    Hi!!!

Sorry to be so rude as to not read all of that but basically you signed up to take take take and not give back to the forum? Do you even have tattoos? This seems pretty one sided from where I'm standing...

    Hi!!!

@SailorClaire Matt Lodder beat you to it by a few years. My opinion of this subject aside, I presume you've read The Post Modified Body? I skimmed your proposal and read the first questions. I must say, I'm not impressed. You won't get any further insight or information than a Daily Mail article or any of the tattoo books you can buy in HMV. Here's my opinion: When it comes to tattoos (and probably other areas of life), anything online is very far from the reality of the situation. Speak to real people in the real world and get a more honest view of what you're writing about. I don't know why I keep saying this to academics, they rarely listen...

  3. Anyone else prefer shading to lining? I always have the worst time on long lines, just draaaaaaaaaaaaagging that skin. Shading is kinda fun, here a zap there a zap everywhere a zapzap.

    Rib cage for first tattoo

Back to the subject of ribcage tattooing... I've got probably 70+ hours of work on me, so I'm no cherry. That said, I laid-down for just under three and a half hours with Nick Colella yesterday, and I tell you what, it did not feel nice. It was tolerable...but you'd best to have a high pain threshhold!

    Hi!!!

Well @SailorClaire, you could have asked us before you just threw down what you'd be doing. Im sure if you participated in this forum beyond what you can gain from it (your thesis paper), many of the women on here wouldn't mind participating. If you love tattoos, then participate in the threads on the forum... Im sure that we'd love the input. its always better to give as much as you take away

    Hi!!!

Maybe I'm just sensitive to stuff, but it seems a bit presumptuous... shouldn't it be phrased in the form of a question? Something like "Hi, blah, blah, blah... I would like to use this forum to interview you guys on your opinions of your tattoos. Is that ok?"

Yea for sure. thanks for the advice. I'm really enjoying this site because of the great community, i've been on a few other sites and none of them have the helpfulness and kindess that lastsparrow does.

    good client behavior

I ALWAYS try to kick down a decent chunk to my tattooer. He deals with my special requests, does killer work, and I rarely have to wait to get it done. I'm afraid I usually end-up more in the "flat-rate" tip zone, but it's enough to make everyone happy. I don't look so much at the price of the work, rather, on the quality and the experience of it.

  11. That would be an infection. Let breath, but when in public place a sterile gauze pad over the tattoo. Also, If you have medical insurance and can get some anti-biotics, I highly recommend doing that as soon as possible as well. Will help kick the infection out before you get MRSA.

  12. A while back, when the compulsion to get my legs tattooed became impossible to ignore anymore, his was one of the first tattoo blogs I came across. I was so impressed with what I saw there that it made me re-think everything I had believed about what a tattoo was. I knew I wanted tattoos as good as what he was doing... and so I started googling stuff like "how to get a really good tattoo" and ended up here. His work completely changed my impression of what is even possible with tattooing. I owe him a beer probably! Who knows what kind of work I'd be getting if I hadn't found him and thus found you guys. I might've ended up with a marilyn monroe blow-up doll or something!

    Hi!!!

I don't know when Matt Lodder wrote that, but Margot Mifflin's Bodies of Subversion covers a lot of this very well, and there's a new edition of it coming out in the next couple of months.

Tipping (money or gifts) is a great idea though we try not to talk specifics on this site. Many tattooers have asked us not to talk numbers and we hold that line..sorry can't be of more specific help.

  24. Yep, you said it yourself. Call the shop and talk to someone if you are serious about it. This site (or the internet in general, if you ask me) is not the place to discuss pricing.

  25. My latest tattoo lowdown, Well its bad news, I had been fairly excited as this year Myke Chambers was going to tattoo my thigh here in Australia. Unfortunately his trip to Australia had to be cancelled as customs will not let him into the country. Our government in Australia is F-#ked Still have good news, hopefully if all goes to plan Steve Byrne will be doing a battle royal on my other thigh. Need to think about animals I like for that :D.

I use to think that the line "This is how you turn your boring party into art" was "This is how you turn you boring party into hard." One word totally changed the meaning of the song.

  32. @Lochlan Kudos for respecting that. @Shaun1105 I always tip just enough to make it obvious that I like the work. Tip slightly more than you feel like doing, and make sure that you express your gratitude and everyone will be happy.

    Hi from eastern Iowa!

Sam welcome to the site! Upload some of your tattoos so we can take a look......also enjoy the site. @rocketfish344 Why don't you start your own intro rather then jumping on others intros as we'd love to learn more about you as it appears you have lots of questions and ambivalence about getting a tattoo.

  35. I think @Stewart Robson hit a good point before in the thread charity volunteer told leave store because her tattoos. You have to realize you are doing something that most people are not going to accept, it kinda comes with the whole getting tattooed thing. I know it sounds kinda harsh but that is the way I look at it as well. I suggest to just let it slide off your back and go on your way. Life's too short to deal with people that you don't want to be around.

  38. @DJDeepFried Everybody enjoys aspects of 'exotic' cultures. One man's mundane is another's exotic, and vice-versa. 'Traditional' Japanese tattooing has regional and time-specific styles too. Yokohama style isn't necessarily the same as Hiroshima style. 1930's style isn't the same as 1990's style etc. I haven't heard of a 'rule' that states you can't get a koi on your arm, unless of course if you have a koi with waves on your upper arm and an eagle with clouds on your forearm. Positions of figure's legs (especially in relation to lotus flowers) often tell us things about their spiritual state in Buddhist art too. Jesus spells out his (latin) name, gang-style, in many paintings from the middle-ages onward.

    What's In A Name?

I am always surprised when people open up shops with the name that a simple google search would show is pretty common and already in use. If your going to put all the effort into starting a shop a new name seems like a fairly simple thing.
