  3. Got this from Bob Roberts today. It was a good time at Spotlight. Bob was super nice and cool, and I also got to talk with Grant Cobb, who was really nice as well. And he is great tattooer if you are not familiar with his work you should be.

  6. Recently some young guy came in with a brown pride tattoo and needed it covered up for Army. Whoever he spoke to at the Army told him he couldn't get a big tattoo, he had to try to cover it with two smaller tattoos. It turned out okay he has a panther covering one word and an eagle covering the other. The only thing that looks odd to me is having the tattoos right next to each other. If you choose to only get 2 tattoos, usually you don't cram them in one spot. Would have been nice to do just a big panther. Getting a Chris Trevino tattoo sounds like a much better idea than joining the Navy.

  13. I thought we could use a thread that shined a little light on some of the artists we love, but aren't necessarily very renowned or getting the recognition we feel they deserve. Lets get the ball rolling.... I've been a fan of the work of James Tex of Deadly Tattoos inc, located in Calgary, Canada, for a few years now. I'm sure a lot of you are familiar with his work, and some members here might even know him personally and/or have tattoos from him. Anyways, I stumbled across him a while back in another tattoo forum where a member showed off the progress of a Samurai sleeve he was getting done from Tex. I was blown away by his work, and to my great viewing pleasure he had a fairly large online portfolio on his shops website: Deadly Tattoos inc. I'm not sure if everyone agrees with me in that he's "low key", but I can't say that I have read an article about him or seen any pictures of his tattoo except on his website (and obviously the forum I mentioned). Here's a few samples of his work from his online portfolio:

  14. hear is a funny quote from john welborn who runs crossfit football taking a little stab at his/my own ilk "Any crowd that shuns supplements, shoes, strength and curls is confusing. Any demographic striving for elite human performance should be looking to increase recovery, muscle and strength. The same confusion extends to the people who won’t wear shoes when they lift because it is not functional or do not think strengthening your biceps brachii through isolated single jointed movements has benefit. If your goal is elite human performance, things like supplements to aid in recovery, shoes to increase your lifts and curls to strength your biceps brachii for pulling movements makes total sense." ps - I have been "crossfitting" (don't really like this term as i know it has a dirty connotation to some) for 5 years and love it. I was a division 1 college athlete and have been involved in strength and conditioning for a long time. It's certainly not the only way to train, but it works great for me - Like anything open source, that grows as quickly as CF has, you are going to have good and bad coaches. Somebody has mentioned the mobilitywod.com It is a great source and I am lucky to say that Kelly is my coach at San Francisco Crossfit. If I am not there doing kipping pull-ups you will find me in my garage following westsides conjugate method or running up and down my block dragging chains behind me. Peace & Love - Now lets go pick some heavy things up and put them back down.

  15. That's what I did ;-) When we first did something on my shin (which was going to be large and symmetrical), we dealt with the same problem: I have very flat feet and walk "like a duck". If I line up my feet straight and bend my legs, my knees will actually collide in the centre very easily. So, do we centre it for when I walk, or when my feet are pointed straight? Figured my feet were never pointing straight anyway (quack), so let's centre it so it's straight when I walk/stand normally. After adding all the background, it was a moot point anyway!

  21. For mine, my knee tattoo is slightly off centered, but my shin would be straight down with the knee. It may sound wierd having a knee thats a little off, but my leg is japanese so its a leaf and background. It works...

  23. An old friend of mine recently showed me a sort of icon / statue which looks as if it was hacked off an altar at some stage. He has no idea what the providence of the piece is, but he's reportedly had it for a number of decades and originally bought it in an antique store / flea market type place in Dublin. He's asked me if I know anyone who could tell him a bit more about the piece (guess he's finally gotten around to it) - specifically, who is depicted and what aspect of them? Who are the attendants, is that a turtle or a tortoise etc. Some of you guys are pretty sharp on your buddhist iconography - anyone got any ideas? Since it looks like it might be Chinese (to me, at least) I've e-mailed a Taiwanese artist I know.

  24. Mark Rippetoe on beer drinking and training (from his Q&A forum):- He's speaking to more of a strength-focused approach, as opposed to someone who is interested in losing bodyfat and improving other aspects of their fitness, but it's basically sound advice: Drink in moderation if you can. If someone is trying to lose weight or otherwise get lean then I guess drinking several thousand calories of beer every couple of nights is clearly going to retard that process, no matter how hard you hit the gym during the day.

  29. I agree. There is a similar aspect to kettlebells as there is to crossfit. Religious... Many HC people only praise the basic movements (snatch etc) to obsession. That you shouldnt think outside the box. Similar to doing this and that machine in the gym and not doing compounds. Similar but not.

  30. @lving4today Don't do long static stretches before working out. I do that stretch either early mornings (when I lift in the afternoon) or my non-leg days. @hogg The box squat is an incredible tool. The bench squat, not so much, haha. @Jaycel Adkins I can respect kettlebell training, it can be pretty hard and fast paced, but I can't say much more on it. It does not provide the results that I am interested in. Although, I do take my 35lb KB and throw it for height. That's fun. Practice for the Highland Games, haha. FWIW I used to use Chucks but I can't find a comfortable pair that fit my wide foot. I've been lifting in Vibrams for about 5 years now.

Good Points. Celebrity host is just so viewers have a familiar face, since most people without tattoos don't follow careers of tattooers. I guess as far as judging I guess it just depends on the person. Even people that get tattooed by good people don't necessarily know anything about tattooing, some people just get lucky or are famous enough to fall into the right shop. Personally I think they would be better off bringing back Tattoo Wars. It was a more even playing field and seemed to attract better tattooers and it's always in the particular tattooers style so it sets the clients up to get better work. Either that or make a show called Scratchers and use the theme music from COPS.

  35. I a glad to be here and have a place to share some of the insights i have been saddled with for the last six years since the beginning of the exploitation of tattooing . I have been asked to contribute on here by my long time friend Scott Sylvia . For those people i don't know yet , I have been tattooing for 23 years and owned and operated a shop in Hollywood called True Tattoo until i made the decision to sell it to Oliver Peck .I would have never sold it to him if i had known he was going to go do a TV show . I have since relocated to Kona Hawaii and now work at Eastern Classics tattoo .

  38. I hear ya. This happened a lot at the last shop I worked at. My default fix was to put long eyelashes on it if the piece is an animal. If its a inanimate desgin I just use the power of suggestion after drawing up the design and telling them, "see what I did there? (points to whatever) That's to give it a more delecate feminine vibe" They almost always go with it.

  48. I have some pretty bad ones I will never mess with ,because of association. one of them is by the late Eric Hogan. he was by no means a great friend , more like someone I knew, But I will always remember him, His mother would probably appreciate this. During these times that seem sometimes like a "cool" race, we need to remember the whys and hows people have always gotten tattooed. As a tattooer/ist we ,especially street shops, face it everyday. those silly reasons mean something to those not in the know. your Moms love, your children's love, you went somewhere, you freed yourself, don't forget. They aren't just cool. Last evening I put stick figures holding balloons on a woman's foot, I tried to put them on with all the professionalism that i could. If those don't meet anyone's ideas about what good art is or what a cool tattoo is,it doesn't matter. she talked about how she went to a different shop and they were rude about it. I did a good job, she was happy, I got to eat dinner doing something I want to do,not something i have to do, Im not cleaning toilets ,Im not a Walmart greeter. not that good hard work isn't respectful , Its that I'm lucky and hopeful today. And yes I will try and give them the best stick figures they need. I do love me some "regular people".
