  3. You are taking what I said a bit far. Let me try it this way... I live near Madison, Wisconsin, which is about as "liberal" as a place can be. Thing is, if you don't gt in line with whatever the partei line is, you're obviously a dangerous person. My one and only point is that Hunter has a right to his opinion, whether or not anyone feels that that opinion is valid. And just a note, the person I mentioned who had the sex-change operation is my cousin...and my friend. We don't all have to think alike, just as we don't all have to be tattooed alike. We just have to recognize the rights of others to think as they wish, as long as they aren't interfering with anyone elses rights.

  4. I stumbled upon this blog while cheating on LST with the Birdge Nine message board. chemowithfred | A blog unfolding the unlikely story of two cancer patients from opposite ends of the century. Its a collection of daily stories about a 27 year old liver cancer patient and his 80 year old friend who go through Chemo together. Please spread the word about this. I look like a god damn fool in my schools library laughing and borderline crying at my computer. Thanks pals.

    Old tattoo photos

I don't know if I uploaded these correctly, so I hope the pictures come through along with the explanations. The first few, of the peacock, skull/top-hat and snake, were done by Al Schiefley. The guy got the tattoos in the early 70's, shortly before Al died. I ran into this guy in southeastern Ohio and asked if I could take his picture. He didn't know what the big deal was, and seemed a little weirded out at first. I told him I liked getting pictures of old tattoos, especially done by guys from Ohio, and after talking with him a few minutes he seemed delighted about it. I also have a couple pictures of Stoney St. Clair tattoos that are on an old guy around here, but I can't seem to find them anywhere (one was a rad little skunk, that the guy said he just did on him freehand). They're on an old photo card. I'll upload them if I find them. The guy in the stocking cap got almost all his tattoos from Sailor Jerry Collins. I can't remember the exact dates he told me, but I remember thinking they had to have been done before the time period that I read about where Jerry got pissed at the IRS and quit tattooing for a while, so the 1950's I believe. I took the pictures in 2006, and he said the tattoos were like fifty years old. My memory might be wrong, but I think that's what he said. This dude was salty and had no problem lifting up his shirt for the picture. He got tattooed while in the service in Hawaii, and had some rad stories. The last pictures are of Tex Rowe. I took them while at a convention in Pittsburgh in 2008. Actually, I went with Rich T., and we were both snapping pictures...I think it was his camera and he may have taken the pictures and sent them to me after. In any event, I remember Mike Skiver saying that Tex's back was done by Brooklyn Blackie, and I believe he said his chest was too, although I can't remember for sure (if you know, I'd like to know, thanks). It was pretty cool that Skiver brought him there and was bringing him around the convention. I seem to remember someone telling me that Mike did this for him often, and was close with Tex and his family, which I thought was really neat. Respect. Tex seemed fine with the pictures and it was nice to actually meet him. The dude was not only this rad old timer in tattooing, but I'd heard he was a highly decorated WWII veteran who (I heard) trained where I did (Ft. LeonardWood, MO), though I don't know that for sure. Tex passed away the next year. I got tattooed by Bowery Stan at that convention too, and I know there were a couple pictures of him and Tex, but I don't know what happened to them.

  20. I'm new to tattoos, but I'm working on a sleeve. My first sessions were 4 and 5 hours respectively and I was really tired after them, but my last session was 6 1/2 hours of pretty steady work and I was exhausted for two days. I don't know if it's related to my advanced years (54), but I just fell into bed when I got home.

  24. i'll admit it up front... i am as close minded as anyone you can imagine, when it comes to tolerating ignorance, predjudice, and/or bigotry of any kind. if someone thinks getting a sex change is dangerous, it's no different to them thinking it's dangerous to marry a person of another race/nationality, or dangerous to associate with someone of a different religious background (because, of course, they're a heathen), or even dangerous to get tattoo (which obvoiusly always leads to a life of crime, crippling addiction, and rejection of any sense of good). however, as long as someone isn't coming from a place of misguided, uneducated ignorance and/or hate, i'm more open minded than just about anyone you'll meet.

  25. If his wife doesn't mind, well, that's pretty much the end of the story. I grew up with a guy, a real badass gangbanger, ended up going into the Marines, came out, really a rough piece of bidness. Then one day he sent me a pic of himself in a wig and a formal, and announced that he was a man trapped in a woman's body. A few years later, he did the Thailand trip and made it official. She's still a badass, and can throw down with the best of them if need be, but also every bit the Lady when left alone. Who am I to judge? It ain't my trip, and I don't understand it, but hey-there it is. One thing I would like to point out is that there is no group of people who are as judgemental as those who pride themselves on their open minds. I don't agree with Hunter, but hey-it's his opinion, and he's got a right to it just as much as anyone else has a right to theirs. But as we say round here, "never trust a guy with a naked face and no tattoos!"

  26. Hey All, Being from Ontario I know how hard it can be to find good tattooers, especially doing Japanese work. For those interested you've got an awesome chance this month. Horitoshi1 family Horimitsu from Tokyo will be doing a guest spot at TCB Tattoo in Toronto from May 16th to 26th. The shop is located at 618 Queen St West (near the beer store). Open from 12-8pm daily. Appointments can be made by calling the shop at 416-203-1516. You can view his work here JAPANESE TATTOO

  27. What's a poll have to do with it? look back in history, public opinion would have (and has) said that owning other humans like livestock is fine, withholding women's right to vote is fine, killing people for their land is fine. Numbers are bullshit and mob rule doesn't make anything right. If embracing differences and backing people bold enough to be themselves in a world full of people that would rather see them dead than happy is dangerous nonsense, then watch out. I'm a world class threat...and I will press the issue.

  30. Transgender is not a fetish. I will not go on too long about this though if anyone is interested do some research on how doctors determine if a baby is a "boy" or a "girl" at birth. Plus the stuff on the surgeries when a baby/child doesn't fit "our" prescribed genital measurements at birth and how they are assigned a sex. It is all rather scary stuff. Bottomline I support anyone who wishes to be them if it makes them happy rather than trying to live an unhappy life that society will deem "normal". I work in psychology and do lots of work with LGBTQ individuals including policy and advocacy....there is no normal as everyone is unique so the DSM can really do more harm than not (we all can actually meet one or many of the clusters). We have similarities sometimes but each person has their own etiology from experience to language to development so to subscribe to a "norm" is to sell your life short. Thats all, carry on

    Ink Masters

Oliver does make a point about Navarro. I mean for example Joe Rogan getting a sleeve by one guy is essentially getting one tattoo. Basically your scope of knowledge about tattooing would be limited to the one shop and one tattooer who tattooed you. Even if Navarro's tattoo design choices aren't in line with what I would get, spending 20 years getting tattooed by guys like Roberts, Negrete, and Mahoney among others makes a solid case for being a non tattooer judge. But if the question was who do you want to do smoke a bowl with and hit the Vegas strip with, I would say Rogan wins that one every time.

From the article preview: Heck, at least Joe Rogan is funny, doesn't take himself too seriously, and has some actual nice ink (although I haven't gotten a good look at it, it appears nice from a distance). IMHO, YMMV, etc...

    Tattoo age on VBS

Hey All, As of right now, there is no plan for another season of Tattoo Age. It would also be safe to say that their will be no DVD. With that being said, all of these suggestions sound amazing, but probably will not happen. Tattoo Age has no "staff", it was just myself and fellow producer Lauren Cynamon, who also shoots and edits, along with 2 editors Shan Huang and Abby Ellis. We all still work at Vice, and on a variety of projects. The Last Sparrow community has been so encouraging with the whole series, and even though I am not much of a poster, I wanted to say thank you. Chris Grosso P.S. Personally, I think Freddy Corbin Part 2 and Mike Rubendall Part 2 are a tattoo nerds dream videos, but that is just me.

  48. Personally that scratchy, graphic stuff gets too much attention as it is. I like it less than colour realism. I don't think it belongs in tattooing, a way for an artist to express themselves on somebody else's body. I know the people ask for it and pay for it, but part of a tattooer's job it to stop people getting ugly shit they will want covered when they grow up and see real tattoos done properly. Actually, I apply that to anything that doesn't look like a tattoo. "how clever, it doesn't look like a tattoo" I know this makes me sound like a dick, but I've seen it time and time again. I've even made some of the same mistakes myself, getting bold graphic crap that I thought made me special and clever. It didn't. It just ruined the space for a proper tattoo. I think what Hooper does is capture the same urge to be bold and different but he executes it with an amazing eye for design and respect for the body, not to mention his work is filtered through his knowledge of tattooing as a whole. Horses for courses I guess....
