  6. Hey guys, I've been reading the site for a year or two now and have gotten a lot of great information here. I'm starting to get a great collection of work from some awesome artists. Recently, on kind of a whim, I got a statue of liberty tattoo. It's awesome--I love the design, composition and color. I really think it looks great. Here's a picture. My issue is that the design I chose has a globe and anchor at the bottom. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I've been worrying it's too similar to the Marine Corps logo. Now, I'm not a Marine and neither is anyone in my family. I really don't want to disrespect anyone's service. Am I over-thinking this? I'd appreciate your feedback.

  10. On the Wednesday & Thursday before last years London Tattoo convention I got tattooed on the outside of both lower legs. Nothing too large (about hand sized). On the Friday all seemed well a little swollen but nothing drastic. So Saturday came and it was off to the Tattoo convention. Had a really great day there and even got a walk up from Nick Colella. After a long day on my feet I got home I noticed my ankles felt a bit sore. Anyway when I took my trousers off I freaked out. My ankles were red raw bright red and really swollen as were my calves. A bright red rash covered both legs up to the knees. Being diabetic I nearly crapped myself. The next day there was no improvement so I took myself to the A&E of the local hospital. Anyway they were totally mystified. They gave me some anti histamine and sent me home. I ended up having to take a week off work. In May I got tattooed on the inside of my lower leg by @mario desa. Anyway when Mario showed me what he'd drawn up it was quite a bit bigger than I thought. It fitted really nice so great. Usually ,with me, about a hour or two after a getting a tattoo it starts to sting a little and then after that it starts to calm down. This was completely different. When I was on the train home it felt like Mario was still tattooing me. Taking into account my previous experience with lower leg tattoos I had taken a days holiday on the Thursday to give time for any swelling to subside. But as with the first lower leg tattoos the problems started a few days after the tattoo this time with the most excruciating pain. Come Monday I only managed a half shift at work and had to take half shift holiday on the Tuesday & Wednesday. Lower leg tattoos don’t you just love them?

I dunno about this. I revoked aftercare privileges from my wife after her first smear of A&D betrayed a complete lack of sympathy. Single people, get that back piece and then revel in your self reliance. - - - Updated - - - God, no.

  17. I wear disposable / old clothes to bed when I've got a fresh tattoo but inevitably get the kind of leakage you guys are talking about. A snapshot of what it'll be like to be an incontinent old man, perhaps. One thing about wearing clothes on a healing tattoo in a situation like that is that you can't win. Wear nothing and you leak onto stuff and wipe whatever bepanthen / goo you're using onto the sheets, yourself and the pillow. Wear clothing and there's probably less mess but there's nothing more horrific than waking up and realising whatever you wore is now partially stuck to the tattoo. Got a bad bollocking from my older brother a few years ago. I crashed on his sofa the night after getting a session on my leg done at the Family Business. Twisting and turning during the night, I ended up leaving blue streaks on the flesh-coloured sofa. They didn't come out so much.

  22. That wasn't an accident. There are more LST members in there too. It was an honour to be involved with this series. Chris Grosso is such an awesome guy who really "gets it" when it comes to tattooing and tattoo fandom. We actually missed having him around when shooting finished. Usually when someone has a camera in my face I'm glad to see them go. If we all watch these episodes online, watch the first season and tell our friends about them, maybe then the sponsors will see fit to finance more episodes in the future. Also Chris' co producer Lauren Cynamon and editor Jarad Jeter are the skilled guys who make the show immensely watchable and make Valerie and I look like coherent, interesting individuals. I'm looking forward to the rest of the episodes but I think Thom's will be something special. I liked the whole experience so much I put a sticker where I'll see it every day:

  28. Yes- every time a friend shows me an 'awesome' tattoo and I break down why it's bad, I get called a tattoo snob (not every tattoo they show me is bad, but when I say one is, tattoo snob). I get called tattoo crusader when I rail on about kitchen wizards.

  30. @Natveggie45 If you want PM me where you are at and we can talk as I may have some leads for your daughter in your area. Most my colleagues and I work from a Motivational Interviewing and Harm Reduction framework which not only has great research to support change but also change we've seen facilitated by individuals more often than not.

  31. Just personal experience here. Clean and sober 5 years earlier this month and 30 years old now. The best thing my mom ever did for me was kick me out. Oddly enough she's a school teacher too. She's been a guidance counselor at an elementary school for almost 20 years now. I spent a day in a homeless shelter and was able to get in to a rehab program the salvation army runs for homeless people. It was a bit religious for my taste, but it was free, and it really helped. If you do some digging there are actually quite a few rehab(ish) places that are basically free of charge. I wouldn't call what happened to me an ultimatum or an intervention. She came home to find me passed out drunk on the couch and when I left she called the police. She came to visit me in jail after that and told me she could get me into this rehab place if I wanted, or I was on my own. She's my biggest supporter today, and we've got a great relationship. I know it's hard, and it's a shit decision to have to make, but I don't know anyone who got clean living with mommy and daddy. It's probably happened a few times, I just don't know of any. Just know there's a world of love out there, and there is help. Welcome to Al-Anon Family Groups

  32. I was watching that show intervention, and the drug therapist said that relapse is part of recovery.I would have to agree with that for at least 50% of addicts.I used to smoke PCP everyday for years, and rob money from my brother and mother until my mom had enough and said either go to rehab,or get out of the house.I was 23yrs old at this time.I wen't to rehab, and after two days there,i called a taxi, and left the place.when i got home she said either go back to rehab,or get out of the house.well i ended up going back to rehab for 23 days, and when i got out,i was straight for 5yrs without meetings or anything, but i was so depressed,i ended up having a few beers one day. After i relapsed,i started going to meetings, and have been sober for 17yrs. Recovery is a one day at a time thing, that lasts a lifetime. The real problem is the person, not the drugs. We just try to escape ourselves through the use of drugs, because we don't like the way we feel.I would also suggest going to some Al-Anon meetings to better understand your daughter's addiction.

  33. Find an Al-Anon meeting-definitely worth checking out. I'd also make her staying in your house conditional on her attending a twelve step program. Your house, your limits and boundaries. What your daughter is going through sucks, but you have to do what's healthy and sane for yourself and the rest of the people in the house. If she can't do that, tell her she's going to have to figure something else out. As someone with experience in the area, sometimes the only way to find your bottom is when it's sitting on a curb next to all your worldly possessions.

  36. I think what this documentary is going to focus on is 'black and grey' tattooing and where it started. We have a lot of great stuff out there to watch about modern tattooing such as Tattoo Age and Gypsy Gentleman. We also have great documentaries to watch on our previous generation like the Ed Hardy and Sailor Jerry flicks, so I think it'll be nice to have a movie that helps define the birth of the fine-line black and grey style that is such a large part of our industry now. I think we'll find out that guys like Ed Hardy, Owen Jensen and Lee Roy Minugh aren't that far apart from guys like Charlie Cartwright, Freddy Negrete and Jack Rudy. I am personally really excited for this, but I guess my emotion is based on biased feelings towards my local childhood heros. Either way, I can't wait to see it.
