  2. I don't think there is an age requirement, but I do think there is a difference between people that got tattoos when they were young and impetuous, as opposed to people who apply a mature "logic" to it. I don't trust these people with all perfect tattoos, planned space, perfect balance. There is a humble aspect to the people that were into it before it grew, and back then it wasn't about what you had. You were tattooed. That's it. Now there is a fraction of the social judgement there was 20 years ago. I think this is the same conversation that could be had about the difference between when/if you started tattooing. It was a different business back then, just like we were a different clientele in those days.

Going to NYC this weekend. I have an appointment on Saturday with Bert Krak (getting something off the wall of flash) and one on Sunday with Bailey Hunter Robinson (getting a bird). Also have an appointment in September with Scott Sylvia (not sure what I am getting for this one) as well as one in October with Ron Wells (getting a skull). Glad to see LSTers getting a lot of tattoos this fall/winter.

Right? Seeing as how my fiance and I are both suckers for terrible reality television and I really enjoy Oliver Peck, we'll definitely be watching the second season of this shitshow. I was genuinely hoping that there would be more traditional tattooers this season though. I think my favorite piece from the bios was "Though he may ink others for a living, Jamie himself has only one tattoo, a black light piece located on the side of his neck." They managed to pack so many things I hate into just one sentence.

  11. "He's done the one thing that I've said for years, please don't do this. It would really upset me if you did this." If she really had been going on and on about it for years, and clearly has all kinds of weird overbearing mom issues, what choice did the poor guy have? He might not even like tattoos, either, but she practically dared him to do it. All healthy kids need to put some space between themselves and their parents at all different developmental milestones. Henry walked around with his hat on sideways for 6 months when he was 5 cause he heard Scott say that he hated it. Perfectly normal. Talking about your grown son's "lovely shoulder" and mourning the loss of control over his body? Creepy.

Firstly, I'd like to thank @CultExciter for this rad thread. Second, I have an appointment at the end of October with Josh Cruse to start my left arm sleeve. I have started the email process to get tattooed by Chad Koeplinger. I'm also planning on making the trek to Chicago early next year. Hopefully to hang out with our own @Dan S, and spend some time at CTC. I'm probably going to have to take the shitty MegaBus up there. Which I am not looking forward to.

I have a lot of stuff planned for the first week of September... I'm starting my right arm sleeve with Hugues Lauzier at Studio Imago in Montreal, which will be a Japanese-style Tibetan skull and snake on September 4th, I'm getting a fu dog on my leg from Mike Rubendall on September 7th, and I'm just waiting to hear back from Chad Koeplinger about when my appointment will be with him on either September 8th or 9th at the Montreal Tattoo Convention. I told him I was 100% willing to let him have fun and choose whatever he wants to tattoo on me. Needless to say, it's going to be a busy week but I'm crazy excited about it.

I have an appointment with Matt Arriola on Friday. We are going to work on bringing my 3/4 sleeve down to the wrist, and my wife is going to get some more work done on her tiger. I am also hoping to get down to Olympia to get some black and grey skull type shit from Marco Hernandez. I also heard a rumor that Aaron Coleman was coming back up to Yakima in September so I am going to try and get down there for a little something. I am also hoping to pay rent in September.

We needed a new thread to get back to talking about what matters. I would say this is pretty dang close to "Latest Tattoo Lowdown" so mods, feel free to adjust accordingly. Bubble-berries need not apply. What is your next planned tattoo? When? And what? I'll go first (even though most of you all know): Working on my Fenris-Wolf by Chris O'Donnell. Next appointment is at the end of September.

NYC? Shit, @Duffa, come on to Chicago! Actually, that's right in the middle of the country...EVERYONE should come to Chicago!!!! I can put up a few of you, but if any Aussies make it, I'll reserve the first two couches for them-after that, it's floor space and camping! I've got 8 acres surrounded by about 500 acres of corn, so there's plenty-o-room for a tent, and you can be at the from door of DEluxe, Taylor Street, or CTC in under 2 hours.

  28. I do think I got my first tattoo when I was 21, now I'm currently 25. If I would have gotten my first idea of a tattoo it would have been two slipknot "S" one on each of my calfs.... that would be when I was like 15, and although I can see it's a stupid tattoo now it's what I wanted at the time. So if I had it done I know I would have liked it and lived with it. - - - Updated - - - I do think I got my first tattoo when I was 21, now I'm currently 25. 31. I started putting on my own when I was like 13, tried and true needle and thread. Figured out that you could use more or less thread to vary line thickness, and more or less exposed needle to vary shading. Also got around to soldering needles in a row to shade and make staright(er) lines. Of course, I had two years of sitting in a "secure youth facility" to spend practicing! My inspirations were the older guys in the 'hood, and the joints on south State Street in the arcades, and finally, I hit the jackpot and found CLiff Raven's Chicago Tattooing Company. It was just Raven's Tattoos then, but it was a trip. Still have one piece of my original handmade tattoos left, I'll never let go of it, but the rest are all covered, and I'm getting more all the time. 38 years in the same shop...shit, where's that thread about apprenticing?!

    Upcoming Tattoos

Going in Wednesday for some work with Nick Colella at CTC. Gonna start pulling the pieces on my left arm together. Not positive yet, but I believe I'm gonna go with an old-ass piece off the wall, it's a golden dragon with a lady walking out of the center of it. Not really Japanese, but not really western-style, either...I suppose I'd have to say it's a western interpretation of an oriental dragon, probably from the late fifties/early sixties. Not sure how long we'll go, I've got one good chunk of arm left there that I'd estimate at 4 or 5 hours, so we'll see. I know, I know...I'm so boring, always the same time, same place!

    When you got tattooed

I got my first tattoo when I was 22, although I remember that I had been sitting on the idea for it since I was 16. A lot of my friends in high school has tattoos, and I accompanied many to get theirs, so honestly, by the time I got to 22 for my first one, I felt kind of old! Ha. I still like the tattoo, but if I got it now I would probably get a nicer version of it. I then waited 8 years before my second--I always knew I'd get another, but the time just never seemed right. Turning thirty somehow flipped a switch in me and since then I have not gone 6 months without getting any work done. My husband, on the other hand, got his first at 32, and a year later, he has 5 tattoos and is about to get started on a sleeve! So he is catching up. :) It has been interesting to see the difference for sure--I have had this slow learning process, whereas he dove in head first and hardcore. This is probably a generally fair description of the differences in our two personalities. I love, love, love stories about folks who get started later in life, and I hope to keep plenty of space open on myself because I like marking life transitions with tattoos and so want to be able to continue getting them in the decades to come.

    NYC-East Coast Meetup

I'm working on getting out to NYC to visit with a few friends and attend a party or two. If time were to permit, maybe get something from Mike Rubendall, although I currently only have bad tattoo ideas. (I mean, worse ideas than usual.) If I were to drag poor Scott with me, I imagine he'd want to fill up his free time applying regrets somewhere, maybe in Long Island? If we do come out, I'd love to meet some East Coast LST'ers. Oh, and @ShawnPorter, we will be in Philly at the end of Nov. if you want to grab some coffee or a good meal. Maybe someplace that serves good vegan food and yummy stuff for carnivores as well? (We have a 4 star restaurant for vegans and meat eaters called Gather here, but this is CA, and it is in Berkeley no less, but so good for our date nights!)

Oh, man. So much this. Mostly irrelevant story: A year or so ago, I had an appointment booked with him when he was guesting in DC. Then I found out he was doing a guest spot up in Toronto around the same time I was planning a trip up there, so in order to cut WAY down on travelling costs, I cancelled my first appointment and made one for his guest spot in Toronto. Which ended up getting cancelled. And that's how I ended up not getting tattooed by Deno last year.

  49. Oh how I would love to do that! I have been trying to get the hell out of the business but I keep getting more money. I would love to drop the suit and tie, I even promised myself back in my punk days that I would rather die than wear a businessman's noose around my neck, but I guess I lied to myself. I still laugh when people at work talk about all those "tattooed punks", and how they will never get a <job, girl, etc, etc>. Maybe I can do some good as a tattooed executive type, break the mold a little and open some eyes!

  50. I wouldn't worry too much. I don't think any great harm is going to happen to your tattoo if it gets a little dry. It's part of the natural healing process. I use a very small amount of Aquaphor the first few days then I switch to E45 cream. I tend to put a little bit more cream on the tattoo after it has "flaked" to counter the itchyness, caused by the tattooed area drying out. From what I've been told and through personal experience lotions do nothing to aid the healing process, your own body will take care of that part. Basically I look at a tattoo as an open wound. Now if I had an open wound due to an injury the last thing I would be doing is constantly putting lotion on it. The wound has to dry out, to a certain extent, in order to heal. Personaly I use creams and lotions to make the tattooed area feel a bit a little more comfortable during the healing process. If you are sufffering like crazy from itchyness you are probobly stuck with the stripping off every so often to put on some lotion as your clothes will absorb most of it during the day.
