Just found out (a few weeks ago) that my co-worker has most of his body covered by Grime (he also states his right sleeve was one of Grimes 1st sleeves). I knew he had tattoos but, he's a lot older than me and I was always nervous to ask . He told me he might be able to get me some pictures so I can post 'em up on here. I felt stupid not realizing it was Grime. The bio-mechanical art is incredible.

  3. Many thanks for posting. @klyegrey That brought back a load of good memories. I've seen most of the bands on that film, The Clash,The Jam, Subway Sect, Chelsea, The Adverts. I'll even admit to going to a Boomtown Rats gig, even though I thought they were bandwagon jumpers and that Bob Geldof was a massive poseur. During one of the numbers someone jumped up on stage and busted Geldofs nose, blood everywhere . That was worth the admission fee alone. So many of them no longer with us. Joe Strummer and more recently Jimmy Pursey from Sham 69 (he’s the guy who got his arse out near the beginning of the film when Mark Perry was being interviewed) Gene October the lead singer with Chelsea and Poly Styrene from breast cancer last year :(. Hard to believe that was 34 years ago. Great days.

Sometime in the late 90's(I think 97?) some friends and I went to the 9:30 club to see Lee Perry perform. I wasn't driving and at that point was kinda drinking a bit to excess. The show was great, and it was packed. I proceeded to get my drink on in the club. After the show, my friends and I gathered at the corner in front of the club to see what we would do next. While discussing(and me trying to stand up straight) my friend points out that Adam Yauch was standing a few feet away quitly talking to someone. Plenty of other folks seemed to see him as well but nobody was bothering him or asking for autographs or dick-riding or anything. He's just enjoying a conversation with someone without anyone harassing him. So what do I do? I drunkenly yell out and call him BY THE WRONG NAME. In front of my friends and dozens of otheer people. "YO ADROCK!!!" Then drunk-walk over to try to bullshit with him. As I stand there(well, sort of weave back-and-forth there) I realize I have nothing to talk about. So I ramble for a moment or two about growing up on Long Island and about shows I saw of the Beasties back in '87 or '88 and rapidly come up with nothing to say. Coming up short with conversation I then do the next completely fixed gear-ass thing to do and say "yo, get up on a flyer for me!" and hand him a handbill for the night's event and a silver Uni wide marker. He looks at the marker and then at me, like 'what the fuck am I supposed to do with this?' kinda look. I drunkenly interpret this to question why I had a giant silver marker and tell him that I'm a writer etc, etc. So he writes some thing on there and I take it and leave. Can't remember anything else after that. The next day I wake up and as I'm going through my pockets from the night before, I find the handbill he wrote on. He had written 'MCA B-Boy'. As I am reading 'MCA' all I can hear in my head is "YO ADROCK!!!!". Instantly I remember what I had done and said and felt like more of an idiot than I ever had my entire life. My friends have never mentioned the incident since. I still have the handbill as a funny reminder of my drunken idiocy. I have to say, he was remakably nice and polite. Even after I called him by the wrong name and acted like a drunken moron. He didn't even correct me about the name-thing. Thanks for giving us lots of good music, good times, and our inspirations. RIP Adam.

  11. No no no. There is an American quirk for you. Everybody thinks he's "poor." The typical "poor" person in America lives in a home with air conditioning, cable t.v. with two television sets, a stove, a microwave, refrigerator, washer and dryer, some video game bullshit, a VCR or DVD player with 5 or more movies a piece for them, a computer (possibly with the internet) and has a bike and a car in the garage. This can all be had by sitting on your dead ass and taking money from the productive people of society. Funding some lazy cocksucker's lifestyle of boozing and playing Xbox 360 all day is called "welfare." The poverty line in this country is set at like 13,000 dollars a year when the typical person world wide, billions of them, don't even make 5 U.S. dollars a day. Everybody in the White, Western world thinks he's poor and never wants to pay taxes. Taxes are only for "rich people" which are magically defined as "anybody making more in government handouts or money than me."

Cliff owned shops in S.F. and el-Lay. He had a "silent Parnter" in both, but I don't know who it was. He, together with Dale Grande and Buddy McFall, bought out Lyle Tuttle in L.A., then He bought out Buddy, then finally Dale traded his half of the L.A. studio for Cliff's half of Chicago Tattooing Company. The man was a trip, for sure, and you know, all of them tolerated a kid hanging around their shop watching and waiting...now that's class. Course I spose they figured they'd make their money back from me in a few years-and they did!

Well, the Coasts have both been written up, so I guess I have to throw in my vote for Chicago. Cliff Raven. I don't usually like linking to Wiki, but this is a fairly concise and accurate summation of his career. Cliff Raven - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia While it is accurate, it doesn't really convey just how much of an influence the man had. When I first started hanging around his shop at WAY too young an age, Buddy McFall was still working there, and it was a pretty rough and tumble place. Phil Sparrow was there at times, as was Tats Thomas. Cliff was called "The Father of Modern Tattooing in America" by those in the know in this area. He may have been, or he may simply have been one of the earliest and most influential advocates of Japanese-style tattooing. Continuing his style, and also his renown, were some of his apprentices, especially Dale Grande, who still owns Chicago Tattoo, and Bob Benedetti. That line continues with the man I consider to be one of the finest traditional tattooists in the world, Nick Colella, (Tattooing by Nick Colella) and with another outstanding artist, deeply immersed in the Japanese tradition, Miles Maniaci. ({ Miles Maniaci }) BTW, that's my arm in the "Progress" section. It seems that these tattooists get short-shrift in books and print in general, and that's a shame...Chicago Tattooing is literally a shrine to the art. There is original flash on the walls by Cliff, Dale, and Nick, along with such greats as Sailor Jerry, Don Ed Hardy, Tats Thomas, and many others. Cliff was named "Tattoo Artist of the Year" at the very first International Tattoo Convention in 1976, and shortll after bought out Lyle Tuttle's shop in Hollywierd. While there, he tattooed many celebs, including Ringo Starr. I got tattooed by Nick Colella a few weeks ago, and he told me that he is hoping to continue the thread on tattooing history in Chicago he had started here as soon as he got a minute free from ink-slinging. The man is busy, but you can still get a walk-in with him without too much difficulty. So give Chicago it's due, some of the heaviest names of tattooing in the modern age came out of here! Add another to your list, Bunny...you can book a spot with Nick, chat with Dale while you're there, and then maybe hit Miles the same day-he works out of Deluxe Tattoo, not too far from Chicago Tattooing Company. I am fortunate to have work by by Dale, by Miles, and by Nick, and have more planned with Nick. .02

  19. I really don't think Ami's hate the poor more than anyone else, merely that most Americans recognize that if you are "poor", yet can afford what most consider to be luxuries, i.e.; cigarettes, alcohol, etc., then you aren't poor, but rather lazy, or at best, making some really funky choices.

Henry Goldfield of SF. Still tattooing. From his site: Henry Goldfield established Goldfield's Tattoo Studio in 1977 on the Embarcadero in San Francisco. One year later Henry moved his shop to its present location in San Francisco's famous Broadway Strip where the street was teeming with locals, sailors and tourists. A master of many trades Henry is known worldwide as one of the profession's finer artists, and is considered a pioneer of modern tattooing styles.

    Knee Tattoooo

Geometrics, mandalas and flowers work really well on kneecaps. I decided to get mine filled in with a mandala by Jondix and will probably do a matching one on the other knee. I like these sorts of designs for the "in between" places, if you're not planning on using up the whole leg for a continuous design. And, btw, was almost painless!
