  2. Figured I'd start a quick little thread on this! Went yesterday afternoon with a buddy who bought a piece for himself and another for a friend. Wasn't expecting to be so into so much of Thom's artwork.. seeing it on a screen doesn't really do it justice. At all. Super powerful.. and really fun. Met him and Nick Bubash and Thom signed my copy of his book... They thought it was pretty funny that I didn't realize those little black stamps of the man in the hat IS THOM! Shoulda known.. that design would make a killer tattoo, too, by the way. Thom was funny and very nice. I asked him about a photo of him that was in display and he said he liked it because it looked like he'd just come out of a casino at 5AM. He talks very, quietly. He was rifling through his bag to find the brush he usually signs things with and came up with a ball peen hammer and gave me a sideways glance -- "Well, that's not it," he said. Another quick thing, as we were looking through the portfolios sitting out a dude asked, "Hey, you mind if I just look over your shoulder?" I told him no problem as my friend and I pored over the pages and this dude was all up over the portfolios.. ended up snagging four rubbings and pounced on one when my friend passed on it. I kept thinking shit, I know that dude from somewhere.. "That was Civ, dude," my friend politely told me. HA! Ok, not such a quick thread. The atmosphere was pretty electric there.. Talked to Mike and their awesome shop dude Jon (who happens to be a reg at my bar) and just had a really fun afternoon and wanted to share. Anyone else?! Thank you Chris Grosso for making it happen.. wanted to talk a bit more but it was a busy time.

  4. You've had quite a lot of help from the responses so far -- now it's on you to head over to the shops in person. Think you've reached about the amount of information you're going to gather sitting in front of a computer. And also make sure you can explain how a fantasy dragon in different from a Japanese dragon. Which are real. - - - Updated - - - Good luck and let us know how it goes!

  8. Look what I just stumbled over! FST: On the Shoulders of Giants is a documentary film, currently in production by Stewart Robson, a tattooer at Frith Street Tattoo (FST) in London. This project is expected to be completed in late 2013. Shooting started in August 2012. Stewart has interviewed his friends and colleagues, some of them world-renown in tattoo circles but all of them have worked in the cramped infamous basement shop in the heart of London’s seedy soho district, to share this portrait of one of the most interesting, vibrant and influential modern tattoo shops. FST: On the Shoulders of Giants There's a bunch on cool teasers from the different interviews on the blog too. I'm super stoked for this to come out! You gotta share stuff like this with us @Stewart Robson - - - Updated - - - This was great by the way! (Also by Stewart)

    Hello from Oslo

Hey all. The last 6 months I have been reading this forum a lot, so I figured it was about time to become a member:) I am a 33 year old guy from Oslo, Norway. I took a small tattoo five years ago, and from that day I was sure I wanted to getting more tattoos. Now I am almost finished with my koi/scull sleeve, and I am using this forum for inspiration for my other arm whitch I`m allready planning.. I have learned a lot from reading LST so far!

I'm taking appointments as well as walk-ups the whole weekend and will be tattooing designs out of a book of flash I'll have with me. Hope to see some of you guys there!

  15. Shitty tattoos sometimes happen. It's a part of life and getting tattooed. We are humans; we make mistakes. It sounds like you need to do more research as to the type of dragon that you want, as a Japanese dragon would not be seen at a "chinese fair" (though they appear similar in shape, Japanese and Chinese dragons are not the same ). It also sounds like what you are interested in is a gothic era European influenced dragon design. Really, it seems like you might be rushing into this. While my initial reaction to this thread was a snarky "google is your friend" type of response, in reality, it might be best for you to do some serious research offline, at the library, looking through some books. Once you find a good reference image (or multiple) PLUS a really good quality tattoo artist, then you'll have the beginning of an awesome tattoo. However, if you want something specific but can't provide a visual example of what you're looking for, then it feels like that's just a recipe to not meet expectations and for you to leave the experience feeling let down.

Just pulled the trigger on this via the banner link... I enjoy the Spider Murphys book so much that the comparison was enough to sell me. Plus I've just drank a load of Left Hand 400lb monkey pale ale.

  18. don't be afraid to go to a shop and check it out, getting a tattoo is more than just a picture on the internet. see if you like the person and the vibe of the shop as well as their work. you're not buying a pair of shoes off the internet, so make a trip and hit some of the shops mentioned.

  21. Check out The Pearl Harbor Gift Shop in Toronto. I'm sure one of the artists there will be able to do what you want. A friend of mine has a big cat sleeve by India Amara. I'd like to get something by Tim Pausinger at some point.

  22. My wife has no tattoos. She has never had a problem with me continuing to get tattoos, except once when she asked, "Why another skull, don't you have enough" (answer: never can have enough). I always thought she was just tolerating my tattoos. But this past weekend she went from tolerating to supportive. When I found this forum I learned more about tattoos than I had learned in years of being tattooed. There is a whole nation of amazing tattooers out there and i have to visit as many as i can. So I told her I wanted to start traveling for tattoos. She said great, where are we going first? Life is good.

  24. After watching the new tattoo age video of Freddy and recently looking at the 222 Tattoo Shop thread I think we need a Temple Tattoo thread. Also for good measures let's make Tattoo 13 (Freddy's other shop with good tattooers as well) in the mix....For those who haven't seen it here is the interview Scott Sylvia did with Freddy Corbin for LST For me Temple Tattoo is where @Scott Sylvia outlined and did some of the shading on my lower left arm of a cobra with a Dia De Los Muertos mask on wrapped around a sacred heart. Also Freddy Corbin did the lettering on my collar bone which I've mentioned in the lettering thread was impressive to see him make a few lines on my collar then take the pen and start writing some amazing script straight on where within a few minutes said "take a look in the mirror", the man is impressive. But overall when I think of Temple I think of hanging out laughing with friends, after hours smoking inside, and shooting the shit. The beautiful religious art, altars, flash with very good and friendly tattooers inside. I remember in the early days trying to find something to eat close by on the weekends was a pain in the ass as the block/area used to be like a zombie ghost town on the weekends. For Tattoo Thirteen I instantly think of Chummy Alexanian and Hector Fong as well as the same vibe/atmosphere as Temple. Plus the infamous Friday the Thirteenth parties there. I've only been tattooed once there and it was by Freddy at one of the parties. I had a colleague with Parkinson's want to get tattooed so I gave him a list of tattoo shops to checkout and he decided on here so I went with him and Sonju tattooed him. The experience was great and Sonju was very patient and gave him a great tattoo which I can only imagine is no easy job in that situation and the uncontrollable moving. Lets hear your stories........

    opinion on this artist?

All you have to do is find a good tattooer whose work you like then two separate references; one of a wolf you like and one of a dragon you like......then if you choose a good tattooer they'll work their magic and blammo you'll have a badass tattoo that they've used their skills to morph and create. Remember to take their advice as its their craft not ours and they know the magic. Side note I used the word "magic" hella hecka times

  33. That tattoo is not very well done, It's kind of splitting hairs to criticize the anatomy of something that doesn't exist, but it's just not right, and the shading in the skull is not very smooth. It's looks like two different designs shoved together instead of a solid cohesive tattoo design. I would shy away from using other tattoos as refernce to be honest, especially if you don't have a keen eye for detail yet, also most tattoo photos are taken from weird angles and if someone tried to trace it, your tattoo would be out of proportion. Not to mention there are way more bad tattoos than good out there. Find some illustrations of the dragons you want, hit the bookstore and or library, a nice clean illustration will be something your tattooer will appreciate.

  34. 22 with a face tattoo. Sounds like an X or Violent Femmes song. There are few things more annoying to me than models of any type. Standing around looking sexy or sad while people take your photo is not my idea of a career. No matter how much it pays.

    Upcoming Tattoos

I have an appointment on Feb 4th, I am not going to say who because he is not that well known, but from the tattoos I've seen him do and the people he has tattooed around and who have tattooed him, I think I might have found my guy for Japanese. I am just having him start on the back of my leg and leaving my rib for what I talked about earlier in the thread. Still not decided which route to go, but did go back and revisited Jason Kundell's stuff yesterday at his shop, those guys are always very hospitable when I stop in. Like I said I like his stuff for sure, but he does everything so big I feel like the space I would have to give him to do a dragon would be the size he normally does one claw in. He seems to love to go big and the finished product certainly has quite the impact. Needless to say I got a feel for how long he is booked out, so I am going to meet with Dan when he comes into town later this month and see what his situation is and go from there.

    Bad first experience

I have had pieces put on entirely free-hand, knowing ahead of time what it was that was going on, and roughly, how. That involved a whole level of trust that you just can't have with someone you haven't worked with, or someone who isn't a major, major tattooer. If you are getting a large piece done, a sleeve, a backpiece, whatever, I don't think it out of line to have the whole thing laid-out on paper ahead of time. Doesn't necessarily have to be a stencil, but I'd sure want to see the tattoo in it's entirety before I committed to getting it done. When I had my arm sleeved, I already had a decent amount of work on it. The tattoer that did it, Miles Maniaci, wrapped my arm in onion-sheet and traced the old work. A few weeks later he called me into the shop to see his design. I had given him some elements I wanted used, and he did the whole thing on the onion-sheet so that I could see how it looked on my arm. It was tits, and he started it the following week. About thirty-odd hours later, I had a sleeve that I'm still, ten years later, proud to wear. Trust is the key element. If you don't know what someone's ideas and thoughts are for your work before they start, trust is hard to come by. .02
