  1. This one isn't on me, it's on my Dad. However, I started an apprenticeship near the end of the summer, and this was the 50th tattoo i've done. Obviously, there are things that could be better with it, but I was honored he let me do it (and basically let me do whatever i wanted). Jay Cavna design...

  2. I was at my local tattoo shop last night getting some work done on my backpiece and got to witness an 82 year old lady accompanied by her grown children get her first and probably only tattoo. She got "DNR" in small fancy script over her heart. Turned out she has a bad ticker and wanted a Do Not Resuscitate tattoo. She took it like a champ. It was awesome!

  3. Got this little guy from Nick Rodin at Black Heart last week! Always wanted a tattoo with tattoos. We all know it, but I'll state the obvious here: great shop, great dudes, seriously great time.. I got the cute tattoo and my lady got a super tough eagle from Cody Miller, which I'll have to get a picture of once it's healed.

    LST Two Years Today!!!

It has been a blast watching the community grow, and meeting some of you in person - some of the nicest people I know for sure. It's also been really satisfying to hear the stories about our members getting on the right path and getting some top quality tattoos as a direct result of what they have learned here. That is really what our whole mission is all about. I know my list of who to get work from has changed.. Thanks to everybody who comes here and contributes!

  15. My first tattoo that i got I was 18 and it was my last name in old english across my shoulders. I figured the family couldn't get mad about that haha. My mom was all ready used to me having mohawks and dyed hair, she freaked more when i pierced my lip with a safety pin when i was 15. My grandpa was a little upset when he first saw it and my mom looked at him and said "he's still the same kid dad". Im pretty lucky to have that lady as my mom. I just got another last night and the first thing I did this morning was send her a pic of it haha

Ha- I could've sworn I put mine on here - fallingapartart : art, flowers, motorcycles, antiques, occasional pics of my ugly mug to scare people off. I still don't understand why people follow each other; for me it's good tattoos or art, people I know, or motorcycles

    Some of the worst ever.

Simple. An outhouse in the rain, with the users birchbark canoe in front of it, waiting to take them over the falls in front of it.

  34. My parents were on vacation until the day i got my appointment for my first tattoo. I was hoped they wouldn't be back till after i got the tattoo but sadly they showed up 5 minutes before i had to leave. I just told them i was going to get a tattoo and my mum fucking flipped. My dad said nothing. When i got back my mum was positively surprised and was glad that i took time to find a good artist. My dad had his camera all set up and ready to take pictures of my new tattoo, he was almost as excited as i was. They did told me that as long as i live at home i need to inform them before i get a new tattoo next time so they can adjust to the idea;)

  35. I got my first one on my 19th birthday and managed to hide it for at least 2 weeks. Then there was that morning I overslept for college and she went in to wake me up...saw it peeking out from under my T-shirt...She slapped the shit outta it (thinking it was still sore) saying "wait till I tell your Father"!! That evening at dinner my dad says "let me see your tattoo". I show him, he says "cool". Mom just rolled her eyes. No more worries after that. She still doesn't like it too much, but this little 78 year old woman did tell me recently "you know, I see so many folks around here with just awful stuff tattooed on them and I think to myself "My son's tattoos are sooooo much better"". God, She's awesome!

    Upcoming Tattoos

After being blown away by his larger scale pieces, I've decided to go with with Scott Ellis at Triple Crown for the jaguar- working on going in for the consult in the next few weeks. Sample of bad ass bigger pieces: and an awesome tiger head: Oh yeah- again, it's going on my thigh, not my back, but it's going to be big, so the back pieces were what I thought of for reference.

    Old tattoo photos

What can I say, got strung-out on ink again. Got a spot booked with Nick at noon this coming Friday, we been going back n forth by e-mail, and he found the exact sheet of flash I remembered from when Cliff Raven owned CTC. Twisted it around a bit, and should be able to do it in one sitting Friday. This is gon be a chest piece, "seated eagle" with roses and banners, all my kids names on it. In other words, fairly large. Can't say enough about Nick's work. Anyone that has any interest in traditional American-style tattooing owes themselves some time in his chair!

    Old tattoo photos

First try with photos. Hope this works... The parrot and skull with top hat are Bert Grimm. The man who had them said the parrot was done in 1980, when Mr. Grimm was 80 years old in Oregon. He also had the rose from Sailor Jerry. The snake was on a guy that came in to the shop here in Juneau that said he'd gotten it at China Sea and that it was lined by Jerry, but that it was shaded and colored by a female with him watching over her. Artist unknown on the devil head.

    Tribal tattoos

Before I say anything, I know this isn't a history lesson but I think any modern tribal discussion should start with Leo Zulueta- http://www.myspace.com/spiraltattoo Mundurucu Books does a few great but small books on tribal tattoos. http://www.mundurucu.com/books I don't have photos of 'good' tribal but places to look (in my opinion) are: Thomas Hooper - I love his heavy black Micronesian/Marquesan tattoos. - http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashooper/sets/72157623072881930/show/ Curly from oxford, UK - http://www.tattoocurly.com/tattoos.htm Jondix, Mike from Athens, Tomas Tomas and Xed le Head have added different influences and taken tribal style tattoos somewhere new and often exciting. Rory Keating does great stuff - RoryTattoo.com Jun Matsui - http://www.lost.art.br/juntattoo.htm There are a few Japanese guys doing amazing tribal style tattoos but I can't remember their names right now. I see tribal tattoos as much the same as any other style, in that of you see it executed badly enough, often enough, you'll learn to dislike it. Unlike other styles of tattooing, I think it's very difficult to find good reference for tribal tattoos as most of the history is verbal. If you need reference for Japanese tattoos, American Naval tattoos, Californian or Russian prison/gang tattoos etc, it's relatively easy to find helpful reference these days. Most of the visual tribal reference we have is recorded by western explorers. In the next couple of months I'm due to start some Marquesan style shorts on a customer of mine. I'm really looking forward to it because a) I don't do that style every day so it's a refreshing change of pace and b) His reference wasn't the same gym flyer every else brings (the one with a muscular guy stroking his abs with swirly spikes across his chest and arm).
