I know I'm a couple pages behind on the response, but I was stoked to log in and see the Carmichael and Leu tattoos on the same page. Can we get less scratcher bullshit/ego stroking/personal validation threads and more awesome tattoos like these instead? Please and thank you.

  6. I was really (really) fortunate to get a little somethin' on Saturday from Matt Cunnington at Westside Tattoo - Professional Services - Brisbane, QLD | Facebook BUT I don't have any decent pics yet, and will probably have to wait for it to settle. When I do have pics they will be shared of course, as well as the cool story to go with it

  8. Found a short article about Horitomo's involvement in designing the tattoos for the characters in the Yakuza video game series. Has anyone played any of these games? Horitomo-san began tattooing in 1992, although at the time he was not versed in the art of traditional Japanese tattooing. Instead, he focused his studies on the western style of tattoo artistry at a street tattoo studio. At that time studios which advertised their services openly on the streets of Japan were a real rarity. Following his initial studies, Horitomo-san went on to work at various tattoo studios based in Tokyo and Osaka. In the meantime, he was also actively taking part in various tattoo conventions, including shows in Amsterdam and Spain. In 2001, he finally began to learn traditional Japanese tattooing from a master of the style. Four years later, Kikuchi-san (producer of the Yakuza series), saw some of Horitomo-san’s work in a magazine which featured several of the best traditional Japanese tattoo artists of the time. He was impressed by what he saw and decided to get in touch with Horitomo-san at his workplace in Yokohama and ask him to be a part of the team for the first Yakuza game. He has continued his relationship with the team ever since that time.

  13. I cam across TattooDonkey.com like 6 months ago when I got a notification about some images being posted elsewhere on the international web.... So, I check it out, ok... NBD just a few photos, then... I notice you can also down load this shit... Then it wasn't until yesterday that Eric Perfect posted some shit up about him having flash posted there and being sold in downloads, only catch is, he didn't post the pics, nor authorize it, or consent.... Three different lawyers and last night I was like ahh, still, even though the lawyers are like it's not worth worrying about, I was freaking out... Our Art work literally is what feeds, clothes, and shelters us... And we bust ass... So this was like another shit nail in the coffin. And this has been the case with not only FLASH, but Fine Art Print Reproductions, Photos of Originals, and photos of tattoos and tattoos being done, as well as crap drawings, and then the creepy family pics people are finding that this site, went in and harvested and downloaded all these pics with noe ones consent or knowing, immediately turnaround upload and post to their site with a high resolution download that anyone can buy take and use, fuck the originator of said image right?...And they did this and had staff reupload, and they knew all along that they had not notified anyone about this... But by posting on their site that is was user created shared database, is completely fraudulent... BUSTED. If you have time, go to that site.... Start keywording any work you may have put online, had someone else put in a blog, etc,,, last name suffices usually... Copy and pastse all this stuff together and then you will need to submit it all back to the company and do it fast before they take everyone shit down so they can claim it was just pulled we had no idea.... I even saw images that had the Last Sparrow Tattoo mark on it, which means they came to this site, and harvested everyones photos... Ours includes... So... Tattoo Donkey and something like this: To: [email protected] From: (YOUR NAME) and EMAIL Subject: DMCA notice, site stealing major content CC: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] First of all, if you even have lawyers, you should have been told that you do not qualify for "safe harbor" protection under the DMCA. Your site "tattoodonkey.com" is posting thousands of photos of other people and other people's art without any permission, and it is very obvious that you are wholly aware of this. You are not operating in good faith and can not hide behind the DMCA. What are you doing is wholly illegal under US and International law. You surely know that, and your "disclaimer" in no way protects you. Because you are charging for these photos and also filing them under my and other people's trademarks, you are putting yourself up for a great many damages. You are using many pictures stolen without permission of me, from my website, and I would wager that not even one percent of the photos you are using are legal. In fact, I would go so far as to say that every single image on the site is stolen. Your site actually came to my attention because of the vast number of tattoo artists upset at the thefts of their photos and designs. There are few well-known -- or even lesser known -- artists who won't find their material stolen on your site. The following images, and I suspect many others that I have not found, are mine and I insist that they are removed immediately. Attach list of links to images not rightfully posted that belong to you... then send it off... Ahh, I can sleep better tonight, this stuff was fucking with me hard last night.

I think they're referring more to the rise of fine line realism in tattooing vs. hard outline traditional. I like my black and gray somewhere in the middle.

    Hey there...

...been lurking for a while, so I guess it was time to do it right and register. 29, male, raised on punk rock and weirdness, lived on different sides of the Atlantic and moved around a lot. I'm into reading and writing, looking at and drawing stuff, vinyl, and obviously tattoos, preferably bold traditional-inspired work, but I can appreciate different styles. So, yeah, hi!

  23. Got tattooed today by Doc Price in Plymouth, UK. Doc has been tattooing for over 50 years. A truly lovely man. It was a real privilege to listen to Doc telling some tales about his time as a tattooer. There can’t be many places where you can get a tattoo while sitting only three feet away from an original Paul Rogers Tattoo machine displayed on the wall.

  24. Ok, @Brian Wermund, it seems silly to send you the link to the newbie guidelines since I'd be willing to bet you crafted this thread to specifically skirt all the rules about posting. But here it is: Last Sparrow Tattoo - Newbie Guidelines Not sure if you've received any PMs from the other mods on here but I'd expect one sooner rather than later. LST is a place to learn and it is a place to ask questions. It is not a place to post (not so) thinly veiled attempts to pat yourself on the back for tattooing out of your house and getting thrown out of a shop and pretending to be butthurt when strangers on the internet tell you you're wrong. I'm sure the experience won't change a thing. Anyway, I know stirring shit up online is fun in between appointments at the kitchen table, but maybe instead you can use that time to get your hands on some books and magazines or even take a look around the site. Through a little research you might notice that most people who were relegated to tattooing at home were either 15 or shortly thereafter were able to land a proper apprenticeship where they said, "Holy shit, thank god I'm on the right track." I've wasted way too much time on this response. And probably been way too nice. Just do us all a favor and stop trolling for a reaction. - - - Updated - - - Also, go get tattooed. At a shop.

  26. First of all, the guy takes me in early for my appointment. WTF? Then he has the nerve to have my tattoo already drawn up and looking perfect. The SOB even takes the time to work with me on size and placement. While he's tattooing me, he has a great conversation with my wife and treats her super nicely. Fucking unbelievable. He takes his time and gives me a gorgeous new tattoo, all the while acting like a consummate professional. Something has to be done about this guy. He's too nice, too professional, and too damn good.

I don't care how Kat Von D got anywhere. But I would imagine it might have had something to being married (formerly) to Oliver Peck and being an attention whore.

    Publicists?

Most tattooers are their own publicist. I can understand to some degree looking to market yourself better. I think the people who do good work deserve all the credit they get, and for the most part well know tattooers certainly are putting out quality work, but we all know how many people are putting out phenomenal work and no one knows their names. Being in the right book, or at the right convention, doesn't take the place of years of hard work, but a few friends in the right places certainly doesn't hurt. .That being said, I only know of one guy with a publicist and it didn't surprise me a bit when i heard he had one if that makes sense.

  30. thanks a lot, dude. i've been slowly transcribing another interview i did at the roc city convention. i think it's the best one i've done thus far. hopefully, i'll be posting that within the next week or so. there's a ton of posts on my blog, so it may be hard to go back and lurk it, but i've posted about times that i've gotten tattooed since the inception. i need to do a better job of organizing it, but i have a hard time not being a lazy piece of shit after i get home from work. kev, i believe i posted a pic of your peacock last week. it was excellent. post that shit again. i'm gonna check to see if i posted it, and if not, i'll make sure i do.

I'm stealing these from a friend on facebook, too good not to post here.. They are on his granddad who got them from Paul Rogers and R.L. Connelly (not sure who did which) sometime between 1952-53 in Jacksonville, NC. This is after 50 years of working in construction.

  44. I've had people move in restaurants in Eastern Europe to get away from me, especially before most of my "jailhouse"-type work was covered. In Germany, they look at you like you are a criminal...that's changing, but slowly. Same in Poland and Checkai. Canada? I don't go there. I got popped with a couple joints in Chicago in 1973, and unless I pay the Kanadian government $5K U.S. to be "rehabilitated", they won't let me in. Fuck 'em. In S.E. Asia, I've gottem mostly curiousity. In Thailand and Vietnam, I've had people come up to me on the street, start a crowd scene, cause they wanted to see my work, touch it to make sure it's real, all of that. No hostility whatsoever, just curiousity. Well, there COULD have been some hostility from a coupla NVA types, but they didn't find any of the tattoos they were looking for. Mexico and South America, I am in Mexico usually a few times a year, but not this last year. I have never had a problem because of tattoos, never. Gang stuff is pretty specific, so while some people may think you're a bit shady, unless you're rocking SUR-13 or something akin to that, they won't think you're a banger. I've been from there on down to Columbia, and pretty much the same all over, no hassle unless you have actual gang work. You may get the fish-eye from the respectable types, but shit, I get that in Chicago! I've actually gotten breezed through more checkpoints in America with "NICE WORK" ringing in my ears than anything else. Hey-you got mostly young-type people working the checkpoints, only stands to reason some of 'em will be down with tattooing.

    Old tattoo photos

Not photos per se but images from a book from 1671 (thats pretty old. My wife is an early modern literature nerd and found these photos on a blog (resobscura.blogspot.co.uk). THey come from an article on Brazilians by some Dutch dude: (Following text and photos nicked from said blog so not mine). "Europeans were also fascinated and fearful of the "monstrous" forms of indigenous Brazilians themselves. Although most accounts remarked upon the good health, longevity and physique of Tupí Indians and other indigenous societies in Brazil (probably a reflection more of the poor health and diet of the European mariners than anything else), others focused on their tendency toward body-modification. The most entertaining and strange European take on piercing and tattooing I have been able to find is John Bulwer's fantastically titled Anthropometamorphosis: Man Transform’d, or the Artificial Changeling. Historically presented, in the mad and cruel Gallantry, foolish Bravery, ridiculous Beauty, filthy Fineness, and loathesome Loveliness of most Nations, fashioning & altering their Bodies from the Mould intended by Nature. With a Vindication of the Regular Beauty and Honesty of Nature, and an Appendix of the Pedigree of the English Gallant. (London: J. Hardesty, 1650). (I wrote about this a bit in an earlier post). Below he describes how "the Brasileans... are pricked within the flesh" with paint." "Bulwer's title page takes this a step further, showing an Amerindian figure sporting some truly remarkable tattoos! The European woman with facial tattoos to the figure's left highlights Bulwer's concern that this "barbarous" custom would become fashionable with his own countrymen (he was right, but it would take another three hundred years or so to really catch on, and the whole "face on a butt" tattoo fad seems to still lie in the future)." Interesting eh?
