  3. You can milk a cow all day long, it doesn't mean you're getting any... A time limit shows you can either get it done, or you can't... Please read further back into the post, as most of the new topics that come up in this thread have already been addressed... Most of the "canvases" aren't coming back for a second sitting... And who knows if they would even want to? Seriously? And, when at a convention, and someone walks up asking for a piece, I know what is possible to accomplish, as opposed to some unrealistic opinion of how amazing Richard is, I know what can be done, and what will need more then one sitting. It's one of those don't bite off more then you can chew things... Knowing one's limitations is a good thing.

    Aloha all-

Howdy- I guess I should finally get around to my introduction. My name is Doug Hardy. I tattoo at my father's shop, Tattoo City, in San Francisco. I was apprenticed under Michael 'Rollo' Malone at China Sea Tattoo in Honolulu from 1992-1996, then moved to Minneapolis where I worked at Northside Tattoo, The Ink Lab, Uptown Tattoo and finally The Aloha Monkey. After almost 12 years in the Frozen North, I moved back to my hometown to help run Tattoo City and be my father's right hand man after his retirement. I also help with Hardy Marks Publications and try to stay connected with other artists when I'm not wrangling my goddamned cats.

Couple of sheets from the shop painted by Derek Ward. People have actually gotten quite a few off these sheets. I think he sells prints of these but it's a five sheet set combined with two halloween and one christmas sheet.

    Upcoming Tattoos

Just got off the phone with The Family Business in London. I've booked in for three sessions with Mo Coppoletta in March, April and Mayr next yea to bring my left arm down into a full sleeve. He did my chest plates and the existing (half) sleeve on that arm, so after thinking about it I decided I would keep the continuity and have him continue it down. Actually when I look at the tattooing I got from him (some of it about 8 years old at this stage) it is actually some of the most vivid tattooing I have, even now - he really knows how to put on a tattoo.

As we watched this last night, and tried to avoid punching the TV in annoyance, I commented to @Graeme that the problem is that that grating-as-fuck moron Kay Kutta (sp? Who cares) is actually kind of right; he admits openly that it's a "game" and has little to do with who is actually skilled or talented. Only he is totally down with that reality, while the rest of us think it's depressing as hell. Luckily, we countered our being bummed out by that fucking traditional episode (the only highlight of which was watching Richard Stell try to murder people with his eyes) by watching the new tattoo age, which cleaned some of the dirt off.

Kind of! Yeah I would have to agree x10. That's who's doing my left arm (tiger, lotus, mandala...). Aside from being amazingly talented, he is a great guy to chat with. I've got 4 sessions down...2 to go. His card reads: "I'm not the cheapest, just the slowest."

  12. My first trip to Dallas was in 1998 and I worked right near Richard's shop. The owner of the shop said, "come on, I'll introduce you to Richard Stell". We walked over there and they were filming Walker Texas Ranger, Richard was tattooing. I got to meet Richard Stell, Mike Wilson AND Chuck Norris all within 5 minutes of each other. It was the coolest day ever for me. Richard wouldn't stop tattooing for them to film and told them to deal with it and film around him, it was rad. I told Richard that story recently from my perspective and he chuckled. I am very excited to see him on Ink Master.

Would have liked to hear more of what Richard had to say but I guess what's the point... since the contestants don't seem to listen. They were all acting like traditional is "easy" but then were not able to do it. Those messed up flags were depressing. Or "jacked"!

  24. yeah... I'll have a better idea of what's going on with 2013 in December. It's getting to where we can't keep up with it all. . . Or I just have been out of a shop so long I am having to reprogram myself to keep up w/ that, and be good at being on the road still... I know it seems trivial, I just like to be on point, I feel like I am getting thin skinned trying to retain it all: Schedules, appointments, designs, setup, breakdown, taking care of the man, and making sure each client is 100% or more happy with it all, and all the other joys of being a shop owner again, etc... Sound Fun? Haha, it is... Too bad I'm getting old, and can't keep up with the cool kids anymore. Actually thank god for that. Maybe I'll be tattooing or at least painting again regularly by the end of the year. Jen

  25. Just a heads up: Tattoo City will be in full force again with Mary Joy and I tattooing all 3 days. Kahlil should be there one day as well, but unfortunately Jen Lee won't be able to attend. My father will be at the convention on Saturday and we will have more of his original art and prints for sale. Hardy Marks books also at the booth!

    Sports Tattoos?

It's kind of like beer logos. I started out thinking I was going to get a whole leg of beer logos tattooed on me, I ended up with 2 that made pretty good tattoos and after seeing how bad some others have turned out decided to fill up my leg with traditional stuff instead. Attached are the two tattoos I ended up getting, done by Ross Ferrie and Mike Volkakis respectfully. Check out the link some bad stuff going on.. Just a question about the people getting tattooed... How are these folks selected? Are they aware of the situation as far as the artist not being what I would consider very good? Do they pick collectors who are ignorant to good tattooing? No matter if someone is a great tattooer or not...I can't imagine anyone with a brain being down for getting tattooed under a time limit.

  47. My next few tattoo plans are: panther, skull, eagle, rose, torch. Already have a dagger, lady head, and butterfly. At what point do you have too many of the "go to" tattoos? I look forward to the blank stares/looks of confusion when people look at my tattoos and wonder why they aren't all super custom and meaningful.
