2. Been a while since I last posted, but yesterday I finally, finally, finally got to start my ROA backpiece. First session finished and the main part of the outline is done! I meant to get started on this tattoo at the 1st of April, but got sidelined with some back and hip issues. It's a crappy cellphone pic and I wasn't exactly standing up straight, but you can get the general jest of it. The ribs and lower back portion hurt like Hell, but it was well worth it. I'm pretty stoked about it. Tattooed by Paul Pearson at Tried & True Tattoo in Smyrna Tn. (and there's a cover-up of an old 101st Airborne tattoo going on in there too).

    Latest tattoo lowdown.....

Super fun day yesterday, my friend and I went down to Gold Rush to get tattooed by Tim Hendricks... I went first and joined the spider/web club with some filler in my armpit My buddy was going to get a rose and one of Tim's Cholo girl heads but only had time to do the rose, he'll go back sometime soon to get the girl... Drawing it on.. Unfortunately I didn't get a pic of the finished rose but I doubt I need to convince anyone how great it looked. All in all it was an amazing day. Tim, Lindsey and the rest of the Gold Rush crew were great people to be around and the whole shop was on a super positive vibe. It was a great tattoo experience that I'll remember for a long time....

  4. @mblx If you're in the States, go see Thomas Hooper at Saved Tattoo in Brooklyn. If you're in the UK, Duncan X at IntoYou, London. I think someone at Blut & Eisen in Berlin, Germany does stuff a little like that too. Look outside tattoos or tattooing for reference images. Good luck.

  5. Checked your FB pages there, Brian, and I would strongly urge you to either find someone to apprentice with, or stick to tagging walls. Homaside? How many 187's you down for?

  6. There is a lot more black on my tiger than you have, old old old design, so it's taking it's time! Thank you for the kind words, but truly, yours is the best, what, "lifelike" tiger I have ever seen! Mine is from a certain era, and they are complete opposites. you shoud be very proud of yours. Chicago has an excellent shop as well. Actually, some people claim more than one, but... If you and 1955 ever get over here, let me know and I'll give you the tour!

  11. Guess a lot would depend on where you are and where you want to go for these. I don't see anything any competent artist couldn't do, and the style is something most real tattooists could get into and work up original designs for. Throw out your city, or where you'd like to have them done, and I'm sure someone can help you out.

    Old tattoo photos

I got those pic of my dads panther head this week. He had this done in Osaka Japan in 1957. He doesn't remember much of that shore leave. He does remember that the tattoo became badly infected and after he got back to his sub all he basically remembers is waking up 3 days out to sea.

  15. Totally cool. I hope you didn't feel like I was attacking you in any way, it was not my intention. I liked what you had to say and I would never bring any negativity to this forum. You're correct about the tattoos not being the best on the tv shows. Some of the clients they would give us were very hard to work with and wanted really odd tattoos. The phrase "polishing a turd" word come to mind often... It tested ones patience.

I won't argue with you about the TV show. I have to disagree with the one part about Ami's tattooing skills, here is a photo of a tattoo he recently finished in Miami, it took him under a month and he texted the pics to a few friends. He is very far from a bad tattooer. FYI: He drew the whole dragon side on with a pen

to me, tv for adults at this point is the interweb. lots of good stuff out there if you search for it and it requires a little more effort than the remote tapping that any monkey could do. not saying everything you find will be a gem but really is the only current alternative to the mindless zombie box that is programming the masses. resist, evolve, be happy.

  21. Poor guy, his skin is "crawling" a lot... maybe it's just the heroin withdrawal that's causing that. He's obsessed. He wakes up thinking about other people's tattoos "as soon as the sun starts shining"??! Wow. Needs therapy.

  22. Yup....I agree even tho i have a westernized Japanese sleeve started. I think its got "flavor" but its a part of my "American" body suit of a mash up of tattooing styles. I dont want to be from japan and not posing as anything...im just an american who loves tattooing. That said the images do mean something to me. I do think tho the FULL BODY Japanese suit is special and I dont care how many of us americans get them you CANT water that down. Thats just too strong.

  25. @Dan S thank you, I am really pleased with it. The healing was fine, a very small amount of scabbing a little bruising. No problems at all. What's happening with your tiger?

  28. I agree. I had an interview at a shop a couple years ago in the summer. The gentleman were wearing sleeveless shirts and shorts. One guy had a skull cheese work thing on the deltoid the other guy had some little crap on his hands. That's it. I did not take the job strictly based on that. Just felt they were not in it for the same reasons . And the one guy had flip flops on. Nothing against flip flops, they're comfortable and all, I just would not wear them to work.

    Rascist tattoo redo

What would you tell him if he came in with a Clenched Fist over "Black Power", or a portrait of Che Guevara? How about "Viva la Raza"? Would those be racist too? Maybe a nice solid black Hammer and Sickle, is that hateful? If the man got the work in the joint, it was a statement he chose to make, and it took stones, and he had to back it up. It may also have kept him alive. Another thing to think on, the Swastika was, at one time, say, early sixties to late seventies, a pretty common piece, especially for scooter-trash. Didn't have a damn thing to do with nazis or racism. If he had the stones to get it put on, and you hate it, you should have had the stones to tell him to take a hike. .02

  39. I'm going to politely disagree, Stefan- If we can say that 'Tattooers are artists who can charge $500 an hour" than we can be art critics and say "Chris Cleen's stuff isn't nearly as nice". I think his stuff is derivative and muddy. I'm sure he's a perfectly nice guy. But you don't get to fly the banner of 'artist' if you don't want to have your stuff reviewed by the buying public.

    Japanese Tattoo Ideas

Great thread, Lochlan. A while back, I started this thread about Brian Kaneko. He's doing a full suit on a client and has been posting progress pics. Fantastic stuff! I have a full Japanese backpiece and one full Japanese sleeve, so I obviously have an appreciation of that style, but at the same time, I'm glad that I have the partial suit that I do. I admire people who get ONE suit in a cohesive style, but that just ain't me.
