For TATTOOERS ONLY, what's your biggest pet peeve?

@hogg @slayer9019 I didn't say anything out of respect for the guys at the shop and because it isn't something that I was ready to advertise. Right now I just work there and do anything that anyone wants me to. I am basically the shop bitch. The understanding with everyone is that if they feel comfortable with me and feel like I have earned being there, they may offer me an apprenticeship. I don't know how far off that is, nor do I care. I do everything I can to help everyone who walks in and everyone who works there. Right now, the opportunity to learn to tattoo is secondary and my responsibility to the guys at the shop and the customers is first. I intend to protect and cherish the tattoo world I have come to love. I believe the way to do that is not to expect handouts or free information. Everything is earned and I want to earn anything I get.9 points -

Hogg is right. Five hours back there is no joke. I know that I have posted my back on here before, but I don't remember if I posted progress photos. Here is a link to my Flickr page. I took a photo after each session. The entire tattoo took about 22 to 25 hours. The first session was an hour and a half, and the second was about the same. That means that I put in over twenty hours the last three. It was rough, but now it is done so fuck it. Flickr: averytvz's Photostream5 points -

Hi, my name is Jesse Blunt. I've enjoyed watching this forum grow so much in between infrequent visits and I'm impressed with the quality of conversation I've witnessed. I hope to be checking back more often and eventually have something to contribute. I've been a tattooer for 4 years now and I've just started learning what it takes to call myself that. I have a lot to learn still. Thanks to those who work hard to provide this resource to folks like me. Thanks, Jesse3 points -

Racist...I'm sorry, DJ, and no diss intended, but man, that's the most overworked word in the english language. Tattooers, of everyone in the world, should get the idea that Political Correctness is bullshit. That doesn't, by a long shot, mean that actual, real-live racism is okay, it just means that I would think people who typically operate on/in the edges of mainstream society should realize that PC is a political construct designed strictly to enslave people, and to ensure they do their master's bidding. If you say something the least bit non-PC, you are "racist", or a "nazi", or my favorite, a "Hater". I'm just glad I spend most of my time in Chicago, where a spade is still a spade. No matter what country it came from.3 points

Alrighty - looks like I got the timezones confused here and the update actually happened last night! Sorry if anybody experienced some unexpected downtime, I was in bed watching some crappy show on netflix. The upshot is that the site is running a little faster now! As always - please do report any funkiness or issues that you experience on LST anytime. Thanks2 points

I feel ya on the balance. Here in Wisconsin the "native-american' thing is a big issue, with maybe a little different spin. As far as the whole 'native-american" thing, my friends who are members of various tribes refer to themselves as "indians", unless there's an "outsider" around. Hey-I'm a native-american too-I was born here! I guess I'm kinda old-school Chicago. I don't get bent if someone calls me a kraut, or a mick, and I don't expect them to get bent if I call them a polock! Be's that way here, at least for the most part. As for tattoo blogs, hey, as long as whoever is running it is legitimately doing it to further the art of, and understanding of, tattooing, I got no problem with it. When pencil-necks try to push their own agenda by bending things around to their own viewpoint and putting that on the whole "tattoo community", then we part company. It's all good...2 points

After 14 sessions spanning 15 months, I'm thrilled to say that my back piece--courtesy of Jay Cavna--is finished. It's a rooster/boar/snake battle royale with peonies. We just wrapped it up a few hours ago. I couldn't be happier with it and am blown away by Jay's skill and commitment to his work. Here's the pic.2 points

Old tattoo photos

Found this one of Tony D'Annessa on Getty Images. They say the photo is from 1955, but Tony started tattooing in 1958 so who knows exactly when the photo is from. And one of Tony from the 4th of July this past year, posted by Dave Cummings on his instagram: That also answers the question about what a tattoo will look like with a scar through it: hard as fucking nails.1 point -
My opinion on that kind of tattooing, or really any kind of tattooing that is more associated with a handful of individuals rather than a certain style, is that if you want it, you should really be travelling to get tattooed by the masters of the style. You're going to get a better tattoo from it, and I think that you'd be way more stoked by a tattoo done by the artists you admire than by competent imitations.1 point

So I got tattooed two weeks ago and am due for another session on my back at the end of the month, so I have really not been in "need" of new work lately, but a local shop had a fundraiser yesterday for a family affected by domestic violence, and I could not resist stopping in to get something for a good cause. I got this tiny but awesome little flower that magically fit perfectly between the two larger pieces on my thigh, like it was fate! Done by the fabulous Eilo at MTL Tattoo here in Montreal. I love it. (Please pay no attention to my torch, which is still healing and majorly flaky!)1 point

When I was working service industry jobs, I would frequently be stopped by customers who wanted me to stand still (while holding hot food en route to a table!) so they could inspect my tattoos, people would grab me and try to touch my tattoos constantly. Almost always older men, but sometimes women! My husband is heavily tattooed and other than the occasional "sick ink, bro!" he has never been accosted the way that i have. The worst thing about something like that happening at work is that you are trapped and you have to be nice, even if people are being totally inappropriate. I used to complain that if i were a stripper, at least i'd have a bouncer who'd boot the jerks trying to grab me. working in service jobs in a more affluent neighborhood also brought to my attention the fact that a lot of square, office-type dudes definitely have a sense of exoticism about tattoos, like "ooh you look just like a suicide girl!" like i'm supposed to be this available babe who loves taking her clothes off because i have a lot of highly visible tattoos. nope, sorry bro. i'm a married mom, just like your wife. calm down.1 point -
I'll of course stop eventually but hope that I still have plenty of tattoos to go still. For me, a big part of why I love getting tattooed, beyond the actual tattoos of course, is that I've met a lot of really amazing people through it who inspire me, who stimulate me, who push me to be a better person in a lot of ways, and I want to continue having that in my life for as long as possible.1 point

So, maybe 1977? Around there..I got a parrot done by Dale Grande at Chicago Tattoo. It was partially a cover-up, partially just sumpin I thought was kool. Scott does handle the sale of Thom's art, and he doesn't get paid for it. He just genuinely loves Thom and wants to see him recognized, and to receive some financial compensation for the great work that he produces. I have been tattooed by Scott twice, and both times I got great tattoos and had a great time. He is one of the nicest and most intelligent people you will ever meet. He recently decided to start tattooing again on a semi regular basis. If you have the chance to get tattooed by him do not pass it up. In my opinion he is one of the best tattooers in the world. I know that sometime in late January and early February he will be in Dallas, and then in Austin. If you want a tattoo that you can not get anywhere else then find out when he is tattooing near your town, and get there.1 point -
