    Art thread.

Local dude Panhandle Slim aka Scott Stanton has been(illegally-ish) putting up his paintings all over town recently, as opposed to his standard hanging & selling them in galleries. Pretty cool stuff. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=297975868496&set=a.209074463496.129527.814093496&type=3&theater#!/profile.php?id=814093496 some of you might remember Scott from the 80s

  4. 6 hours on the back yesterday... It's a little sore today. Shading is harsher then outline and yesterday was shading over the ribs. Everyone that came over to take a look said the same thing "I'm glad my back is done". Then they talked about what a bitch getting a back piece is!!!

  9. Kevin Martin's Razor X Productions is also crazy- Industrial dub/ ragga DnB: I was in the drum n bass/ rave scene from 95' to about 00', so I watched that sound and style evolve. But my intro to all this was Meat Beat Manifesto, Renegade Soundwave, and Massive Attack. I'm still a big DnB fan, but mainly really dark stuff like Ed Rush/ No U-Turn, Current Value, Cooh, Gein,

  13. hear is a funny quote from john welborn who runs crossfit football taking a little stab at his/my own ilk "Any crowd that shuns supplements, shoes, strength and curls is confusing. Any demographic striving for elite human performance should be looking to increase recovery, muscle and strength. The same confusion extends to the people who won’t wear shoes when they lift because it is not functional or do not think strengthening your biceps brachii through isolated single jointed movements has benefit. If your goal is elite human performance, things like supplements to aid in recovery, shoes to increase your lifts and curls to strength your biceps brachii for pulling movements makes total sense." ps - I have been "crossfitting" (don't really like this term as i know it has a dirty connotation to some) for 5 years and love it. I was a division 1 college athlete and have been involved in strength and conditioning for a long time. It's certainly not the only way to train, but it works great for me - Like anything open source, that grows as quickly as CF has, you are going to have good and bad coaches. Somebody has mentioned the mobilitywod.com It is a great source and I am lucky to say that Kelly is my coach at San Francisco Crossfit. If I am not there doing kipping pull-ups you will find me in my garage following westsides conjugate method or running up and down my block dragging chains behind me. Peace & Love - Now lets go pick some heavy things up and put them back down.

Here's some that I've done. I don't get into the studio much but I hope to soon and will explore a new direction. All ideas and no time right now. Intaglio prints onto rice paper. I made this for my wife. It's of the antique schooner we sailed on on Maine. This one seems relevant these days...painted just over four years ago.

    Ink Masters

It's just fucked plain and simple. I don't understand it either. It's the same format as Inkmasters but like a thousand times more annoying. I don't know any of the contestants personally, so the tone may have a lot to do with the way it is produced and the target demographic. I tried to buy into the theory that there are better tattooers on this show but I haven't seen anything I would be that stoked to wear thus far. The only good part is that it is on demand and i can fast forward through commercials and dialogue and just get to the tattoos.

    Any metalheads out there?

On the topic of tattooers in good bands: jondix has a doom band...........Tas is in Electric Wizard, Thomas Hooper had a pretty cool band (rainy day fuck parade). Jef Whitehead is so damn talented but from an outsider looking in he seems to be his own worst enemy.

  23. Got this on a whim last Friday the 13th. Tim @ Anthem Tattoo in Gainesville FL drew a sheet of 13 flash and numbered 'em, 1 to 12 or whatever. You come in, pay $13, pick a number out of the hat, and there's your tattoo - unless you don't like it. Then you pay another $13 and pick again. He tattooed each design once. (I was first in line, zipping over on my lunch break from work, and picked my favorite on the first go.) If he does it next week I may show up again.

    Artist Uniforms

Uniforms? Hell no. At our shop we all know what we're there to do and are actually trusted to dress ourselves. We're professionals. Our shop stresses customer service too...in cleanliness, demeanor and quality. Hell I've walked customers to their cars when they're scared at night...but no, never a uniform. Frankly, I think uniforms set up an us-and-them vibe and a shop is the last place that needs to be . I'm as likely to wear a Blitz tshirt as a Penguin button down but either way, clean and in good repair and buttoned so it doesn't drag across my tray when reaching for things. Also, our front person acknowledges every client when they walk in, then let's them to it. They know who to talk to. The Rollo remark is dead on. People cry about how no one takes us seriously but show up stinking in a dumpsterdweller costume. That's not usually "that guy's" only problem. Chances are if you show up to work at our shop looking like your clothes came from a rag bag, we're not going to have a sit-down about your clothes but respect and your approach to work.

  32. I just finished this painting yesterday... possibly the best idea i've ever had for a piece (including the 12 foot wood/metal straight razor sculpture i made that actually folds away). sorry for the watermarks, but i'll probably post this in a few places that increase it's likelihood of sharing without sourcing. Kuniyoshi warriors, of course. https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/534680_10100488762403191_17026783_47484761_1466466552_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/554828_10100488762148701_17026783_47484759_1139198157_n.jpg they're a bit large, hence URLs in place of the images. EDIT: also, planning a 2'x3' woodcut version of this for the future (i dual majored in printmaking and sculpture). mainly did the painting as a color study... carving will probably occur in the summer, printing in the fall.

  33. I grew up in a hippy ass section of Minneapolis called the West Bank, and there were a few biker bars on the south end of the neighborhood. I remember I was about 8 years old when I really noticed them and thought they were rad as shit. On another note, I remember when my son first noticed tattoos as something unnatural on the body. When he was 3, he was sitting on my lap when his eyes locked onto my arm. He grabbed my arm firmly and scanned it over with intense focus...then let out the words "cool, dad"

    Ink Masters

@ShawnPorter - so for example, we get in as canvases, tell the tattooer "what we want" and then the next day spend 4 1/2 of the 5 hours allocated for tattooing saying thats not what we want and getting them to change it? All the while telling them what kind of meats they smell like?.. I can dig it.

    TAM issue 29

Great fucking read! Just had to say it. @Scott Sylvia, that Jason McAfee interview made me laugh my ass off! Extra stoked he mentioned Deftones for khaki Dickies.. even if he peed 'em. Jondix and Tim Lehi interviews, too. And for those of us (myself included obviously) who are not tattooers, go find a shop/friend who is willing to share it give it a read. Good stuff. And no.. not on the payroll at TAM, just had a great time reading through it this morning. Best way to start the weekend!

    Stigmas?

I recently offered to help my friend move his girlfriend out of her parents house. She told me that I needed to wear long sleeves because her parents would not let me into their home with visible tattoos. They didn't get my help moving.

    Celebrity Tattoos

The thing about Mark Wahlberg getting lasered because he was 'concerned about the message he was giving his kids' is old news. I'd never really seen his tattoos before, but clearly that message he was avoiding giving his kids was "Dad makes horrible tattoo choices":
