Since becoming single unexpectedly, I've had a major fire under my butt to get in shape- physically and mentally. Since May 9th I've lost 45lbs. I ride my bike 20 miles a day for fun. I've radically altered my eating habits. I go to the gym every day. Instead of staying on my couch eating a bag of m&ms, I'm ziplining in the Pocono Mountains. Things like that. Instead of bitching that my life changed without my consent, I'm going to therapy to work on my noodle; make myself an even better person.9 points -
This is kinda lame, but making my 7 month old daughter laugh is my favourite thing to do right now. You know, before she hits 13 and despises her parents.6 points

i'm back! its been a while since ive had any free time to myself to be able to come back to LST, but now that im up at the cottage for the week ill have plenty of time to catch up on the stuff that ive missed! another thing i find funny is that i almost have perfect recollection of some of the threads going on here and where i want to write each of my new stories! (side note: if you knew me you'd know sometimes i cant remember my own birthday!! lol) now to write something that actually applies to this thread. i was seeing this guy a while back and i was over at this house one night. i mentioned to him that i was going to Chicago for a short trip and i said that i was also going to get tattooed. he said "what, its not enough that you could get Hepatitis here you have to go to Chicago to try and get it?" i cant even tell you how fast i left his apartment. lol! you win some and you lose some!4 points

right on. i just started running earlier this year. not up to any marathons, but it is pretty cool to run longer distances without getting tired. every time i push myself to an extra half-mile further than i've done before is pretty rewarding. years of burning my fingers and breathing in burning flux has made me try to avoid soldering ever again at all costs. hallelujah for quality pre-made needles.3 points

After getting enrolled on Friday, I came home yesterday and there was a letter giving us mortgage pre-approval. So, school and a new home in the immediate future. Good shit. I would like to extend a big thanks to this people on and that run this site. It may sound odd, because it's just a website, but I've taken a lot of inspiration from this place. I've seen a dedication and focus in the tattoo community that it such a great influence. You really can do what you put your mind to if you REALLY put your mind to it. @Jake Anderson are you Orthodox by any chance? I live in Kentucky not far from where your recent service trip was, and I know there is an Orthodox monastary close that's pretty cool.3 points -

Awesome. You'll have a leg up on all the young kids. Motivation, work ethic, and paying for your own shit tends to keep things in perspective. I went back to school in my 30s and graduated last year with my BSc. in Computing Science. Try not to get mad at the kids' sense of entitlement. They usually had me speak at orientation, because I would lay down the polite version of "Nobody owes you shit, and no one is responsible for your success but you. Your profs don't care, they are here to do research and are usually forced to teach, which many of them hate (and it shows)." But, you know...with some jokes thrown in...Ahem.2 points -

besides getting tattooed, which is also awesome but that's for a different thread. Just got back from a guest-spot at Godspeed Tattoo in Breckenridge Colorado, where everybody are the friendliest tatbros. Did a early morning/sunrise canoe trip on a mountainside lake, skated at several different skateparks, several mountain trail bike rides, camped out for a few days way high in the mountains with good friends P Wee, Miho, and Joel Long, did some 4 wheeling in a jeep in same area, and had a campfire drawing session with P Wee & Joel. Can't wait to go back.1 point

Relationships and tattoos

Check this out, my wife is going to a bachelorette type party for one of her co workers, but only four girls total including bride. They decided that part of the party will be for all of them to get tattooed. My wife and her friend Nicole have a handful of tattoos each, the other girl shayla has a couple poorly done tattoos from vegas and the bride has no tattoos. At first my wife and Nicole suggested our shop, because I work there and they have both been tattooed there many times and I wasn't crazy about the idea because trying to get them all tattooed in one afternoon could be a task, seeing as the one girl hasn;t been tattooed before and the other girl fancy's herself a bit of an artist and they all want different things and trying to get them all to stop in for a consult. But ultimately I agreed to make it happen, after all I had almost a month to get their ideas together and get organized. Fast forward a week, they decide they want it to be a true girls night out, and want to find a shop with some ladies that can tattoo them. Now my first thought is that I dodged that bullet, but after I thought for a minute there is only a few really good female tattooers in town and finding a shop for them that has two good female tattooers available on somewhat short notice is more of a task then just doing the tattoos. Making one tattooer do four custom basically walk in tattoos would not only take twice as long, and it's still going to be a tattoo shop not a day spa just because a women is tattooing you. At first my wife didn't believe me and told me I have issues against women, so I had to show her what I was talking about. I went through about 20 shops web sites and showed her some of the stuff people are passing off as tattoos, then pulled up some of the portfolios of good women tattooers in town and some other examples of good tattoos in general. Also I told her that some of these women are in high demand and might not be available or interested in doing something like this on semi short notice, so they should keep their options open if they couldn't book with the women I suggested. I also told her that I wouldn't be too happy if she got a substandard tattoo just because she had to get tattooed by a woman, mostly because I just don't want to give hacks our money, especially when I know so many good tattooers. Her response to me was, "well you go to businesses run by Mexicans to support Mexicans and Latinos.", my response "We are not talking about Carne Asada here." By the end of the conversation I think everyone got what I was saying and understood that I just want them to get good tattoos but it was quite exhausting in the process.1 point -

We are on a 2-week vacation to see family and friends on the east coast. A highlight was staying a night at our friend's organic dairy farm in northern VT where I had stored 3 boxes of photos before moving to Los Angeles in '98. Our 4 year old got to see her first clear, dark nighttime sky full of stars, made her first s'more at a campfire, and saw her first herd of cattle up close, in-person. While my friend's sister was singing and playing guitar by the fire, Stella (my daughter) said, "This is the best song ever. This song is making me want another s'more." Haha. Good times. PS-another awesome thing I just did was to buy an LST t-shirt!1 point -
ThaliaCamille, sounds super fun nevertheless! I love the technicality of printmaking precisely because even if my artistic abilities are whatever, the whole process of doing something so mechanical is still so satisfying. It sounds cool. And AlannaCA, a good friend of mine did that 5k and it seems awesome--the photos on Facebook of her covered head to toe in mud were epic.1 point

i took the week off to go to the cottage and breath some fresh air and relax. recently i did the Warrior dash(5km mud race with obstacles) it was so amazing and im hooked! i want to eventually work my way up to Tough Mudder! im new to running-been doing it for fun for the last year- and im training pretty hard for a half marathon coming up this fall! oh and how could i forget in a couple weeks in going skydiving!! its easy to back out of something big like this but im organizing a group to go with and they will keep me from backing out! hahahaha1 point

ThaliaCamille, I am super jealous! I got to use a hundred year old press (that was historically significant to local printing) while doing litho last year, and I thought that was cool. How does it run? And Posterboy, congrats on going back to school! Speaking as a prof, I love students who have returned (and teach many of them at my university) as, like PhilB said, y'all tend to be more motivated, less whiny and entitled, and get shit done. I hope it's a super rewarding experience, and PhilB, I promise that not all profs hate teaching! This is probably not that awesome to normal people, but my big thing this summer has been finally learning how to drive, at the tender age of 31. This is what happens when you grow up somewhere with great public transit. I am taking my exam next week and while I feel really proud of how confident and competent I've gotten behind the wheel, I am nervous as all hell. (I will admit that part of the motivation for finally going for it, though, is to be able to share the driving with my dude on upcoming tattoo-related road trips.)1 point

I got this last night. I swore I was not getting any more tattoos before I finished the ROA back piece, but dammit! this was just too good to pass up on. It sprang from an idea I had about funny stuff you could get tattooed. It was the most fun time I've ever had getting tattooed. There were lot's of funny, raunchy stories told while this was done. Artwork and tattoo were done by Paul Pearson at Tried & True Tattoo in Smyrna Tn. MEAT CURTAINS!!! On my thigh.1 point

I never made the connection until now, but I did the same thing. After getting my first 2 tattoos I started eating bettter so that I could drop a few kilos and not be embarrassed to take my shirt off in public. Although I was never fat (just had love handles) so I can't say I know how some of the people in this thread really feel. In short: get tattoos if you want to lose weight?1 point

Yeah.....what people pay is their business! I have put out some serious money to add some quality pieces over the years and I have never thought twice about it if it was an artist I really wanted something from! If I feel it's not worth it to me to pay what someone has quoted me then I just don't get tattooed by that person.....and that has only happened one time so far! I never tell someone what I have paid for a tattoo......it's really none of their business and I think it is honestly rude to ask someone!1 point -
How to keep tattoos hydrated!
pintindola reacted to jade1955 for a topic
I wouldn't worry too much. I don't think any great harm is going to happen to your tattoo if it gets a little dry. It's part of the natural healing process. I use a very small amount of Aquaphor the first few days then I switch to E45 cream. I tend to put a little bit more cream on the tattoo after it has "flaked" to counter the itchyness, caused by the tattooed area drying out. From what I've been told and through personal experience lotions do nothing to aid the healing process, your own body will take care of that part. Basically I look at a tattoo as an open wound. Now if I had an open wound due to an injury the last thing I would be doing is constantly putting lotion on it. The wound has to dry out, to a certain extent, in order to heal. Personaly I use creams and lotions to make the tattooed area feel a bit a little more comfortable during the healing process. If you are sufffering like crazy from itchyness you are probobly stuck with the stripping off every so often to put on some lotion as your clothes will absorb most of it during the day.1 point -
