  1. David finally colored in the outlines on my ribs. There's still a background to get done, but.... not bad for one sitting of color. - - - Updated - - - PS: I blurred out his tallywhacker for our more sensitive viewers.

Is this the right thread for work in progress? I am in the process of getting a koi with maple leaves three quarter sleeve which is being done by Mo Coppoletta from The Family Business, so far I have had two three hour sessions, pretty much all the outline has now been finished. Apologies for the poor quality of the pictures, they were taken with a phone, one handed over my shoulder ...

  5. Figured I'd start a quick little thread on this! Went yesterday afternoon with a buddy who bought a piece for himself and another for a friend. Wasn't expecting to be so into so much of Thom's artwork.. seeing it on a screen doesn't really do it justice. At all. Super powerful.. and really fun. Met him and Nick Bubash and Thom signed my copy of his book... They thought it was pretty funny that I didn't realize those little black stamps of the man in the hat IS THOM! Shoulda known.. that design would make a killer tattoo, too, by the way. Thom was funny and very nice. I asked him about a photo of him that was in display and he said he liked it because it looked like he'd just come out of a casino at 5AM. He talks very, quietly. He was rifling through his bag to find the brush he usually signs things with and came up with a ball peen hammer and gave me a sideways glance -- "Well, that's not it," he said. Another quick thing, as we were looking through the portfolios sitting out a dude asked, "Hey, you mind if I just look over your shoulder?" I told him no problem as my friend and I pored over the pages and this dude was all up over the portfolios.. ended up snagging four rubbings and pounced on one when my friend passed on it. I kept thinking shit, I know that dude from somewhere.. "That was Civ, dude," my friend politely told me. HA! Ok, not such a quick thread. The atmosphere was pretty electric there.. Talked to Mike and their awesome shop dude Jon (who happens to be a reg at my bar) and just had a really fun afternoon and wanted to share. Anyone else?! Thank you Chris Grosso for making it happen.. wanted to talk a bit more but it was a busy time.

  6. I gave my resignation letter at my job which I have grown to resent over the last year after finding a job where I am finally appreciated and learning more about my field of practice. As I walked out of our main station I raised my hands in the air and yelled: Best day EVER.

  7. I couldn't get off work, so I sent my sister and brother in law (both have lots of work from O'Donnell, and just started getting worked on by Hooper) to 'cover' it for OV- if anyone takes pics and feels like sharing, I'd love to have multiple 'views' for Occult Vibrations!

Rubendall is starting my back on Tuesday. I'm a little nervous to be honest! Also I spat out so many different ideas and elements during the consultation that I have no idea what the final product even looks like yet.

  11. I can't imagine having that many tattoos at age 22. I had no money when I was that age for one and I spent from 25-33 getting tattooed very regularly and have not run out of room, nor have i tattooed my face, hands, or neck. My prediction he will go the route of the reformed white supremacist and have it all removed by let's say age 28. Modeling career can only last so long and the popularity of tattoos fluctuates between generations, so I can imagine being a former tattoo model with no marketable skills be a very lucrative future. On the other hand I can't give the ladies a pass either. I think every third girl in Portland is a tattoo model or in beauty school, or a tattooed model in beauty school that does roller derby on the side. I don't know what the future brings for them either.

  12. don't be afraid to go to a shop and check it out, getting a tattoo is more than just a picture on the internet. see if you like the person and the vibe of the shop as well as their work. you're not buying a pair of shoes off the internet, so make a trip and hit some of the shops mentioned.

  17. I got out of the hotel and into a house today! And fired up my spinning wheel for the first time in over a year. (But dang! I'm so bored and lost in this big ol' empty house with no tv and no internet except for my phone). I might do a lot of spinning. And knitting. And reading. And whatever else I can think of.

  18. Tattoo models, male or female, can't go away quickly enough in my opinion. If I had any brains at all I'd go into the laser tattoo removal business because there's going to be so much money in that.

  19. Opening a JOINT savings account with my wife, contributing to my meager retirement fund I started last year, and, weirdly, becoming a more senior dude at the ol j-o-b. Finally able to start enjoying NYC even.. only took eight years. Feeling a little more like one of those grown-ups I've heard so much about. @slayer9019 A house with a garage and a yard..? What's a garage and a yard??

  20. I have started the next phase of my medical training - moving from student to intern! It scares the bejeebus out of me that I am now having to be responsible for real patients. First overnight on-call shift is Monday, which I anticipate will be both interesting and completely overwhelming.

  21. Check out The Pearl Harbor Gift Shop in Toronto. I'm sure one of the artists there will be able to do what you want. A friend of mine has a big cat sleeve by India Amara. I'd like to get something by Tim Pausinger at some point.

  22. My opinion is if a person doesn't get tattoos because they are too picky, they are just making excuses to not get tattooed, which is fine, it's not for everyone. My sisters are both artists. My older sister is a Art Director and very picky. She has two tattoos, that yes did take a lot of direction but still got done. My younger sister is still trying to get that "perfect" tattoo aka not ready yet.

  24. I'm hoping to get tattooed by Mike at the Philly convention next month. He's only doing walk-up stuff here, no appointments. Richard Smith is going to do some sort of mystical-themed reaper on the side of my thigh at the convention, also...super stoked for that.

  26. Yes it is, Androosh. The man is a master! I'm fortunate to live within driving distance of CTC, so take advantage of that whenever possible. Heading there in a few hours-it's my youngest son's 18th birthday, so time for the traditional tattoo.

  27. Well, what the hell...this month is in the bag already, but might as well toss one in just to keep in practice. Tattooed by Nick Colella @ CTC this past summer, a little family action.

  28. Seems like we can expect a pretty weak showing this month (slackers!), so I'll throw my most recent tattoo into the ring. Torch + snake from Ron Henry Wells, done just before Christmas at Congress Street Tattoo.

  29. Being fine with tattoos on men but not women seems to be a common double standard. Just saw this on a silly music forum regarding Aimee Mann's tattoos: "yea..im not a big fan of tatoos on women... it means theyve done something very bad...whether it be drugs or crime. but aimee loves boxing and tatoos are mandatory there lol." On the one hand it makes me laugh. On the other hand, why are people such freakin' idiots?

    Upcoming Tattoos

I have an appointment on Feb 4th, I am not going to say who because he is not that well known, but from the tattoos I've seen him do and the people he has tattooed around and who have tattooed him, I think I might have found my guy for Japanese. I am just having him start on the back of my leg and leaving my rib for what I talked about earlier in the thread. Still not decided which route to go, but did go back and revisited Jason Kundell's stuff yesterday at his shop, those guys are always very hospitable when I stop in. Like I said I like his stuff for sure, but he does everything so big I feel like the space I would have to give him to do a dragon would be the size he normally does one claw in. He seems to love to go big and the finished product certainly has quite the impact. Needless to say I got a feel for how long he is booked out, so I am going to meet with Dan when he comes into town later this month and see what his situation is and go from there.

NYC used to scare the shit outta me for sure! After driving there a lot for 5 years I've learned the rules for NYC driving. Lines mean nothing (EXCEPT dont block the box) Speed limits? Speed limit is keep up Pedestrians/bikes/etc WILL jump in front of your car Watch out for those damned taxi drivers. Most of the time I am convinced they are hammer drunk Generally the more aggressive you drive, the safer you are. If you show weakness you'll never get anywhere and people will cut you off. I generally like driving in NYC, outside of rush hour it really isnt all that bad

Racist...I'm sorry, DJ, and no diss intended, but man, that's the most overworked word in the english language. Tattooers, of everyone in the world, should get the idea that Political Correctness is bullshit. That doesn't, by a long shot, mean that actual, real-live racism is okay, it just means that I would think people who typically operate on/in the edges of mainstream society should realize that PC is a political construct designed strictly to enslave people, and to ensure they do their master's bidding. If you say something the least bit non-PC, you are "racist", or a "nazi", or my favorite, a "Hater". I'm just glad I spend most of my time in Chicago, where a spade is still a spade. No matter what country it came from.

  41. I see a couple of people suggesting that its a bad idea to go the freehand route. sorry but that is false. if you go to someone and they cant draw a good design on you chances are that they wouldn't have drawn it any better on paper. I am not saying they don't use stencils and I'm sure they do sometimes but I personally have never seen Richard Stell, Troy Denning or Chris Trevino use a stencil. also I work with both Horizakura and Yoni Zilber who I watch draw on entire sleeves and backpieces that become the most beautifuly executed tattoos. So what im saying is its not the process/approach that is to blame for giving you an unsatisfactory tattoo it is the artist that executed it. I'd hate to see you go into a situation where youre gonna get tattooed by a Chris Garver or Horitomo and he says he's gonna freehand it so you get spooked and end up opting out of it because someone on the internet said that freehand is a red flag. also drawing on the spot is perfectly ok if the artist has the experience and skills to do so. if Gordon Ramsey offered to come to my house and make me dinner using whatever i have in my cupboard I'm not going to request that he figure out the recipe a week in advance because he's going to nail it.

  42. Had the last major session on my backpiece this past Saturday. 8 sessions over 6 months, 25.5 hours and 2 tubs of Aquaphor later, it's basically done. Have to go back next week to get a few touch-ups and darken the blue up a bit, but basically done. I'll get some better pictures soon.
