    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

Here's my tiger. It's pretty gnarly looking right now. I wouldn't share it any place but here, but I know y'all will understand. Totally in love with the thing! And now I have one big cat on each leg - total protection from evil eh? Man! I'm so swollen!! Can't even fit my leg in most of my pants!!

  5. Ok Ill play .... mine is fairly interesting. My wife (of 10 years) has absolutely no tattoos, but she is the reason I have any idea what a nice tattoo looks like! As I said in another thread, I come from a small town. The only tattooers within 100 miles were shitty scratchers, so that was all I knew. I was always attracted to the idea of tattoos, and as a kid I would draw on my arms and stuff, but man, when I saw these shitty tattoos on my friends I just couldnt hang. When I moved to Austin, I met a couple of tattooers but they did black and grey stuff that I wasnt into, so I got a little kanji thing on my back and that was it for a while. Then I met my wife. She was good friends (grew up) with the Deep Ellum crowd in Dallas including some of the guys in punk bands and a couple of the dudes from Elm Street. Man, Holy Shit! These guys (and girls) were getting the most badass traditional tattoos ... totally covered. I couldnt believe how awesome this stuff looked. I mean, I had seen the flash sheets but no one in my hometown ever picked the cool stuff. And if they did, it was rendered very poorly. So, I asked those guys who I should see in Austin, and of course I have plenty of options. And then I started forming my own opinions and getting tattooed, slowly. So yeah. My completely untattooed wife, in a round about way, taught me about good tattoos!

  6. I finally enrolled as a PhD student. It's taken almost a decade just to be able to begin. I don't have an MA and went to art school, so I was told by the university I wanted, 'I'm sorry but it is simply our policy and without a good Master's degree you will not be considered.' I got depressed, then indignant, then pissed off. So I spent a month reading, focusing and writing a proposal and extra essays, sent it all in, and proved (mainly to myself) that I could do it. That felt pretty good.

  7. Well all i can say is weather you agreed with Huck as a business man or not he was a huge part of the tattoo world and for that we all can agree. Some hated him because he was the biggest tattoo supplier name for years and years with advertisement in almost every magazine selling starter kits and what seems to have become the blue print to shops and stores that are now selling supplies with no inhibitions. Others knew him as the ex-business partner of the late Paul Rogers and also have an opinion of him from those stories, but many of us were in the Spaulding starter kit generation and the book A-Z was a large part of our beginning into the tattoo world. so it seems that no matter what side you were on in the world where Huck Spaulding was we have indeed lost a huge part of an older tattoo world and with that said, R.I.P. Huck.

Here's my healed lady from Todd Noble :) I feel bad for not mentioning him in my earlier post. As I actually have a lady head from him, he should also be on my 'favorite lady heads list' too! :o

  19. I think I would be remiss if I didn't add Junii Salmon to this list, considering she's a) a total bad ass, and b) she did my last couple of tattoos, and will be doing more! 'b)' of course is not a criteria for this list, but I thought I'd throw it out there ;).

  24. Before the convention (over email) we had discussed doing something "hindu inspired" which I guess is what he's into these days. A few nights before the big day I had this dream that I was watching a documentary about "shamanic battles against evil" and Chad was interviewed in the documentary and was showing all these pictures of big cat tattoos and discussing how they were especially powerful against evil forces. So when I got there and we started talking about what to do I told him about my dream and he drew it up for me right there. :D

  27. I went to an exhibition on sailor tattoos today, where they display old pictures and flash from the Maritime Museum's collection. Thought I'd share a few pictures with you here. The quality is not great on all of them, but hope you'll like it :) (I wasn't sure where to post this, so moderators feel free to move it elsewhere if needed).

  29. This is easy, I would never date someone thats not tattooed. And he must have good tattoos, if the guy has shitty tattoos all over him that tells me he has really no interest in it and we won't be a good match, since tattoos are such a big part of my life, and one of my core interests.

  32. I think two weeks is a general time frame for being able to safely work tattooed skin. I would wait well past that point before you consider a touch up though. Give it a couple months to fully settle and heal and then evaluate the tattoo again.

  45. I haven't seen the Avatar one so I'm going with this one because maybe I'm jumping to conclusions based on incomplete information here but none of those other tattoos seem like the person who got them was very likely coerced into getting them. Maybe I'm wrong here and that soft-brained BME hippie is right and that this face tattoo is a testament to love and shit, but I've never experienced or observed love that looks like that. Seems more like abuse to me. The tattoo itself isn't the point.

  47. I would say you are in a similar position as myself. I work a job that does not like tattoos and I have to keep em covered up. Now while I only have my upper arm done, it went past the point of polos/short sleeve buttons-ups to be worn ever again. I also would love to fill my right arm up and have it "complete" but I also greatly enjoy rolling up my sleeves when I get hot (job can send me all around the world). While I really don't worry to much about loosing my job or anything in regards to that, I also am keeping it conservative at the moment. If you are like me you have TONS of room left elsewhere. I am about to start on finishing my left leg in a month. That will fully satisfy my urge to get tattooed for around a year, and I am getting a killer "sleeved limb" tattoo done. (The technical term for this is "squid-pant sleeve"). I say if you got any hesitation about the placement, save it for later. Like I said, having the ability to roll up your sleeves is key to me at least.

I think any large scale Thomas Hooper work is mind boggling. Especially the large pattern work. I find my self wondering how many times was the stencil laid? How many stencils? If their were several stencil what parts did he draw in? And then once you have all that on, just make the lines right? Seriously amazing stuff.
