  2. i didnt read the article but heres m2c. by nature pastel colors fade quickly do to exposure to light. so it stands to reason that that would happen when you put them into the skin. i also do believe as i said in a different thread that the technical ability of the person putting them in comes into play a great deal. but in the end all tattoos will change, some will spread some will fade. to what level, i believe really depends on how a persons body deals with the ink and the technician applying the ink. ultimately if the client is happy and business is good then its a success. even the people who have bad tattoos that love them, see a great tattoo in their head. figuring out what tattoos are better than others is a moot point. as tattooers we all pretty much are on the same grind so what difference does it really make. as a collector that loves their tattoos what difference does it make if another collector doesnt.

  4. I got this last night. I swore I was not getting any more tattoos before I finished the ROA back piece, but dammit! this was just too good to pass up on. It sprang from an idea I had about funny stuff you could get tattooed. It was the most fun time I've ever had getting tattooed. There were lot's of funny, raunchy stories told while this was done. Artwork and tattoo were done by Paul Pearson at Tried & True Tattoo in Smyrna Tn. MEAT CURTAINS!!! On my thigh.

  6. Don't wait for a walk up, chances are he'll be booked. go on Inksmith & Rogers Tattoo and get the number for the location on 3rd st. He's there almost every day noon till 9pm. also keep forgetting to mention Mike is back tattooing now full time ! Fuck a broken arm! He offered to finish my back as soon as two days from when I saw him, so it seems that his schedule isn't too crazy again. Get in while you can cause normally it's a two month-ish wait.

  10. TAM issue with Gogue interview has an intersting little blurb about this... 5 year tats bro. he says himself that he knows some of his work wont last too long. he says he has a guilty conscience because he knows that some of it just falls apart in a few years. he knows that people are just wowed by the little tricks that make it look neat. for a few years. i could get a new sleeve every 5 or 10 yers!!

  14. Great comic. Agreed. I've gotten five tattoos including my first since last July, but that's nothing compared to some of the guys on here. Also, every time I go somewhere and don't tell my mom where I am going, she assumes I am getting a tattoo.

  20. There's a push for SUPER conceptual 'old timey' stuff so they can 'out oldschool' each other. Some of the stuff, by well respected tattooers, looks to me like a five year old drew it. I mean, whatever folks want to get is fine by me, but until people start calling it out.... it's only going to get worse.

  22. Any time someone approaches me to design a tattoo for them (which is not often), I offer them their idea as a painting and the outline on tracing paper. I then charge them what I would for a regular piece of art (5x7-$50, 8x10-$75, 11x14-$120). I also inform them that a decent tattooer is going to redraw what I just sold them, so be ready for that because it's part of the tattoo process. I need to find one of these people throwing around $500.

  27. I never made the connection until now, but I did the same thing. After getting my first 2 tattoos I started eating bettter so that I could drop a few kilos and not be embarrassed to take my shirt off in public. Although I was never fat (just had love handles) so I can't say I know how some of the people in this thread really feel. In short: get tattoos if you want to lose weight?

I thought that was good but I also read and liked another article he wrote called Haters in which makes a different point....about there being room for traditional and realism and how people need to chill out with their criticisms: http://tattooartistmagazineblog.com/2012/01/06/dan-henk-tattoos-tattoo-artist-magazine-blog-haters/

Seems that Photobucket doesn't like some of thse old pix I've been putting up, don't know if someone complained, or they just have some old bluenose that sniffs through everyone's stuff to find a pic of a nipple, but anyhow, here are retouched pix to replace those that have been, or may be, taken down by PB. Sorry if they make some duplicates, but if they are still there in a few weeks, or whenever, hey, take 'em down!

  31. I'm a fat woman covered in tattoos. I think if you want to get tattooed do it. Who cares what other people think anyway? My friend, and tattoo artist Kristel Oreto and I have started a page dedicated to fat women with tattoos. We are just as awesome as any other woman with tattoos. Not to mention, I think my tattoos make me so much more comfortable with my body. Or at least I feel better about myself. :)

    The ole spider webs

Hey, I'm old, so I've got old-skool (did I just piss someone off with that k?) about things...times have changed so much in the last few decades, and so much has found it's way into the popular culture, that I doubt work like that would cause you any hassle. Unless you do it with a machine made from a tape-player and a bic pen, and use india ink!!!

  38. New here; this is what I'm working on now. They're all tributes to my family. ladybug for my daughter: ship for my son: anchor for my wife: rose for my mom: wrenches and socket for my dad: diamond for my brother: heart for lost loved ones: Outlines took two sessions, and I'll start filling color on August 9. Eventually it'll be a full sleeve, but am leaving the area near my shoulder open for the time being to allow pieces to be added to it. Thanks for looking!

  40. Alright, I don't know how many of you have met my husband but he's a big guy. I'm not going to post his weight because I don't think he'd want me to. I also was at a shop this weekend with a tattooer who's even bigger than my guy, and we were all showing each other out tattoos, so lots of shirts offness. Both of them have amazing tattoos by some of the best tattooers around. Both of them get to have these huge tattoos that I could never because they literally would not fit on my body at that size. And man, I sure am jealous! I don't know how many times I've said the phrase "Sometimes I wish I was fat so I could get more/bigger tattoos". Like some of the other commenters, I also feel like tattooing can help you love the 'ugly' parts of your body. I may not be fat but we've all got parts we don't like on us. Remember even super models are photoshopped. As far as actually putting a tattoo on a bigger person, it seems like it can be in places more difficult and in other places pretty easy. Stretch marks are harder to tattoo, but if you go to someone who's comfortable doing it and has done it before, you should have no issues once the tattoo is healed. They tend to puff up worse than normal skin and the needle can get snagged on the edge of a stretch mark while being tattooed, but like I said, if they know what they're doing, that won't happen and your tattoo will be as nice and on any other person. I know a chick who weighed over 300 lbs at her heaviest. She is very heavily tattooed, I'm talking full solid jap style sleeves, legs pretty much covered and a few things on her torso. Over the course of about a year she lost at least 150 lbs. Her tattoos still look good, you can't really tell that they've shrunk unless you knew her before.

  41. I'm 5'11'' about 320lbs and i'm still sexy. But i do have those stretch marks on my stomach, and love handles on the sides.I probably won't get tattooed on that area until i drop 40-50lbs.The last tattoo i got was on the inside of my upper arm where i have the meat hooks, and i had to get the tattoo in closer where the skin doesn't hang so much. I did see a big girl on the boardwalk yesterday, and she had pink hair, and some tattoos, and it enhanced her sexiness.

  43. I can speak from personal experience on this subject. Over the years my weight ballooned to 17stone (238 lb.). I'm around 5ft 6". Didn't stop me getting tattooed in fact it made me feel different about my body. I was transformed from a fat bastard with a couple of tattoos to a fat bastard with a lot of nice tattoos. Great. However due to my size I did feel that getting a nice tattoo on my ribs was out of the question. The change in my attitude towards my body has made me think more about the obvious health issues and after spending so much time under the needle I thought it would be a bit of a pisser to bow out early. So I lost around 56lbs and I got my rib tattoo. I've still got a little way to go and carrying all that excess weight has left me with a bad back, knees, type 2 diabetes and stretch marks (those areas I wouldn't get tattooed although I do know a tattooer who enjoys whip-shading stretch marks as he has a sticker by his work station stating so). My only advise would be to choose a good tattooer, take advantage what you've got and get something a decent size. As for what other people think, fuck em.

  44. Totally cool. I hope you didn't feel like I was attacking you in any way, it was not my intention. I liked what you had to say and I would never bring any negativity to this forum. You're correct about the tattoos not being the best on the tv shows. Some of the clients they would give us were very hard to work with and wanted really odd tattoos. The phrase "polishing a turd" word come to mind often... It tested ones patience.

  45. First thing I would do is fine someone who you vibe with more to do the rest of your arm. I think you might have a better idea what good filler would be once you know what else the roses will be next to. The use of space in this tattoo certainly leaves something to be desired, so I can see what you are saying. Hopefully whoever you pick can figure out something cool to tie the whole arm together.

    Lady Heads

I'm kind of collecting lady heads from different artists. As it's been mentioned by others, I love the fact that such a classic design can be interpreted so differently person to person. I have 4 so far. Here are 2, one of them is the classic Bob Wicks flash - both by Matty D'Arienzo (both taken right after). The other 2 are a girl from valerie vargas and a girl head/butterfly from El Bara. On my list for others are steve boltz, jordan teear, virginia elwood, nick collela, pretty much anyone at spider murphys (that's a hell of a lot of travelling though so it'll take a while!)

  48. i absolutely know what you mean. i personally dont think that one style of tattooing is better than any other. when you get tattooed by someone who is an excellent technician your getting the best you can get and at the end of the day the body takes its toll on the tattoo. i understand all the arguments about this vs that but it doesnt matter to me. color stuff falls out, bold black spreads shits gonna change.
    1 point
  49. I am not a fan of any of the color outlines or realism stuff and I agree with everything that people say. If I have an eagle tattoo you should be able to tell what it is from ten feet away and it shouldn't matter if it's twenty years old. That is not to say it is going to look as good as the day I got it, but it still should be recognizable. But another thing I see that I would almost equate with it is the dumbing down of traditional work. Elongated panther heads without any definition in the jawbone that look like they would probably lick you to death before they attacked you and blocky eagles with not enough feathers to take flight. Clearly it's a traditional tattoo and nobody is asking for a portrait of said animal but just because it's a traditional tattoo doesn't mean it shouldn't be a good drawing. I think I would rather pick an eagle out of the Rollo sketchbook than have a custom drawing put on me that wasn't up to snuff. One argument would be that the old school way you paint the flash a little sloppy and clean up the design when you tattoo it, but I don't see that happening these days. This stuff is getting tattooed just as it's painted. I worked with a guy for awhile, had been tattooing for a few years but never really learned how to do it the right way. I would look at him draw and some of the stuff was horrible. I would steer him towards using reference material, but he was set on drawing everything from his own head. It just seems like if you draw something with no frame of reference of what it supposed to look like it's bound to end up a little wonky. There are guys who can do it, but only after years and years of drawing certain things in the proper way. I have a file of stencils at the shop I saved of stuff I couldn't believe he put on people. I am not saying this is what's happening but if it is we are all doomed. Eventually enough people got on his case and he came around and his tattoos are looking better (not amazing by any means). I am not trying to bust people's balls or call out names or dwell on the negative. There are plenty of people doing great traditional work and clearly this is not about them. Maybe I am just over thinking things, I mean it's just a tattoo. I remember the story where Terry Tweed sent someone home for the day, well actually sent him to the zoo, because he put a green eye in the eagle tattoo he did that day. Clearly this is a slight overreaction, but I think he made his point and that was at least 15 years ago.
