Latest tattoo lowdown.....
Kingdomhearts25 and 18 others reacted to Lori Todd for a topic
I don't think I posted this new one I picked up from Greg Christian at Chris Nuñez's new shop, Handcrafted Miami just after New Years: Super excited for South Florida to have this new shop, which is beautiful. They're bringing in a lot of big name guys, which we don't often get here. Chad Koeplinger visited a few weeks after I got the moth and I was kicking myself for not having the budget to get something. But, I did book in with Heath Nock for June. (Holy shit that is a long ways away!) Getting a gator head with a Florida banner.19 points -

Might as well. Greg Christian @ Handcrafted Miami More pix in the latest tattoo lowdown. It's hard to shoot photos of your arm yourself, haha.16 points -
This is healed up enough to get a reasonable picture of it, so here's the progress on my arm so far. We're about six hours in right now, and my next sitting is in a week and a half. Thomas Hooper did this. Obviously.8 points

Hey guys, I just joined the forum and figured I'd kick things off by posting my in progress back piece. Jason Kundell is doing the work, though things have slowed a bit since he moved from SF to Portland. Hope to wrap things up in the next year and then it's time to get back into shape!8 points

Getting tattooed by Ron Henry Wells today. Insanely excited. I THINK the partially drawn wolf head he put on IG this morning (part of a larger Pic Stitch-ed picture) is for me. We'll see. I also got a really gnarly reaper from Rich Smith from Thicker Than Water yesterday--once I can get a decent picture of the damn thing I'll post it in the "Latest Tattoo Lowdown" thread.5 points

Consult with Mo Coppoletta today in TFB for bringing down my left arm sleeve. It was good to see him, felt like I was going back to my tattoo collecting roots, because he was the first guy to do big work on me! The shop is still cool as ever. Roll on The first Friday in March so the work can begin...3 points -

There is a lot and I mean a lot more than what you said GSJoe. You can love art but you are not going to try and be Caravaggio! Where are you at GSJoe? Before you even started tattooing fruit you need to draw! When you are tired of drawing, draw some more! Draw and draw. Then go in to a tattoo shop and show those drawings. Go home and draw some more. You see where I am going here GSJoe? After all that drawing, you may, going back into that shop and show them your new drawings. If they like them than you will be taught how to draw! " You have to past the first grade before you can go to the second grade!" Peck2 points -
Can anyone tell me who the artist of flash this is?
missStark and one other reacted to David Flores for a topic
There's nothing wrong with bringing in a printed copy of this, shit it's flash if you got this exact tattoo I don't think there would be anything wrong with it, but if you have to redraw it anyway, might as well improve on it. I am sure whoever drew it was inspired by someone else's flash and drew his own version, and probably the person he copied it from did the same thing with someone else's flash. The design is old and classic and out there it's just a matter of people making it their own.2 points -
Being a south Florida boy (now in the frozen north.... Norway). I've always wanted to get something to represent FLA. A classic gator is a great idea and something I've toyed with. My only problem... my family are FSU fans. :p2 points

Would love to get something pretty sizeable from O'Donnell, time and travel expense kind of make it unlikely for the foreseeable future - really cool for all you guys! Just about to email Greg Christian about getting something while he's in London - maybe a dragon's head, I was going to get Chad to do one if I came up on the reserve list while he's at Frith Street but I figure that's unlikely and if I do I can always get him to smash something else out, could be an exciting month after all...2 points

Huck Spaulding R.I.P
slayer9019 and one other reacted to Infernum for a topic
This guy was a true pioneer in the tattoo industry. and even though there has been much bad talk about him making professorial equipment available to the general public many years ago- it does seem like quite a few of the best known artists world wide started their career thanks to him. and even tough I had a professional apprenticeship, my first machines and much of my equipment back then was all Spaulding brand, and of course the a to z book that I still have, and hope to pass along to my apprentice one day, just as I got it from the guy who taught me. I believe the dude on the left is Jason Ochoa. I worked that Sunday night at the bar and a dude was there with a Elm St. tattoo patch and we got talking and he said his name was Jason and he was doing a little spot over at Greenpoint Tattoo, which got us talking about the DeVita event -- and that he and Thom shared the same dragon back piece. Incredible! And a nice dude.2 points -

I think that American (or European) Japanese is a totally different thing than Japanese Japanese...I prefer the Americanised version of it, personally...but if you're thinking of getting a Japanese tattoo and are trying to decide between Horitomo and Rubendall, it just comes down to personal preference. Unless you want tebori.1 point

i was hanging out on sidewalk patios at this pizza joint and then this bar next door and thought it was out of the ordinary that so many people were sporting some a lot of really sick traditional work. i had no clue that right next door was fucking elm street. i didnt know that some of the artists there are really talented with japanese traditional as well. got to go in and talk to them a little about what i was looking for. their prices are pretty on par too which is cool.1 point

I'm in the process of moving currently. I flew out to SF to meet up with my girlfriend (got tattooed by Nick Rodin) and we rented a car and are spending two weeks driving up the coast on our way back to Vancouver. We drove by Scapegoat while in Portland so I stopped in to check it out and got tattooed the next day. It's been an amazing road trip so far and a great way to transition into life on the west coast.1 point

@ChrisvK as it sounds like you'll already be in the area, let me recommend going through Slovenia too! I hitchhiked a bunch in Europe in my late teens/early twenties, and it was by far the easiest place I ever did it, in addition to being a beautiful, beautiful country!1 point -
Well I have always just crossed germany by car, so this time I plan on taking my time exploring the neighboring country. After that I plan on going to Austria, Swiss and maybe Italy. Then see if I can go back north via the other side of Germany and stopping by in Berlin and chill there for a bit, and then hit up some mates I met last year while i was in Sweden in the summer. They invited me to go roadtripping with them through scandinavia. If I haven't got tired of living out of a backpack by then Ill probably cross the pond to meet up with some people i met in hostels who live in the UK. Then I'll probably return home, repack, get a new passport since mine expires in a year or so. I will either settle down in normal life again, or go crazy hitchhiking and see if i can reach Asia, but that is all many nights away from now ;). Just orderd my bivy, it arrives in 6 days and then I will take it for a test in the Dunes, about 10km away from my hometown. I'll be taking pictures and write an article on my blog about that when done. Thanks again for all the support and interest you guys show! You're amazing people and if any of you happen to live near the roads I will follow, by all means give me a shout and we can go for a beer or something1 point

@gronk, you're entitled to get any type of tattoo that you want. that is everyone's prerogative. but many of have found, some through personal mistake, or seeing others, and just living for several decades, that tattoos have trends just like anything else. a good majority of us here realize that, and we stick to traditional american, japanese, and black and grey tattoos because we know they will still be relevant 10-20-30-50-100 years from now. that's right, my rotting corpse will still have relevant tats!1 point -

So remember what I was saying about 2012 being the year of the male tattoo model?
Stax138 reacted to David Flores for a topic
I can't imagine having that many tattoos at age 22. I had no money when I was that age for one and I spent from 25-33 getting tattooed very regularly and have not run out of room, nor have i tattooed my face, hands, or neck. My prediction he will go the route of the reformed white supremacist and have it all removed by let's say age 28. Modeling career can only last so long and the popularity of tattoos fluctuates between generations, so I can imagine being a former tattoo model with no marketable skills be a very lucrative future. On the other hand I can't give the ladies a pass either. I think every third girl in Portland is a tattoo model or in beauty school, or a tattooed model in beauty school that does roller derby on the side. I don't know what the future brings for them either.1 point -
