequa after a graveyard shift at work. Looking to get him to do a piece on my ribs for what I am saying will be my final tattoo...... but we all know how that goes.

  15. Speed varies from artist to artist, and that includes artists who work by tebori. Horitomo's tebori technique is as fast and even faster than some artists' machine work, and I know that Horiyoshi III is considered one of the fastest tattooers around. I also understand that he works primarily by machine these days.

  16. I don't condone copying people's tattoos, but I am not really digging this thread. One it's not really any of my business to call out people for this kind of thing. Second, I would be hesistant to do so, because there is so much reference material outside of tattoo realm, that I couldn't be sure that two people weren't copying a piece of art from another genre as a tattoo. Third I have never gotten a tattoo that I expected to be or thought in any shape or form would be custom. I like running into people that have the same tattoos I do, I like the look of traditional tattoos and I am under no delusion that I am somehow "special" despite what my mother told me. I don't worry when someone tells me they are going to draw something for me, and they really just go trace it from the Ed hardy flash book and pass it off as their own, because I know most people aren't familiar with the design. Even is someone does copy the tattoo you have, it doesn't change the fact that you have a badass tattoo that most people would be jealous of and want to wear and you will get no sympathy from me, in fact i might make fun of you for complaining about it.

  17. The Family Business posted this tattoo by Chisaki on instagram today: I thought it looked familiar because I've seen nearly the same tattoo done by Tomas Tomas. I found this picture of it on the internet, but it was also published in Marisa Kakoulas's book Tattoo World: Pretty messed up, in my opinion.

  18. I was booked for a huge rib piece that I unfortunately had to put off because I didn't have the finances to do it and my sleeve simultaneously but the artist recommended taking a muscle relaxant before sessions I think not so much for pain management, but more to counter the body's natural impulse to tense up. And yeah, if that's going to help me to sit and will allow the tattooer to do a better job and result in a better tattoo, then I'm all for it.

I lost my younger brother (Dumbass OD'd) 6 years ago. I would like to have a tattoo in the American Traditional Style. Perhaps a dagger through a heart with banner(s) reading "My Little Brother My Best Friend" in Spanish. My Google-Fu says the translation is "Mi Hermanito - Mi Mejor Amigo" Can anyone confirm? I want it in Spanish as my brother was perpetually pissed off that since he lived in L.A., he was expected to understand Spanish. It's a Brother Thing, you get it or you don't. lol Perhaps use this flash as a starting point? Any help and or any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks, ~ Alan

    Hello Sailor!

Hi, I've been a tattoo enthusiast for a few years now and I've thoroughly enjoyed watching the artist interviews on this site so thought I'd finally sign up to the forum. I'm a big fan of Japanese tattooing and have 2 three quarter sleeves done by Diego Azaldegui in Leeds UK. I'm currently deciding on what I want for my back piece and hoping to get started on that soon.

  22. Happy fathers day to you bud. My kids got me "Vader..#1 Dad" shirt, which I am sporting proudly as I tend to my boy who is feeling under the weather. On a random note, I found this on the interwebz, unfortunately I can't find out who the artist was to credit him.

I told myself no more tattoos for the rest of the year. So far, the tattoo gods are laughing at me slash torturing me because there have been so many amazing guest artists coming through (Hundahl, BHR, Boltz, Byrne, CAPILLI, etc.), plus I missed the Stell benefit, plus I'll be missing some Friday the 13th action... sigh. It most certainly doesn't help that I frequent this messageboard and still follow tons of tattooers and tattoo enthusiasts on the IG. Right now, the plan is to get tattooed on 1/1/14. I hope one of my shops will be open. I'm thinking of going in later in the day, because I don't want to catch an artist too hungover from New Year's Day festivities.

  33. I really hope that nobody opens the copyright can of worms onto tattooing... imagine all of the published reference images or commercial imagery that's used in tattoos. Even if the suit is between two artists, I feel like it would set a precedent for larger entities to totally shit on the tattoo community.

  34. Yea agreed. The 90's BM sound in my opinion should really stay in the 90's. The super lo-fi, blast-beat, tremolo stuff that people like Darkthone put out has been a bit played out. That's why I'm glad bands like the above are expanding the sub-genre a bit. Good post! Now for me to post up some tunes.

  36. It's really hard not to say anything on these intro threads when a new tattoo artist joins, and is basically a scratcher like the op, or like others on here, when they have been tattooing for a while but they still suck ass and then go around advising others or posting when their work is at scratcher level.

  37. . those shots were not so much about the tattoos, but was about the process of being tattooed :) . here are some shots from about 6 weeks ago shortly after some work on the ankle bands & iron cross so they are still healing & not touched up yet, these shots don't include the additional clouds work I got this week, as you can see, except for the niner piece,it's all "island/Polynesian" themed. . . . . . . . I know they are not "world class by world class artists" but they're mine & I like 'em.

  38. I've only used painkillers to get tattooed on one occasion, and pretty much what I noticed is that they don't take the pain away, but rather, make you not care that it hurts. Like the painful sensation is still there and feels the same, minus that it sucks. I'm probably going to use them for my back if I can't handle it straight. I must say, I do romanticize the idea of hurting for your tattoos.

  39. in about 10 days my girlfriend and I will hitchike up north to visit @Johannes again in Gothenburg. So im pretty stoked for that! We also made plans for later in the summer to hitchhike from Budapest in Hungary through Czech, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania to the northern part of Estonia and back to Germany from there. What's also pretty sweet is that I found a way to embed a paypal donate button on my hitchiker facebook page so I hope that will generate a little bit of extra income for on the road. All and all im really excited for the next few months!

  40. I just got around to watching the Kore Flatmo interview. He had some comments on "pain management" that reminded me of recent comments on this thread. He was talking about the benefits of pain killers and how they are going to become more available in the future: "...When I’m doing a pinup on a guy’s ribs, I don’t want him to move, and if he’s moving that’s going to be a problem. So for this guy, he manages the pain and it allows him to get bigger and better tattoos. And of course the first argument made is, 'well that’s not pure, tattoos need to hurt.' Anyone who makes that argument--they don’t have to use the pain killer. I’ll tattoo ‘em straight up. Right? They don’t have to worry about the other guy’s tattoo. They can worry about their own."

  41. I think my ridiculous run of tattooing is at an end. After months and months of getting work done, I am getting very close to my wedding and my attention must surely turn towards this most important day. My love would like very much if I wasn't taped up, or wounded, or healing as we head into the home stretch. I am certain she is right. So, I had a couple of little filler tattoos done to largely finish up my right arm sleeve. Look for the dice and the flower above them. It has been a great experience, made all the better by being able to share my tattooing with the great folks here at LST. But, come August, work begins on my collar.

Haha I was kidding about the bleeding together thing although I admit it is kind of awesome going through all this together. And surprising @Graeme with his Ron bear was the most fun thing ever. When he realized what was happening he smiled wider than I think he did on our wedding day. Omg Graeme just aquaphored my back. I take back anything nice I've ever said about him. Fuck that guy.
