  7. i've been in the same dilemna. i now have opted to plan my backpiece to cover my butt. i ended up getting a whale-on-fire up the back of my thigh to tie my the bottom half of my leg sleeve in. i also have kinda-matching peony-weird snake pieces in progress on the fronts of my thigh that cover the knee. here's a pic, i really love the way the placement turned out.

  8. There's a reason I'm married to a tattooer. I can get whatever the fuck I wanted tattooed on me, and he's not gonna blink an eye, and vice versa. I can't believe there's chicks who get jealous of a tattoo of a lady. That's just.... stupid? I don't know, seems super insecure to me. It's a fucking tattoo. It's not a person. I don't get it. My dude had his ex's initial tattooed (S) and just turned it into a dollar sign. I don't give one tiny shit about it either and never have. He's got lots of lady heads too. I'm 100% sure he wouldn't care if I got a man pin up either. I mean, my dude got a huge rib piece that features a blonde girl with huge tits and short shorts riding a wolf's tongue. In case you don't know, I'm brunette, no big fake tits, and I never ever wear short shorts. Do I care? No. Does it mean he secretly wants to fuck blonde chicks with huge tits? No. Does it mean that the tattooer made an awesome tattoo and gave the girl blonde hair because it worked better with the tattoo? Yes. Sorry for the mini rant but, if you don't like tattoos or people with 'too many' tattoos, don't get involved with a someone who has one cause there's a good chance it'll turn into more. OR Date whoever makes you feel good and not give a shit about their tattoos cause it really doesn't matter.

  11. URSULA ANVIL! I agree but it becomes less black and white when you're not with a tattooer. I don't think she was jealous, more nervous about me getting covered and also spending money.. but there was definitely something slightly cutting or insecure from her end (I felt at least) if she'd make a comment. As far as just getting tattooed, it sounds like you've got the perfect relationship when it comes to that! But it's not always as simple for the rest of us. Not everyone is gonna totally get it, just like anything. Hasn't stopped me from anything except getting my hands and/or neck tattooed, which has proven to be a wise choice.

  21. Hello fellow tattooed lawyer! Hey at least you had 2 other people in law school! Back to relationships - I don't think it matters w/r my partner has tattoos or wants them, so long as she gets why I do and doesn't say or think dumb things about them. Basically, a tattoo-educated person. My girlfriend had a large tattoo before we got together and she wants to keep going large, but our basic disagreements now are about colour or black/grey. I'm trying to move away from too much colour and she loves the stuff!

I'm confused... Anyways, some people want to pick an image off the wall for $150 an our while some want their life story poured into their tattoo for $500. Whatever floats your boat, right? Some would think its crazy to sporadically pick an image off the wall and have it permenantly tattooed on their body with out prior planning while others would think its silly to get a personalized tattoo according to the vibe the artist picks up from the client. Personally I want what I like and I'm willing to pay for it, end of story...

  27. All the tattoo shows are semi-guilty pleasures for me and my ol' lady, so we gave Tattoo School a try. As someone who's watched a lot of beloved cultural and sub-cultural traditions and artifacts get exploited, adulterated, trend-ified and generally idiot-ized throughout the past 30+ years, I'm fairly well outrage-proof at this point. And as a 43-year-old who's been hanging around tattoo shops since 17, I've seen and heard too much carny, sleazy shit to pretend modern tattooing is wholly some sacred artisanal treasure getting violated here... This irresponsible pile of shit TV show, however, legitimately depressed me. I'm generally happy to get out of the way of stupid people being stupid, but man... I want this show shut the fuck down, and with extreme prejudice. Tim, it's a good thing we share enthusiasms for particle physics, macrame, homemade cheeses and smooth jazz. We always have so much to chat about during tattoos - we'll never have to stoop to discussing some stupid TV program!

Think of what the poor guy-or girl-at the front desk has to deal with, each and every day! The artists get, usually, a good amount of respect, but the guy at the front desk? That geek that hassles you for money, and makes you fill out forms n shit? Fuck him, right?! I've never had a bad experience with a front-end type. Even tho' I limit my actual tattooing to Chicago Tattooing Co., I visit parlors wherever I travel, and I travel a lot. What I have found is that when I go in, as long as I am up-front about not being there to be tattooed, but just checking it out, I am treated pretty well. Most often, I end up talking with whoever the artist running the shop is and so forth. I guess it's the same old same old, you get the respect you give.

    Good Afternoon!

I've been lurking around here for almost 2 years and finally decided to join. I started getting tattooed last year and I'm almost finished my first piece. Can't wait to get started on the next one. This place helped me when I was looking for answers about how to pick an artist and when trying to figure out the best way to work with my artist. I couldn't me more happy about the advice I found. So I definately owe you all a huge thank you... So, Thank you! Below is a pic of my back so far.

    hello!

Hi! I found this forum googling experiences for full back pieces. I just started mine, I'm about 6 hours in. In fact, just had my second session today. I saw an old thread from about a year ago and it was nice to see some similar thoughts to mine. Then I kept reading up on this forum, and I thought I'd join and say "Hi." I'm 32 and in Portland, OR, and I got my first tattoo at around 15. A little bit ago, I went through this health issue where I thought it was pretty certain that I couldn't get tattooed again. I have a complex heart defect and there's all these worries with complex heart defects about our medications and heart infections. Anyway, right before my second open heart surgery, a most wonderful tattoo artist here in Portland went above and beyond and helped me get what I thought was my last ever tattoo -- a most beautiful surgery inspired tattoo (of course, I'm biased when I think that I have the best surgery-inspired tattoo). Then, most fortunately, with the combined efforts of her, my cardiologists, and the folks managing my medications, I got the go ahead to keep getting tattooed. My artist scheduled me in for 2 sessions. When I went in to see her, and she asked, "Well, what are we doing?" I just went all out and decided to get the full back piece I always wanted but didn't think I was going to be able to get again in my life. Anyway, that's what's going on with me and I just wanted to say hi since I really liked the posts I saw here. Anyway, hello! Nice meeting you guys.

  37. @Pablo saw that on his instagram earlier, that's great! @CultExciter never thought about when I'd be "done" just always said I wanted to start my back by 30, which only leaves me just over a year. 35 sounds good though, I know I could get all the big stuff knocked out, which right now are my thighs and tum tum. I like the 35 goal.

    Chris Conn is back!

I've been to Hawaii before as well, about 12 years ago. The weather was nice but it was pretty boring. It didn't seem like there was much to do. I'm not into surfing or beaching and I've seen the rainbow trees already... It was just an example though, you guys get my point. And as far as all great artists putting that much into each tattoo, that's totally untrue. He's dedicating his entire day to you, he wants to speak to you in person before he even agrees to tattoo you, just to see if you're cool. He wants to give you a design that reflects your life and not just the open spot you have to fill. I don't know one other tattooer that's doing all that for each and every tattoo.

  45. Yeah, you're not gonna win 'em all. I have an Oiwa head that my wife hates. Came home with it, super stoked on it and she said she hated it and it was gross.. which took the wind outta my sails pretty quick but I still love it and even though she'll still mention it every summer when the shorts come out, I've gotten enough other stuff around it to sort of temper that. Oh well, she still married me

i've had comments like this get back to me concerning the desk guys at my shop and they only make me wonder about the customer. i highly respect our staff at frith st and like them very much as friends, they are trustworthy and take care of me and my appts and if they were useless, they wouldnt be employed for sure. I could easily say this applies to most good tattoo shops. i'm not sure how well your encounter went, just saying be careful what you call people online, it can come across much more harshly :) good luck with your tattoo :)
