Tattoos and the workplace
gougetheeyes and 2 others reacted to HaydenRose for a topic
I recently had an anthropology professor that was fairly covered and she talked about some of her past troubles landing jobs. Right now, my university treats her great and appreciates her knowledge and teaching abilities (so there are places of business that put work ethic > image). She told us one story where she had completed a phone interview for a teaching job in NYC that was apparently an amazing job. They literally hired her over the phone and told her to just come in on her start day. So she started work and met with the head of the department or whatever that had given her the interview, and he saw her tattoos and immediately said to her, we don't think you will be a good fit for this university. She just saw it as a good thing that she didn't wind up working for those judgmental twats. Now where she works she does a lot of traveling for her research on medical anthropology and the natives in other countries LOVE her tattoos and shes had a lot of great experiences. Thought I'd share her story, I think it highlights the delicate balance of tattoos in the workplace. It really depends on the employer. I told one of my employers that I had them and I could keep them covered if she wished, and she showed me a lot of respect for being honest and kindly asked me to stay covered during open houses and the like (I worked at a daycare--so she was worried about the parents reactions) Right now, I'm a cashier and even though I get some dirty glances from customers, the little old ladies showing me their 20+ year old tattoos is worth letting them peek out every now and then. Also more heavily tattooed people recognizing the quality of my tattoos and sharing conversation. I'm hoping once I start working in social work, they will help in certain situations, maybe in connecting with people or youths in trouble.3 points -

Well, having moderated a fairly large forum for a number of years, I won't congratulate you, but I will wish you the best of luck! Not a lot of people understand how difficult it is to be a mod in a decent-sized online community, all they see is the "glamour" and the buttons you can push. Not even close. All the best to you!2 points -

I think mechanical things like cars and planes should be tattooed less. All those straight lines never seem to look good on skin.2 points -
Thanks. I'm really happy with the snake head. I got confused when he asked me what scales I wanted blue and green. I mistakenly thought I was asking for the reverse of what I actually asked for. It was a mild shock when I looked in the mirror and the snake's head wasn't the beautiful blue hue I envisioned. Ha! My bad for not communicating exactly what I wanted. Still got a super cool snake head, though.2 points

Too early for me to have decent pix of this work, I only got it tonight, but if you like Traditional stuff, you may find it interesting. Originally done as an advertising sign by Ralph Johnstone for his parlor in the arcades on south State Street in Chicago, and repainted by Nick Colella as his signature sign at CTC. He's had it hanging there over his work station for I don't know how many years, and in the times I've sat for him, it just kinda grew on me. He told me tonight he's never put it on anyone else, so I guess I got a one-of-a-kind piece of Chicago tattooing history, from one of Chicago's tattooing legends. Nick Colella / Chicago Tattooing Company. I can't recommend Nick enough. He is a wonderful artist, good people, fast, accurate, and skillful tattooist, and an all-around good guy. Anyone thinking of gettinng tattooed in the Chi should give serious consideration to him. I did post this in another thread, so if that's not kool, please, would a mod just delete this. Thanks to all of you who have "liked" my posts here thus far...even if I ahven't personally thanked you all, please know that it is appreciated!2 points

Full Back Piece Thread
hogg reacted to CaptCanada for a topic
@hogg donburi, and when this site launched was just about the time I was starting. So far I have 1XX hours but I stopped keeping track, one full leg done and a backpiece that was started last autumn. I screwed up though with choosing to do a leg first, but at the time I wasn't sure if I wanted a suit our not. So I started out with the intention of squid pants and changed my mind along the way....... But now I wish I would have started with my back.1 point -

Parts of my squidpants run basically to that afore-mentioned crease. It was definitely the worst part of the back of the leg (I actually didn't mind the crease of the knee...the kneecap, however...). I'm always of the "keep the best for last" mindset. Given a choice, I'd rather do the more painful spots first and be done with it.1 point -

I get tattooed at Name Brand in Ann Arbor fairly often, which is a four hour drive each way from where I live. I've made the trek to Chicago (8+ hours each way) to get tattooed by Mario a few times, and last year, I drove around 7.5 hours each way to Toronto to get tattooed by Lizzie Renaud and Adrian Menzies. There's a rad shop in my town, and I have a lot of tattoos from them, but there's something so fucking awesome about tattoo road trips.1 point

Didn't find the cheeks themselves too bad, but the hamstrings felt like they were being cut open by scalpels during the outline. During healing, it periodically felt like a blowtorch was hitting them. I actually liked that in a perverse sort of way and would start laughing whenever it happened.1 point -
LST logo replacing the heart: As far as things I'd like to see more, not so much subject, but color; people should get lot's more color. We have the technology now and I wonder how bright some of those old tattoos would've been if they had access to the colors we do now. Also, tattoos that look like tattoos.1 point

HAHA! The funniest thing is that after I wrote that line, the first thing I thought was "Wait... I think @Lance may have Japanese heritage... ok, he can be the exception" (I think they're might be a few others also...) Don't get me wrong, I respect the traditions and for the most part try and do them justice. As an example I have sakura and a chrysanthemum in one sleeve. These flowers are from different seasons and shouldn't be together... However, for my cultural heritage (Whitey lol) a 'mum represents your Mum so I got it at the time since I wasn't sure if I'd get another sleeve (who was I kidding?) I've had conversations with Japanese tattooers about the sleeve and they dig why I got it and also know that I did do my reading into the history and that I respect it. :)1 point

@gougetheeyes Sailor Eddie (who has literally become a brother to me) offered me and apprenticeship on June 2nd in Philly! I have turned down others over the years......but it seems to be the right time in my life and the right person to be taught by! I almost said no.....but he really wants me to learn so I am in the process! And although I never intended to ever tattoo (I was very happy just being a canvas) I am very excited and committed to learning the craft to the best of my ability! :)1 point -
Chris Garver or Marcos Hernandez would probably do an awesome tattoo as you described.1 point

I know there's a better thread on raised tattoos than this one, but you can read about stuff here: http://www.lastsparrowtattoo.com/forum/tattoo-after-care/558-tattoo-outline-raised.html Next time, poke around a little bit and try out the search function to see if something's already been covered. (In conclusion, raised tattoos are common, especially in certain weather, nothing to freak out about.)1 point -
I just booked two appointments at BlackHeart in S.F. I'm going to get a Zeis style dragon from Jeff on my left forearm, and a day of the dead skull on my right inner bicep from Juan. I'm impressed that both Scott and Tim are pretty well booked solid 5 weeks ahead of time! I'm in on the 26th of July and super stoked about it. After that I've got a week to enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the city.1 point

Our shop is "family friendly", which means we get customers in here with their screaming 8 month old babies. Last week, I had a girl say (in reference to her screaming baby) "Oh, just put him on the floor. He'll shut up" I politely told her "Fuck no", and she asked "Why, is there like bacteria and shit?" Awesome.1 point -

Yuppies. I know this us a huge generalization, but they usually get the wackest tattoos!!!! They get super small super detailed crap in a super private spot. Coming into the shop acting like they are such huge rebels. Wanna be a rebel? Buy a Honda instead of a BMW. Reminds me of one of my favorite jokes.... What's the difference between a BMW and a porqupine? Porqupines have the pricks on the OUTSIDE. *nothing against BMW owners. Just yuppies1 point
