  5. My first tattoo was put on by Stano in Daytona. I was 17 and drove down with a couple of scary older skinhead dudes who barely tolerated me. Got the comic character Judge Dredd on my shoulder, because this sort of thing happens when a dyed-in-the-wool nerd tries to be a tough guy - "I know, I'll get a tattoo of the biggest badass in my *pushes up glasses* comic book collection!" Anyway, like 10 years later that goddamn Stallone movie came out and I walked around groaning every time anybody saw the damn tattoo until a couple years back, when I buried it under this:

  18. I was 21 when I got my first tattoo. I'm glad I waited until then or I would have some really stupid shit on my body. My boyfriend had gotten a few tattoos from Tony Sellers aka Fat Tony at Hobos Tattoo in Portsmouth, NH. I really wanted to get one so my boyfriend took me to go see Tony. I told him I wanted a rose on my shoulder and just kind of left it at that. He showed me one that he had in his sketchbook and without even really looking at it, I said sure. I remember being so nervous as soon as he started to tattoo me that I was shaking. It was so bad that he had to stop and wait until I calmed down. That rose is still one of my favorite tattoos that I have. Tony has since become friend of mine and I highly recommend him if you are ever in NH.

  20. I was 19, and I got the Rocket From The Crypt logo on the inside of my arm. I thought I was so punk. Luckily, it was done really well and has since been filled in with color. Now it's my little red rocket. Crudeness intended. 11 years later I still dig it.

    acetate stencils

Curious if anyone else in here collects old acetate stencils? I would really like to have a peek at other peoples collections. For some reason I almost enjoy collecting stencils more than flash. I just like holding an old acetate in my hand and imagining how many people got tattoos from it. Here are some of my collection. I have a bunch more I need to take pictures of. Bob Shaw Owen Jensen

  23. I got mine three days after my eighteenth birthday--I'm sure I thought I was showing maturity and restraint by waiting those three days too--and I looked so young I'm pretty sure the tattooer thought my ID was fake. I wanted a bird, so I got a swallow off the wall. And now I have a whole bunch of bird tattoos, but it's still one of my favorites. Done by Joao Paulo Rodrigues.

  27. Hahaha spoken like a true Presbyterian! Always got to throw the trinity in there for the celts. I grew up Presbyterian too, which is why I think it took me so long to finally become atheist. The church I grew up in was so reasonable and balanced it took me a while to see the true nature of religion. I had to go out and see the way other people worship and hear what they believed and I was not impressed.

  28. Let us know as it gets closer as that'll be right around our two year birthday so I am sure we'll be having something and we can try to plan it during that time. Are you looking for something in Oakland proper or just a reasonably priced hotel? If reasonably priced look at Emeryville as it is the first town over the Bay Bridge which means an easy middle point if you'll have a car.

  32. My older work was all acetate stencils. The stencils were usually made from the wall art by an apprentice. Perforate all those little holes along every line... I used to watch them do it. I can recall the artist cursing when they had to cut a fresh stencil. They were usually kept in a drawer in some sort of order and had the reference # from the flash on the wall. CG

    acetate stencils

For some reason I think I missed this thread -- thanks Bunny! @ShawnPorter hope you don't mind me linking this from OV, but here's a great post from the Philly convention. Perez picked up an old Lee Roy stencil and I was lucky enough to stumble over to his booth and get it put on, with graphite and all. Lineage « Occult Vibrations

    Lady Heads

I'm kind of collecting lady heads from different artists. As it's been mentioned by others, I love the fact that such a classic design can be interpreted so differently person to person. I have 4 so far. Here are 2, one of them is the classic Bob Wicks flash - both by Matty D'Arienzo (both taken right after). The other 2 are a girl from valerie vargas and a girl head/butterfly from El Bara. On my list for others are steve boltz, jordan teear, virginia elwood, nick collela, pretty much anyone at spider murphys (that's a hell of a lot of travelling though so it'll take a while!)
