  1. I've been tattooed by several people because I liked them, not necessarily because I thought they were the best artist around. Fortunately, they've mostly been great artists, too.

  11. Personally speaking, in the final analysis. it's all about the tattoo. That's all you will be left with long after the memory, about the experience, fades. It's a bonus if getting the tattoo is a nice experience, but for me, its not a deal breaker. Edit- I said it's all about the tattoo but..... Saturday week I have got an appointment with Doc Price in Plymouth. Doc has been tattooing since the 1950's. I'm not getting a tattoo from him because he's the best out there but because he is part of tattooing history in the UK. He tattooed a pal of mine, in the 1970's.

  12. For a small one off tattoo its less important to me, but for long term work YES, i dont want to sit for hrs and hrs with an asshole.

  13. I think personality/attitude is very important. I will take a less than perfect tattoo from a great person before I take a world-class tattoo from an asshole. Anyway though, I think their personality shows in their work to the extent that I wouldn't be attracted to an assholes artwork...at least I don't think. Short answer -- personality is very important to me. The experience and memory of the moment is going to outlive the crispnesss and vibrance of the tattoo, I think...

  16. Do what I do when people ask what my tattoos mean. Talk up a storm about how the demon on your leg relates to how the stars looked when you were born and that same night the moon did a backflip and when you were little ypur bother died and then it also means strength and courage and reminds you that you can never give up like that one time in school as a kid you fell and it hurt but you got up but because it was pizza day you were sad because.....eventually they walk away. Haha

  17. With a bit of lurking you can find your answer to this question. The problem is you are asking the wrong question. The question that would help the best would be looking for a good artist (either locally or elsewhere depending on your desired amount of travel). On the forum there are a few places to check for good shops/artists that are great at what they do. Your question and any others can easily be answered by an actual tattoo artist, and you should get the answer only from the artist you choose to tattoo you. To sum up: To get the answer on "can this be done" can only be answered by the person that will do it. It is like asking: "Can a person fix my car" Of course somebody can but you must find the mechanic first to see if they can do it. here is a good place to start:Tattoo Shop Reviews | Last Sparrow Tattoo

  19. This is something that encounter at least once a week..... you know how when you have a dentist appointment you try to cram 6 months worth of flossing into 15 minutes before your appointment? or if you have to go to the doctor, you try to shower up before you go in for whatever is ailing you? WELL PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TAKE THE SAME LIBERTIES WHEN YOU ARE GETTING TATTOOED!!!!!!!!!! brush your teefs so it dont smell like you been munchin on shit sandwiches for lunch. if you are getting your foot or cankle area tattooed, please wash your dawgs and wear a clean pair of socks! dont come in after working in the sun on the job site with your work boots and wool socks. and for you goofy hipsters.... wash your feet, borrow some socks from your dad, and wear a pair of shoes other than the sorry ass moth holed pair of vans you bought 5 years ago and have been wearing EVERYDAY since. you're gonna spend hard earned cash on a cool tattoo on your foot only to slip said foot into a pair of sneakers that smell like onions and vinegar?! not so smart. do the right thing. and while you are at it, wear some pants that fit you and put your girlfriends shirt back into her closet.

No, but back in the 1990's one of the guys I worked with saved a spreadsheet and it was so big it wouldn't re-open. We had to double his memory from 8MB to 16MB and it cost several hundred dollars!

  29. Seems like it's a lot of things. Validation, attention, but mostly lack of understanding. There will always be a never ending amount of folks that will get a few tattoos and have them be all they ever get; they won't be "in it" because they have a different relationship with tattoos. And they don't want to be covered and they don't get all wild-eyed and nerdy when someone mentions other tattooers or a rare book or whatever gives the average LSTer a halfie. So when people show off a little under the cover of asking "what to do," all you can do is either ignore it or give em a quick and succinct answer. "Looks good pal, keep it up," or "Best to go talk to whoever tattooed you, since they'll have a much bigger reference library than your google search," or just ignore it completely. Not worth gettin all worked up over <--..constantly trying to practice what I preach. (Also, when I started getting tattooed at 18, I'm sure I made all kinds of obnoxious rookie missteps -- like, getting the tattoos in the places I did -- so you can't be too frustrated. Hard though when it's every day with the same nonsense, so I share the frustration.)

    Rascist tattoo redo

I hesitate to do all this politlcal shit on what is a forum for and about tattooing. That said, there seems to be no one more intolerant than one who espouses tolerance. If you don't want to tattoo something, that's fine, totally your business. But don't call the "racist" bullshit if you're willing to do the portraits of Che, the clenched fist, the Hammer and Sickle, all those other symbols that are, ultimately, racist. The swastika is derived from the Sunwheel, which was/is a symbol used by the ancestory of ALL White people for thousands of years before a group of fanatical SOCIALISTS cloaked themselves in Nationalism and used it as a symbol of their regime. Many people still use the sunwheel, or various iterations of the swastika, as a sign of their beliefs. MAny people today still have swastikas tattooed on them that have no political meaning whatsoever. I know it's hard for someone that is, say, in their twenties or early thirties to imagine an era before political correctness, but int he sixties and seventies, the swastika was extensively used, especially by "bikers", as an emblem to shock, or to express their alienation from society. This does not make them racist. If such a person were to get that tattoo retouched, it could well be nothing more than refreshing their memories of that time. If a person got such a tattoo in prison, it's quite possible that they have an attachment to it that transcends politics or race. A mark of survival, if you will. I've posted before that I've done too many "bad" things to judge ANYONE for anything. I guess I've lost touch with that essence of absolute innocence and conviction that allows one to condemn sommeone they know nothing of because of a symbol they have tattooed on them. And just to prove what a racist I am, my oldest son's Godfather is Puerto Rican, my Granddaughter is a quarter "Native-American", and my best friend and main partner is half-Riquenoo tambien. To be truly tolerant of others means to be able to be tolerant of them even when you don't agree with them. .02

  44. Can't comment as an artist, but I've spent many, many, many hours in shops. Being tattooed, watching, and just hanging out. I've seen a lot of the repetitive motion injuries, and the frequency-related hearing loss has got to be brutal. Reading the article, it does seem that a balance of mental and physical training can only help, so I'll throw something out for people to think on. Martial Arts. Any kind, really, I won't get into all the usual "this is the best" routine, anything that you learn and practice on, hopefully, a daily basis will help immensely with strength, coordination, focus, and, if you're getting decent training, mentally. It take a good solid year, to get a grounding in any real martial art, and the study can last a lifetime-I've been involved in one form or another of the arts for a year or two shy of 50 years, and I'm still learning. Thing is, once you get the basics down, you can develop a workout that you can fit into whatever odd chunk of time you have available. In 20 minutes or a half hour you can work up a good sweat, get your body back in place, and get your head together as well. Burns stress like a mother, and hey-if a visitor to your shop gets too rowdy, it doesn't hurt to be able to walk him out the door without resorting to firearms and police and all of that. Just a suggestion, don't mean to say I'm an expert on what a tattooist should do.

  49. A guy came in and told me one day that he wanted to get a specifically random tattoo, we talked about it for a few minutes and I was kind of having trouble coming up with something random on the spot lol. So he said " I dunno bro, I just wanna get something crazy and weird, like, I dunno, a banana riding a unicycle and juggling chainsaws." So that is what we did. I also had a walk in that got a grilled cheese sandwich.

  50. For me it's the 90lb 18yr old kid who wants this huge detailed tattoo down his ribs, I say, "Man thats a big tattoo for your first one, you sure you can hang"? I proceed to tell him that maybe he should get it somewhere more tolerable. He says, "Aww yea man, I aint no punk"! So I say, "Ok Skeeter, lets go". In the first 2 minutes he pours sweat to the point the stencil is almost gone, so I draw it back on, do a few more lines and he says, "Man I don't know....can I come back later to finish this outline"?
