Terrible pictures, but finally got some color on my koi sleeve from Rodrigo Melo out of Northstar tattoo (NYC). Opted for a black koi with yellow and red highlights, the other koi on my shoulder will be similar. Also got this a couple months ago from Kyle Sajban out of Red Rocket Tattoo (NYC). I may very well get my back piece from Adam Hays from Red Rocket. He did two AMAZING back pieces at a recent convention (well atleast the outline) and his style is amazing. adamguyhays is his IG, and within his last 20 pictures has the back pieces im talking about (dragon and tiger).10 points -

Dropping the Bomb, how your parents found out about your first tattoo!

My Mom has known that I've gotten "a few" new tattoos recently, but yesterday at my sister's graduation the legs made their first public debut. My Mom's jaw dropped when she first saw them!! She asked a lot of questions the big one was "are you going to get more?!?!" Later, my husband asked "What did your Mom think?" I told him that I thought she'd been a little bit horrified - my brother piped in from across the table "A whole bunch of other people's mom's were horrified too!!" LOL!! My Mom eventually said she thought they were "nice" and "colorful"... which I think means that she kinda hates the tattoos but loves me anyway.6 points -

By coincidence, I have just moved cities to Canberra and realised that I am now living around the corner - literally 2 streets away - from the site where I started collecting my very first proper tattoos in 1996. So I've always travelled to get tattoos. Back in '96 I travelled from Sydney to Canberra (280km) to get tattooed by a dear friend who was apprenticing with a really great artist called Ex de Medici who's now pretty much stopped tattooing and I think is working on her amazing paintings. For the last few years I've been travelling from Aus to Switzerland to get tattooed by Filip Leu & Sabine Gaffron, an incredible experience. Filip is starting my backpiece this year and even though it's super stressful getting all this money together to do it, once I am there and we start working it all feels worth it. The advantage also is that he tattoos faster than lightning, and has a very unique approach to large scale work. I've given him a few key elements I'd like and the coverage and I don't think he'll plan & draw the design until our first outlining session! And that's usually with visiting tattooers watching, asking him questions and hanging off his every word. Don't ask me how he does it but it really is watching genius in action. That said though, the first time I took a regular train and then a little 2 car mountain electric "train" up to the tiny mountain village where the Leu Family studio now is, I was laughing all the way up at where I was travelling to to get a damn tattoo!2 points

Relationships and tattoos
gougetheeyes reacted to Old Rose Tattoo for a topic
This is a great thread. When I first started getting tattooed I wasnt into gals that had tattoos on their arms or really anywhere visible. Then when I started getting more tattoos women with more tattoos started to grow on me. Then when i decided I was going to be a tattooer and I fully sumerged myself into the whole culture I then started to find women heavily tattooed far more attractive than woman without. I think it is mostly like everyone has been saying that an untattooed woman wouldnt quite grasp how big of a part the world of tattooing is in my life. If they couldnt share the same passion then it would be really hard to find other things in common. Especially being a tattooer myself, most of the women I meet now days are in tattoo shops or at conventions. Luckily for me my old lady loves tattoos and the culture. I met her when she came in to get a tattoo re-worked. When we met almost a year ago she only had 5 tattoos. She now is almost complete with one sleeve and her back piece is drawn up. She had always loved tattoos but was affraid she wouldnt be able to find a guy that would accept her for her tattoos. Then when she met me she realized that i would love her with her tattoos and she went for it!1 point -

Another NY Times Article: Tattooing Transition from Cult to Fine Art
TrixieFaux reacted to Graeme for a topic
My short response is that tattooing doesn't need validation from the New York Times or the art world. My longer response is that is anything interesting at all being said here? It's obvious that the person who wrote the article did essentially no research at all into tattooing or the history of tattooing and how it intersects or not with fine art. I mean, she writes about some jagoff performance artist who made a video of him tattooing prostitutes for heroin money in 2000, but not Ed Hardy's 2000 Dragon Scroll that exhibited in a gallery the same year? Or how about the idea that tattoos are suddenly collectible now that the fine art world has taken a bit of a shine to them? Because there weren't tattoo collectors before? And that tattoo collecting isn't at all the same as fine art collecting for the simple fact that tattoos have no exchange value? That's just a start of what's wrong with the article.1 point -
