    Tattoo age on VBS

still watching them, still telling friends who are interested in real tattooing about them, and still always excited a bit when this thread gets bumped... only to have my hopes of new episodes dashed away. i'm assuming lots of members have that last experience as well.

  11. First off- congrats on your decision to get tattooed! It's a big personal step and I'm glad you've decided to bring the entire internet full of strangers into that decision-making process! I was a little upset when you suggested we weren't living up to our potential. Frankly, it reminded me of the many times I'd heard that statement from parents, teachers, and employers. But I'm a lemonade from lemons kinda fella, so I decided to take your statement as a challenge and present you with my concept of your tattoo idea. I've spent sometime playing Draw Something (up to my first color pack!), so I have some experience with bring people's words into artistic reality. So here it is- don't worry about paying me, it's about paying it forward :D

    Obscene Tattoos

Yeah, Woody does tattoos, but he's more of a cartoonist. The interviewer isn't the only twat in the frame. So a famously publicity hungry tattooer, who's notoriously fond of gimmicks invests in a super-deluxe tattoo removal lazer. Because he had virtually no tattoos already, he tattoos deliberately inflammatory statements on himself then does a photo shoot and speaks to every interviewer who'll listen. No prizes for guessing what publicity grabbing event happens next... Yeah, this is the same tattooer who called a client and offered to tattoo the Jacko arrest photo with the words "Peado Cunt" FOR FREE. Although the client was a fool to accept the offer, he was a young student with little money who liked tattoos. Who, in that situation would refuse a funny, free tattoo? That client has since had a massive coverup of a traditional eagle. Woody also tattoos drunk metalheads for free at the UK Download festival. I'm a tattooer. Woody does tattoos. We are not doing the same thing. Irresponsible is the kindest thing I can say about his work and work ethic.

  16. there's a lot of different kinds of hipsters out there... fixie hipsters, conceptual art hipsters, trust fund hipsters, Williamsburg hipsters... it never ends. and they are fairly present in the UK as well. i spent five months abroad at an art college in Wales, and it was about 98% full on hipsters. in London, from what i understand, Shoreditch is a popular spot for them.

  17. I think you may have misunderstood me; I am nowhere near a 2xBW bench! I've benched 225 for a single a number of times, which is about 1.5xBW. I recently dipped BW+77x3 (at the time, that came out to about 235 total pounds). I guess bench and dip are just really different. One possible cause of the discrepancy: I have a nagging left elbow issue (golfer's elbow) that flares up on bench at times, but never on dips. I'm currently trying to put on a few more pounds and worry less about overall body comp. When my pants get too tight, I'll cut a little again. :) Speaking of cutting, good luck with your prep! I'm sure that the mind games are rough. @kylegrey might have tips for you on that front.

    Stigmas?

I forget how tattooed/tattoo accepting a city Philadelphia is until I read threads like this. I'd KILL to have a waiter/waitress not bring up my tattoos, show me theirs, etc. The last time I went to court (Jury duty, 3 years ago- oddly, going again in two weeks) I had both a Bailiff and a judge comment on my tattoos (positively) while waiting for a danish at the free breakfast table. My mortgage broker asked me "where do you get your work done" while I was closing on my house. My doctor has a backpiece. I dunno. I feel it a little when I travel outside of Philly, but even in the middle of buttfucknowhere I tend to get positive reactions. Perhaps it's my charming dimples.

    Stigmas?

I get more 'stigma' from my wife than anyone else. "Make sure you wear long sleeves when you come to the kids' school function!" Even in short sleeves 90% of my ink cant even be seen. I wore a T-shirt in the family swimming pool for the first year or two til I decided to just say F-it. No one said anything though. ;-) I was showing my sister my rib panel the other day and she said "What do you mean 'subtle' -- that thing is huge!!" And by a 'subtle approach' I meant most of my ink can't be seen under typical circumstances. But no one has ever thrown drinks at me nor followed me around a department store...I just don't have enough ink showing. :-( As far as expecting any 'stigma' to go away...don't hold your breath. If you look different you'll be treated differently. It's a fact. First-impression-perception-based prejudice is a human instinct -- it's how we recognize the HOME team vs. the VISITORs... It's how we distinguished the UNION from the CONFEDERATES. COWBOYS vs. INDIANs. HUMANS vs. MARTIANs. The best we can do is make a good second impression.

    General Movie Thread

Saw 'Cabin in the woods' yesterday. Echos of 'Buffy the vampire slayer', as you might expect from it being produced by Joss Whedon. I mean that in terms of the cast (a lot of regular Whedon actors getting roles) and some of the themes. Whedon is a big feminist, so you've got a subversion of the 'whores get punished, virgins might survive' staple of slasher movie lore. Actually a lot of the reviews and chatter about this movie have pushed the postmodern ironic critique angle of this movie, although to be honest I'm not sure that it's really strong enough to trundle along with all that baggage. This is a clever and fun movie, but I'm not sure it's really the groundbreaking incisive piece of work that some critics would like it to be. Didn't we do ironic reinvention years ago with 'Scream'?

  27. we had a guy have a seizure at the counter of the shop where i work this week. he was there to ask about advertising... next thing you know, the two tattooers in the shop have him under the arms and i'm holding a big soft chair in place that they tried to guide him into, but he was locked up in such a way that he was only about halfway in. also, whoever he had listed on his medical bracelet didn't pick up their phone when the paramedics tried calling them. big help they were. the best part was the look in the eyes of the girl who showed up for her appointment while the EMTs were getting him some oxygen and asking him the standard questions.

Thanks for signing up though a little concerned for many reasons about the tattooing....... Anywho you live in a good location with great tattooers so you and your friends should just go get tattooed by them and don't waste your or others skin with bad tattoos. 42. At the moment I'm easing back into training after a lay-off due to a neck injury with a simple upper / lower body split based around DB benching, bodyweight exercises and a lot of single-leg exercises like rear leg elevated split squats and single leg squats. A lot of mobility work, a lot of prehab/rehab with bands and light weights. Ramping up back into normal training although I don't think I'll be going back to BJJ any time soon. As time has passed I have made progress using various programmes and approaches, and I'm inclined to agree with Dan John ( Dan John, Lifting and Throws Coach - great coach ) when he says 'everything works [for a while]'. The caveat I would add is that you can also injure yourself or self-limit your progress dramatically by trying to implement the wrong programme, having poor technique, screwing up your diet, not sleeping enough yadda yadda yadda. I think, if I were going to go back in time and start all over again, I would begin from the ground up in this way:- 1. I would learn how to begin my training with a proper dynamic warm-up. A joint mobility warm-up from the likes of Mike Boyle ( Strength Coach.com | Strength and Conditioning | Sports Training ) that will ensure I had the joint mobility where I needed it, and the joint stability where I needed it. Some folks need a more stable lower back ... Some people need to loosen up their hips. Neglecting something can lead to an injury down the road, or limit your lifts. 2. I'd either find a good coach or I'd pick a classic strength programme that has worked for thousands of other people in my shoes. I'm talking Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength, or Bill Starr's 5X5 or Joe Difranco's WS4SB. Something that is there in black and white, with nothing exotic that is time-tested and well-regarded by shitloads of smarter people than you. Typically what they all have in common is lots of the fundamentals : A horizontal push, a horizontal pull, a vertical push, a vertical pull, some shoulder work, some posterior chain stuff and big knee-dominant squat variation. Most of the programmes I mentioned there are good all-round strength programmes that will put a bit of mass on a novice or intermediate trainee. If I wanted to go for more hypertrophy and mass gain I'd maybe consider something like Poloquin's German Volume Training. If I were just looking to compete in power lifting or oly lifting I'd get a proper coach and maybe follow a Westside or Mike Burgener / Greg Everett programme. Basically, I'd follow the track already well-worn by proven programmes and coaches. 3. I'd perfect my technique and make sure I was moving well with sub maximal weights before I started to try and get strong. I've added weight on top of poor movement patterns and the result is always fucked up. Less weight, executed perfectly = the foundation to add weight safely later and more progress in the long run. 4. I'd eat better. 2g of protein for every kg of bodyweight minimum. I'd watch my carbs and I'd eat more fat than 'most people' think is a good idea instead. For me I think the stuff the likes of Robb Wolfe and Mark Sisson have written about eating the way our paleolithic ancestores ate makes sense to me, but your mileage may vary. It's a pretty good way to strip fat off, but if you're a powerlifter or bodybuilder I think you need to eat a little dirty to get the necessary calories to pack on muscle. 5. I'd try and sleep 8 hours a day, which is unworkable in my current job. I'd take my rest days seriously and not bike, run, do a martial arts class... I'd rest and let my body do its job and adapt to the training I was doing the rest of the week. 6. I'd study the fuck out of articles and books about sports injuries and try and figure out ways to avoid common issues people have, again and again, like knee problems and rotator cuff problems. I'd do things like make sure my pressing to pulling ratio (say, bench to pullup) exercise ratio was at least 1:1 in my programming, and more like 1:2 if I were feeling twinges in my shoulder. If I had bad knees I'd do single leg work to bullet-proof them before things went south. If I had a bad back I would do core work and chuck out anything that heavily compressed it (like back squats, deadlifts) for a while. Education = good. So is having the number of a good physio with a proven tack record. 7. For fat loss and conditioning I think once your diet is right the best approach is old school : Carries, drags, pushes, bodyweight circuits, sprints / shuttle runs, kettlebells ... Anaerobic > long slow distance work most of the time, IMO. I reckon that's most of my philosophy:- 1. Learn enough not to get injured. 2. Pick the right programme for you and implement it properly. 3. If it goes wrong go to a professional and let them fix you. And repeat until you're put in a box and buried. Whenever I read one of those news cuttings about some curmudgeonly old veteran who is still working out at 80 and puts some teenage mugger in hospital with his cane, I think - 'I want to be that guy when I'm that age'.

    Rose tattoos

There is no such thing as the best rose. Its not a competition, more of an appreciation, repulsion, or somewhere in between. My personal fave is Henry Goldfield, He rules the rose in SF His chest piece is a giant rose from Oakland's Shakey Jake done in the early 60's I believe. Many tattooers and their families wear Henry's roses. I don't have photos available right now , but I wear one and my wife has a 3/4 sleeve of 3 roses from Henry. When I got mine, he gave me the drawing which proudly hangs in the shop. Next to the rose it says" Dean, here's your rose. Follow the rose in life and you'll never go wrong. Good luck to you." Most of the roses I see today are very well done in a variety of styles. I like rose tattoos with a black outline made by people over 50. But hey, whatever you're into, there's room for it all.
