  4. I got this last night. I swore I was not getting any more tattoos before I finished the ROA back piece, but dammit! this was just too good to pass up on. It sprang from an idea I had about funny stuff you could get tattooed. It was the most fun time I've ever had getting tattooed. There were lot's of funny, raunchy stories told while this was done. Artwork and tattoo were done by Paul Pearson at Tried & True Tattoo in Smyrna Tn. MEAT CURTAINS!!! On my thigh.

    hardest artist to book

I got a full sleeve done around some existing pieces by Miles Maniaci when he was at CTC, maybe ten years ago. I walked in thinking I'd have Dale Grande do it, but he had stopped tattooing regularly and said "I've got thie amazing young guy working here now, and I think he'd go nuts on this". Excellent choice. Miles did a tracing of my arm, took the plates I brought in with the specific elements I wanted incorporatd in it, and called me back in a few weeks and asked me to come in and take a look. I did, and ended up having the wholepiece outlined that evening. Every two weeks we did another chunk, up to about six hours, until it was finished. He told me a flat rate-which was far less than anything being talked about here, but also was ten years ago. I apid it as we went, and made sure to leave a good tip at every session. Miles left CTC, went to Taylor Street Tattoo, and I heard from people trying to book work from him that he had a one-year waiting list. Wow. Now he works at Deluxe, and I never have heard anything but the highest praise for his work. Don't know if he's still booked out like that, cause I'm still hung-up on CTC. And that's a bitch! Shit, I had to wait two day to get Nick Colella to work on me once-it was turrible! I think way too much of what is going on now in parts of the tattoing world is celebrity/media driven, and that has resultied, IMHO, in inflated prices, long waits, and tattooers who are competent being billed as rock-stars. Of course, there are the genuine artists - tattooists - who are worth waiting for, but I think not that many. .02

  16. Man, everybody already used my smart-ass answers but the Greg Irons quip was funnier than I could have come up with. But back to the original question. This is one of the newer approaches to tattooing that makes me slightly uncomfortable to be honest. Myself and a few tattooers I know and work with have noticed the trend of customers finding a sense of pride in how long they had to wait for their tattoo. As if that makes the tattoo more worthwhile. With some of the currently living/working tattooers mentioned in this thread, I personally know people (not even on the internet) that have tattoos from all of them. Filip, Horiyoshi III, Shige and Mike Rubendall. Yeah, they had to wait a little while for some of them but not as long as you'd think for others. Mike Roper is a different situation because he makes it deliberately difficult to get in touch with him, which answers the question posed above. But that wasn't really the question that was asked and it's rarely the question that gets asked. The question, or at least the implication, is "who has the longest waiting list' or "who has appointments booked furthest into the future". If I were to be snarky "who gives me the most bragging rights". For me the hardest people to get a tattoo from are the tattooers who are located furthest away from me. The ones where I have to get off my ass and do something about it. Time is easier to overcome than distance although patience is a different matter. It astonishes me that people call our shop from the outskirts of the city expecting us to change the way we work because they are catching a train to get here. On the other hand, we are humbled and honoured by the people who cross seas and continents to get tattooed regularly with us. But that's aside from the issue. Why is it a trend that makes me uncomfortable? Because I've heard people brag about how long they had to wait for 'x' artist and wear that information like a badge of honour. It feels almost as distasteful as bragging about who charges the most. Yeah, tattoos are for tough guys and tough buys like to brag and maybe that seems harmless, but it makes me uncomfortable and I have trouble clearly explaining why. Maybe it's because it's a phenomenon spurred on by the internet and the gossipy world of hearsay. Nobody calls and checks with the artists or shops they want to get tattooed at. Nobody travels down to the shop to ask the question. They just ask random strangers on the internet who have a lot of time on their hands and like to talk about something they know nothing about. Then the reality gets lost or twisted and in the end the real information is lost. I see this a lot with regards to the shop I work at. Forums are (or certainly used to be) bursting with 'facts' about how much we charge, how long we take, how far 'x' and 'y' are booked or how long their waiting lists are. Nobody calls the shop to ask and nobody suggests that the person calls to ask. I know that happens with a lot of things but it seems like this is starting to have a real-world effect, however small. People who wanted tattoos that we would love to do heard that we wouldn't tattoo them at our shop because we were so cool and busy and booked up for decades and rolling around in money 'n' bitches or something. We've heard of this a few times and it seems to be happening more. Yeah, we're busy, you may have to wait a little, maybe not. If someone has contact information, especially a phone number on their website it means that they want you to call. I'm not really going to touch on the tone of the "are they a fad or are they really worth it?" comment, except to say that if you have to ask, the answer is "no". Sorry to jump on this fun thread with a rant. I look forward to more witty quips.

    Hey all!

Hey, I'm Persephone (although I answer to a lot of things, from the first name internetty people will never freakin' pry out of me--not a fan--right down to "hey, chick!" just as long as you make it clear which chick you're talking to). I clearly suck at introductions, but there it is. I'm a fledgling collector from Central Arkansas, which is less painful than some might assume. I have two tattoos: one I decided to get on a whim for my 20th birthday (almost exactly five years ago) at the cheapest shop in town, which will be covered by the back piece I'm starting next month, and one by the artist who will be tattooing said back piece, which not only renewed my desire to wear as much incredible art as possible, but also reminded me how much I love visual art in general. I have a few more big pieces conceptualized and plan to travel for more work when my broke-student budget allows. The internet led me here a few times before I joined and a few more times before my desire to talk tattoos overwhelmed my desire to not talk to anyone, ever. So, yeah. Hi.

  18. it's not that it's a poorly done tattoo, but it's something that i definitely would not get at this point in time if i could get a redo. it was my second tattoo, so i don't get bummed about it. - - - Updated - - - and to be honest, brad fink wasn't really a cool dude. he was kind of a prick. he made me bring in a picture that he could retrace, pretty much made me feel like a poser because i didn't have any tattoos. fuck that shit.

  32. I bitch at my employees all the time about their tattoos, and tell them to cover them up! Hell...they're both my sons, and they've gotten so much beautiful work by Nick Colella that it's a shame to see them pull up in front of our office on their bikes with no shirts on and the sun beating on them.

    The ole spider webs

Very true. If you take a squint at some of the pix I posted from the old Easyriders Tattoo book, you'll see some real nice jailhouse...pretty easy to see the difference. It's a dead-issue, but to me a guy with webs or walls or any of the other tried-and-true prison work, all done outside and looking clean and shiny, is kinda like the hero of the tune "Pretty Fly (for a White guy)" by Offspring. Strictly my personal opinion.

  35. I think the wrap method is good for an experienced tattoo collector. certainly not for the average one. one of my artists recommended the method to me about 6 years ago and I have been using it since. I have never healed better. I have very sensitive skin in general, so many lotions can cause issue for me while healing. The wrap method allows my body to heal itself without any outside irritants. I love it.

  36. I would think that anyone that would question the spider-web/other prison tattoos would probably realize the difference between jailhouse style and one done by a pro. I've seen a bunch of jailhouse stuff and it has a very particular look to it, especially the ink.

Seems that Photobucket doesn't like some of thse old pix I've been putting up, don't know if someone complained, or they just have some old bluenose that sniffs through everyone's stuff to find a pic of a nipple, but anyhow, here are retouched pix to replace those that have been, or may be, taken down by PB. Sorry if they make some duplicates, but if they are still there in a few weeks, or whenever, hey, take 'em down!

If he wasn't fighting a case right now, I'd put up some pics of one of my Brothers work. Castles with turrets for years, webs around his elbows n armpits, walls with searchlights, the whole nine-yards. Boy did ten the hard way in the 'ville here in Illinois. Not a nice place.

  46. My girlfriend and I were eating at a restaurant in the downtown area of our town a week or two ago, and we ended up getting seated directly next to the floor to ceiling window that looked out onto the sidewalk. A family stopped right outside and there was a little dude--probably 7 or 8--who was absolutely fascinated by my tattoos. He stood there staring open mouthed and at one point grabbed his sister to point and show her. It was really cute...he clearly didn't realize that we could see him too, as after a minute or two we finally laughed and waved to him, at which point he ran and hid behind his parents. Kids are the best.

  49. I've got a pair of straight edge praying hands on my leg, and usually get asked about them by little kids at the diving board in the summers. trying to figure out an answer the first time or two took a minute. As for awful slang terms, some dude tried hitting on a chick I work with by saying something to the effect of "Yo girl, you inky!" It didn't work out.

  50. i've hung out with mike before, am a fan of his graffiti and drawings, have nothing against the guy, but...his tattoos are awful. his style doesn't translate well to the body at all and he has no real concept of tattoo design and it seems no intention of learning how to correctly design tattoos and execute them well. it seems that the main reason people want tattoos from him is they are fans of his other artwork. you're better off buying a print or drawing i think. i also read that interview where he says flat-out that the clothing label pays him more so he quit tattooing. pretty fucking lame. but, to each their own. we all pay our own bills in the end.
