    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

Picture from Kore Flatmo's Facebook of our progress this week! Such an amazing experience, I'd recommend PluraBella to anyone and everyone here! Here's one I took to show how it matches up with my Kurt Wiscombe piece. I'm so pumped!

  2. Wait what is this and how do I get one? I take the greyhound 4 times a week! PS we had a nice quick visit to New York, which ended with being notified, during our drive home, that we got the dream apartment that we applied for on Monday! It is a fucking palace of an abode at an insanely reasonable price and it will finally be enough space for all our books, art and animals!!! There are so many rooms that I'll never have to talk to Graeme again!!! Party at our house!!!!!!!!!

    A nice story!

Thought I would post this as I am sure you all have seen it a million times. Looks ace now :) Scott Versago http://www.facebook.com/versago Quote, I got to tackle the official "#1 worst portrait tattoo in the world" today. I'm sure you've all seen it a million times online, as had I. I couldn't believe my eyes when this guy walked in and showed me this project. I think my jaw literally hit the floor. He went on to tell me the story behind the portrait; He had just married his beautiful wife and not even three months afterwards she was killed in a horrible house fire accident leaving him to raise their three children alone. Shortly after he went to a local tattoo studio to memorialize his wife and was left with this abomination. He later returned to that studio for one more session, thinking that perhaps "he had done something wrong in the healing of the tattoo" and they butchered it even more the second time. Finally, he drove all the way to my studio, Empire Ink, just to meet me and to see what his options were. Touched by his story, I gifted the entire project to him for free. Now he has closure and I have an amazing story to add to my portfolio!

  7. Really. 10 (even little) tattoos, each an image that would remind you in particular of your visit to that specific place. That's what will make you smile 10, 20, 30 or 40 years from now.

If people around you are judging you based on a little bit of tattoo peeking out from under a sleeve, then you're most definitely hanging with the wrong crowd.

    Lady Heads

Tony Nilsson at Blue Arms Tattoo in Oslo, Norway is doing incredible girl heads in my opinion. I just recently started paying attention to his work and it is very solid. I would definitely love to get a tattoo from this guy.

  13. like life, why dont you just let it happen, get a damn tattoo.....pre planned mementos seem very strange. It seems to miss the point to me. instead of forcing meaning into your tattoo, get tattooed , it will have meaning, especially when traveling.....

  14. Welcome to the board. I like the sentiment behind the tattoo, and I think you have some valid concerns about it, and I'd suggest that you rethink the idea and maybe instead of getting ten letters individually done on your travels, when not get ten tattoos instead? Kind of like how when you look at old pictures of sailors and their tattoos and how there's a story there if you know how to read them. There are so many great tattooers all around the world you could end up with a really amazing collection that will remind you of the places you've been and the things you've experienced there.

  15. So, to start, your tattoo is going to cost you, probably, like $1000, for one lousy word! Most decent shops have a minimum charge for tattoos, in the places I've sen in major cities, it typically runs about a hundred bux an hour. You will get charged that regardless, one letter or the entire dictionary. Add that to the drawbacks you list above, maybe think about getting "wanderlust" tattooed on you in whatever language you find the locals speaking...English, German, French, Liverpudlian, whatever. Pick a spot, maybe on the legs, since they motte you everywhere you travel, and make a band of the words? Just an idle thought.

Mine ends at the wrist. I was thinking of having it end a bit higher, but I thought fuck it, I'm well-established in a career where tattoos aren't an issue, and while there are going to be plenty of circumstances where I'll want to keep them covered, if my shirt rides up and shows a bit of my sleeve it really doesn't matter.

    forum is so slow!

Hi Rob You're right there was a big spike on the server just before you posted, but it's settled back down now. Good news is that we're upgrading the server hardware next week so we should be seeing an end to these occasional slow downs altogether. Thanks again to everybody for putting up with the occasional slowness, we do appreciate your patience, and we're working hard to resolve the issue. Cheers

  38. Mary Jane Haake is an amazing and beautiful lady that has been tattooing in Portland for 31 years, she apprenticed under Bert Grimm. Her work now mostly consists of reconstructive work on burn victims, breast cancer patients, wounded soldiers, which I personally think is a really cool thing to do. She kind of holds things together in Portland is the best way I can put it. She works as kind of a liaison to the health department , keeping us up to date on any new laws or restrictions. It seems like whenever you have an issue you can always call Mary Jane, and she is willing to listen and help. She throws a birthday party every year, with food, live bands, and such and I have been lucky enough to be able to tag alone with boss man a few times. It's always a great time and usually end up meeting some pretty legendary people in the tattoo world there. Here is a video of her talking about her career, Bert Grimm and tattooing penis and butt crack among other things. She is also the only person I know that uses a coil machine to tattoo to do cosmetic tattooing.

I wouldve felt compelled to stop them and fix it for them too, I wouldve had a breakdown/freakout if I witnessed that. I feel his pain. Yeah I was hoping what I said wasnt gonna be taken the wrong way.

Yes, and No... It's weird. One of those double edged things... I don't think Inkmasters is actually going to affect anyone that really loves this profession, and is good at it. I guess earlier in the thread I was super pollyanna and trying to do nothing but see the upside of things and rationalize it all, not sure why, I just support my friends. But I guess out of school habits, I like to look at the same things over and try to argue a case against it... It's a writing tool... We didn't just take part in it... this whole thing was filmed back in July, (that episode, and NO, Richard had no idea) He thought the kids would at least know how to put a tattoo on.... But when they were three hours into something and some of them didn't even have the outlines complete. It was heartbreaking, Richard doesn't have anxiety attacks, I do... but he had two, and freaked out wanting to fix each tattoo that he saw, because he felt morally compelled to give those vets good work in exchange for theirs. No he didn't have a real idea of what was actually up, even the casting agents were a bit dishonest, I mean it's their job to get people on the set that would make for an interesting dynamic... And they were looking to get a rise, but it only raised vomit. I completely threw a fit the last day they shot... I stayed at the 700.00 a nite hotel they put us up in. And smoked in the non smoking room. I was pissed off thinking if we have to stay and fix shit tattoos, and put off the clients in San Antonio that were at the convention already (tattooers who love and cherish this), and waiting... I was going to have a little breakdown and probably leave NYC for TX... To get everything for the show in SA ready. We had to fly into Austin pick our truck up, grab the rest of our booth setup from Tony's house drive down to SA setup all over again, on 5 hours sleep, and yeah, I can totally criticize it, I want to know the parts I like and didn't in an effort to change them maybe for the better later on, or at least have an objective standpoint on it... And I am not a big user of Facebook, or Twitter too much anymore, I felt like if any place was good to kinda let loose, and be open regarding our opinions, experiences around this, or any tattoo type of topic, I would rather post up here, I thought. Safe zone. The entire show isn't 100% fucked up, and just a portion. I have been involved in some fucked up stuff before, far worse on a couple moral standpoints. It's early on in the Tattoo TV thing, I guess I just would like to maybe contribute constructive criticism somewhere, cause I know a few people look at these threads, and maybe just maybe they would take a few of the hints dropped here. Not snide, just honest... The way it should be. - - - Updated - - - Sorry about the novel....

Great artists are typically self assured, competant, secure and therefore = devoid of drama. For the non-tattooed viewer this show is just a Jerry Springer freak show, and tattoos are just a vehicle for the drama. We who like the art are way in the minority on this issue.

As we watched this last night, and tried to avoid punching the TV in annoyance, I commented to @Graeme that the problem is that that grating-as-fuck moron Kay Kutta (sp? Who cares) is actually kind of right; he admits openly that it's a "game" and has little to do with who is actually skilled or talented. Only he is totally down with that reality, while the rest of us think it's depressing as hell. Luckily, we countered our being bummed out by that fucking traditional episode (the only highlight of which was watching Richard Stell try to murder people with his eyes) by watching the new tattoo age, which cleaned some of the dirt off.
