I agree with the school - if we don't mention tattoos or educate them about tattoos, the kids will simply forget about tattoos. Banning sex education has reduced pregnancy why wouldn't it work for tattoos? Remember - ignorance is power!!!7 points

This is on my foot! It's a little distorted from the swelling in this picture. This is the only healed one I have, just of the blood: I found the foot excruciating! I'm so glad my next appointment is on the arm.5 points

Hooper did this foot as part of a full squid leg: I was lucky enough to see it in person while it was being worked on and it was knock-you-on-your-ass good. I'd love to do something like that with my feet but I'm not in a place in my life right now where I can heal something like that.5 points -

Reviving this thread partly 'cause I love it, partly because I have something to add in terms of awesome things I've done recently. This afternoon I successfully defended my PhD! Yikes! I am still kind of wrapping my head around the enormity of it, and so spewing my crazy wired energy wherever I can. :)4 points -

Thanks. He was posting his sketch, him tattoing me, and the final piece on Instragram. It was a great experience for me, and I came out of it with more than I expected. I know this is more of a traditional tattoo forum, but I'm OK posting here. Personally a bulk of the traditional tattoo work is not my style, but I've always appreciated a good tattoo regardless of it's genre, and I've seen some awesome traditional work here in my short time in this forum. - - - Updated - - - Being from Boston, I only travelled to Columbus because once I had chosen Gunnar I had to go where he was. I'm now looking into getting something added to my eagle, and currently am looking into Russ Abbott who will be guest spotting next year in my neck of the woods. I really don't want to travel again because that added a lot of cost to an already expensive piece. - - - Updated - - - As a side note to my Gunnar piece, here's the tattoo surrounded by the three drawings I did that I gave Gunnar as my "concept"4 points -

WHO: Gunnar (Gaylord) WHAT: A caricature of me listening to heavy metal music that comes to life WHEN: Oct 22 2012 WHERE: RedTree Tattoo Gallery in Columbus OH WHY: I drew pictures on the sides of cassette cases 30 years ago while I would listen to a late night heavy metal radio show. For a long time (in recent memory) I wanted a tattoo that was conceptually what I was drawing. Finally took the time to get it done.4 points -

i think it may have to do with the area the school is in as well. I've been asked to come speak to my daughters gifted class to give a presentation on tattooing, both modern day and the various histories of it as well. this was a room full of 6th graders, and they had some very intelligent questions, not at all what you would expect walking into the room. I enjoyed the experience and i believe the kids got something out of it, other than tattoos are cool and i should go get one tomorrow. I believe the censorship that school is using is only going to harm those kids in the long run. tattooing would come a long way if more people were educated about what makes a professional tattoo worth waiting for. thats just my opinion tho...3 points

I'm going to have BJ Betts dial in the script on my chest next time he comes to CA, have Jondix do some patterns behind the plane and besides my back which will get started in Jan, those are all I really have left for open spots. I better just be patient and choose wisely :D3 points -

If you deny kids anything, there will always be a sizable percentage of them that will go to the ends of the earth to seek it out, especially if it's "taboo". By making all this fuss, it'll just end up driving a few of those kids in that direction - and that would certainly include doin' it the hard way (scratchers, needle-and-india-ink, etc).2 points -

He never bothered to cover it!!! Later on I asked him where he got them, he said one was in Hong Kong the other in Hawaii ... Dude was a badass...2 points -

Some killer stuff in here! for perspective: Done by Greg Christian while he was in NYC at Wooster St Social Club I had made this appt a while ago and was really looking forward to it. Thought for sure it would get canceled after the Hurricane happened and flooded the city, leaving downtown Manhattan without power all week. Luckily, Greg made it to NYC last minute and I got this tattoo from him a day after the power came back on. It was a really cool ending to a very shitty week. Very fortunate.2 points

Ahhhh shhhhiiittt! I really wasn't expecting this much gold to come out this little thread. @Stewart Robson Thanks for the advice. As a young person with little to do/keep track of, I find it hard sometimes to remember other people have lives with a lot of things to juggle etc. You're totally right about the Instagram thing too. I think a lot maybe people fail to see it as it is for most tattooers, a marketing tool, not some fun little place to share pictures of your shoes and such. @Jennifer Stell I hope you don't see this thread as a dig on you, or Richard. I know you guys are busy, and in fact you're right. I wasn't just referring to you guys. Mostly, I just wanted an experienced view on the essential information needed to convey serious intent. I know you guys are busy doing exciting things for yourselves and for tattooing as a whole. I'm pumped to continue corresponding with you. I look forward to meeting you and Richard, and I can't wait to have some Stell on my skin!2 points -

Just saw this thread, i'll give it a whirl. My name is Dave, i'm 46, born and lived always in NYC. Spent the 80's as a metalhead (so much hair, thank you Stiff Stuff) and spent most of my time at concerts clubs, and getting stoned in various back alleys and parks. :p Got married in '90, had our one kid in '92. We have 5 cats and a Shepherd/Dobie mix dog. For a living i manage paper, printing and budgeting of both, for a large marketing company. I read alot, play guitar badly, am into ancient Egyptian everything, and a huge hockey fan. Got my first tattoo at 15, but it was a sewing needle and testors ink scratch job while we were wasted. It's 99% gone now. I'd always wanted to get a real one, but life happened and i guess i forgot about it, till a few years ago. Once i'd gotten one, i caught the bug and i'm working on my 6th now. Now i'm just trying to age gracefully and still be a metalhead. \m/1 point -

Yeah, I did, thanks. It was a while ago, before I had a digital camera. If I still have a photo, it's in the bottom of a box somewhere. I dont think it was technically accomplished though. I only got to do it because someone saw a set of 20th Century occult flash I did and picked the portrait of AOS. I've tattooed sections of his automatic drawings and some of his sigils too. I thought it was cool too (except the sigils, that seemed to defeat the purpose) As a geek note to the mystical/occult interested: Frith Street Tattoo is within 15 minutes walk of the birthplace of Austin Osman Spare and around 5 minutes walk from the birthplace of William Blake. Crowley lived in various locations a further 20 mins walk west. (I use walking times because in central London driving takes longer)1 point -

cltattooing reacted to Dan S for a topic
Okay... I'm elderly. 58, born and raised in Chicago, specifically on the South Side and later, the collar suburbs. Left home at 13, was put into a "youth home" at 15, got out and roamed the country and points south at just shy of 18. Before I was 21 I had lived or spent hunks of time in Mexico, Columbia, el-Lay, and some other garden spots. Trained as a machinist, and worked in shops for many years, now I sell machine equipment made in Germany, to customers from Brazil to Thailand. Got my first real motorsickle when I was 10, a Sears Allstate 49 cc. My next one was a 1947 Knucklehead that I bought as a collection of parts in a basket and made into a chopper...that was when I was 18. Wrecked it and myself shortly after, and didn't ride again until I bought a Shovelhead in 1977...still got that one, but I don't ride anywhere near as much as I used to did-arthritis and kids and all of that. Anyhow, I rebuild and restore old Harleys on occasion to relax myself. Started putting on my own tattoos when I was what, I think maybe 13, something like that, and spent a good amount of time at CTC watching Cliff Raven and Dale Grande work, and then getting my homemade stuff covered. I have a few tattoos now, but I'm afraid I'm not a general collector-I've gotten all my work form people working at CTC. Dale, Miles Maniaci, Nick Collela, and onoe by Mark Miller. Other than that, I've been into martial arts since I started taking Jiu-Jitsu at the local Y when I was 8. I've boxed for the Chicago Park District, and studied a variety of different arts. I was involved with the same federation of schools for about 25 years, studying and teaching a mixture of arts. Still own my own school, and teach classes 3 nights a week. Keeps me from getting too old. That's about it, pretty boring. I listen to mostly the blues, some of what is now called "classic rock", Hendrix, the Doors, like that, and actually saw most of the name bands of the 60's and 70's play. But my heart is with the blues. What I grew up listening to...kinda schizophrenic on that, actually, listened to a lot of old hillbilly music as a kid, and still do. Not 'country", but hillbilly and rockabilly. Merle Haggard, Jim Reeves, Jack Scott, all that type of thing. Then when I left the house, it was Muddy Waters, Junior Wells, Otis Rush, and Howlin'Wolf. I've sat and had drinks with most of them over the years, back before they were all famous and like that. So now I'm elderly, but I sure can't relate to it. Yeah, arthritis and shit, but hey-basically I'm just a couple of 16 year-olds with a 26 year-old built in for a chaperone. Still getting tattoo'ed, still trying to live life-and largely succeeding. Got divorced a few years ago after being married 35 years, and am now with a Lady that shares my life, my home, and my heart. Have 6 kids to keep me on my toes, from 14 to 25, and an 8 year-old granddaughter that is truly a pain in my, er, that I love dearly. That is all.1 point -

I would have a tendency, with the feet to go with something that matches, size & style wise. A pair of Japanese masks a traditional cockerel and pig or matching circular geometric designs like a rose mandala. Another option would be a single design that flows over both feet. This one tattooed by Michael E. Bennett from 2Spirit Tattoo in San Francisco. And this by Tomas Tomas of Into You, London1 point
