  1. My right foot done by Frank Carter at Frith Street Tattoo last night. I took the photo from his instagram. Next step is to get cobwebs coming from my ankles down to surround both images he's done on my feet :)

    Opinion on this!

actually, not trying to build internet ego at all, man. just pointing out something to help responses go a bit smoother in the future. also, in addition to the aforementioned ways of noticing popularity of a thread, on the main page of the forum, it lists the Most Liked Threads, which are generally ongoing discussions of some kind. i believe the Latest Tattoo Lowdown thread has something like 4100. and, as for questions of civility over a faux pas, this wasn't all that bad. i've seen worse, and was part of a worse reaction when i came onto this forum while commiting a faux pas. i've spent a lot of time since reading instead of posting, learning, and trying not to overstep my bounds. hopefully, i've done just that.

    acetate stencils

Neat stuff. 3 of my earliest pieces were done from stencils, and pieces of the 4th. Talk about a pain! One kool part is that one of them, a parrot, is still at Chicago Tattooing, and my sons are planning on getting it on themselves. I'd watch Dale outlining on a stencil-design, and wonder howinhell he could possibly see what he was doing. Somehow, it always seemed to come out right.

    Hi!

My name is Tika and thanks to this great forum I discovered the work of amazing tattoo artists here in London. I love Valerie Vargas work and after the interview that I watch here I was more amazed as she comes across as and mazing person! I kept an eye on her twitter and got a cancellation spot, so thanks lovely people of this forum! I also have had the pleasure of being tattooed by the great Ivan Szazi in Sao Paulo. Looking forward to getting a bit more ink :) I hope Valerie opens her list soon. On the waiting list for Xam too...happy times! Peace Tika

    acetate stencils

Curious if anyone else in here collects old acetate stencils? I would really like to have a peek at other peoples collections. For some reason I almost enjoy collecting stencils more than flash. I just like holding an old acetate in my hand and imagining how many people got tattoos from it. Here are some of my collection. I have a bunch more I need to take pictures of. Bob Shaw Owen Jensen

  13. And still a few more pic"s from the event. It went over very well, but notice inside the building there is the ashtray to the right of the pic of Ed Young tattooing, campus gallery with smokeing, that kinda dates the pic. That rollaway that Ed is working off of was my old traveling rollaway, all contained with an autoclave and sterile trays, still got it up in storage, hauled that chair to many States and Convention centers too.

    Legends

This post is most emphatically NOT about a legendary tattooist, but mayhap a legend of tattoing? So, many moons ago, when I was yet a youngster, we went to Walter's Barber Shop, out near Mannheim and Ogden. This was a real-live, old-time guys barber shop. You know, True Magazine, Esquire, pinups on the wall, racing sheets available, the whole drill. Walter was probably in his mid-sixties at the time. One day, I must have been maybe 12, I was in getting a haircut, and for the first time, it registered that he had tattoos on each arm! Actually, a sailing ship on one forearm, and a nekkid pin-up girl on the other. Both looked to have been done, probably during the maiden voyage of the Ark. Nice, even greenish ink, I"m sure you've all seen the stuff. Anyhow, I asked him about them, and he tells me "oh sure, I used to do tattoos right in the backroom here!" Well, I had to see it, and he took me back to his storeroom, and sure enough, he had all kinds of tattooing gear there. Machines, hand-needles, flash, all kinds of stuff that I didn't recognize but knew I wanted! "No, it isn't for sale, I guess I just like to have it in case I ever decide to use it again." That, and he didn't want my pops to come looking for him with a baseball bat, I'm sure. So as we talked, it turned out that he had tattooed in that area for maybe 15-20 years, pretty steadily, and had made a nice bit of extra change at it. Back then, in Illinois, you could get a tattoo as a minor if you had your parents permission. You can guess the rest. He did a full chest-piece of a sailing ship on a young lad who presented a note from his dear old Mither saying he had her blessings, and wouldn't you know the little rascal was only 14 and had forged it!!! End of tatttoing in LaGrange. Walter escaped any serious repurcussions, but had to hang-up his tattooing shingle after that. Still had the sign there, too! Don't know what his last name was, I'm going to do a little digging, see if I can track him through his Barber's License. Who knows what stories the man could have told, or what the equipment was?!

  22. I think Bunny hit the nail on the head for me here. Tattoo magazines are just slutty looking chicks with little to no clothing on and shitty tattoos, so not any different than a 'real' porno mag other than the tattoo mags don't show an actual vagina hole. I mean obviously a porn mag is way further than just a slutty dressed chick as far as what's being shown but as far as a (and I hate to use this word but) feminist point of view, the chick in the tatt mags are worse cause they aren't even getting paid for it. But yeah, as far as this topic goes in relation to porn being in shops, I think it comes down to most shops are all men, men tend not to realize what the middle aged soccer mom they tattoo might be offended by. Personally, I don't understand why anyone would need or want to view pornography in any situation other than while masturbating or with the person you're about to fuck. Why do you need to look at a spread asshole while you wait to get tattooed? Can't you just look at a magazine about music or art or literature or whatever. Fly fishing maybe. Do shops have these laying about just to prove how bad ass they are?

  25. Check if there is an utrecht store anywhere near you or you can just order from them. I don't really like dick blick and Utrecht usually has good sales going on. They also sell 12 packs of Dr. ph martins (i think they are about $65 which is decent). They have a good paper selection and all kinds of pens and brush pens as well.

  37. I have moths tattooed on my throat, flying in toward a candle. Their antennae aren't fuzzy so I guess I really have butterflies, huh? Whatever. As for unicorns, I always found it strange somehow that a big, powerful animal like a horse that can kick your brains out gets a long, sharp horn suitable for goring and all of the sudden it's sissy stuff for an 8 year old girl's sticker collection.

  42. This is pretty much the only foum i check regularly. I've been using Forum Runner for a few weeks now on iPhone and iPad. Like Alanna, at first it felt a little clunky, like maybe I was going to miss out on something, but once I got used to the way it looks and feels, it's actually easier to see new posts than with a web browser. Direct messages work great too. The main thing lacking is a 'like' feature. I still prefer the browser version for over-long, tense, snooty and sarcastic rambling posts though.

  48. i wish mine was funny but i guess that would depend on how warped some of u fuckers are. i was in between appointments and some older guy comes in looking real stressed out. so, in my head im like here comes the bullshit. so he asked who does portraits and of course the dude i work with points at me. so i start to help the guy and hes acting real strange but i keep the convo moving well. he eventually shows me the picture and im like oh ok so this guy is upset that hes got a black grandchild(he was a seemingly well off white dude) so i try to explain to him that since the pic was of a new born baby there wasnt much unique features and that he should wait till the baby was older... i went on to try to explain the lack of features like, "there are only slits for eyes and barely a nose" but when the baaby got older he/she would be more identifiable as his kid grandkid whatever. long story short the guy storms off unhappy with what i said. calls my boss screaming and cursing that i was a racist unsensitive scumbag cause the baby in the pic.... was his dead, turned black from decay, half asian baby and that the slits for eyes comment was a dig at his asian wife who wasnt even present during the convo. so yeah :/ thats the worst for me ever.
