  3. the lady and her friend were in the shop getting tattoos so i had to go up there and say hi...and just like i hoped one of the other tattooers wasn't busy it's awesome getting something from a tattooer that's been doing it since before many of us were even born also awesome that he's perfectly happy tattooing it just like it is on the sheet, and he'll take his time even though it's just a little piece of flash

  6. You having lots of room may be part of the equation, James. There are some tattooers who feel that 'public' tattoos- hands, neck, fingers, faces- are better suited to people who've already significantly covered. What folks were saying is that there might be more than one dynamic at play here.

  8. I just saw the Sears thing on Tumblr. Crazy. And, I just got an email back from the VP of merchandising at Dick Blick saying that due to responses to their carrying Skin Candy inks, they "are reviewing [their] product selections and will respond responsibly," whatever that means. It all seems like a form response to me.

  9. I worked for Amazon for nine years and have a certain amount of (near post traumatic stress) distain for the company; I only talk about them when I'm being a cunt. Oh. They also carry gallon jugs of 100% pure wolf urine; which we were going to mix with the uranium, put in a super soaker and see if we could mutate us some Teen Wolfs....

  11. I just came across this thread. I'm taking the MSF course this weekend, i'm really excited. I am looking at used Honda Shadows in the 600cc range for my first bike. I always wanted to ride...my ex-wife was so adamently against it I never seriously considered it...but then again, she was against a lot of fun stuff. :p

  12. Agreed. Nothing pisses me off more than seeing someone with their throat and hands done, but with nothing else. Not saying you are that type of fella. I won't get my hands and throat done until everything else is almost done, but it will happen eventually. I can't wait to be the Dad who shows up to PTA meetings wearing Dad clothes but covered in rad tattoos.

    Dumb Hipster Tattoos

@Anisya I'm a little late to the party here and I haven't yet watched the Helvetica documentary so what I say may be covered there. In my opinion Helvetica a beautifully designed typeface (it was a typeface before it was a font) which is why it got so overused by cool-guy graphic designers for a while. Anything visual that is used extensively will be rejected by the generation that follows. But blah, blah, blah... Helvetica is the type equivalent of 'pike style' tattoo lettering. In the hands of someone who knows what they are doing, it just fucking works. Always readable and because of subtle variations, always appropriate. It can look shitty in the hands of an idiot who thinks its easy and doesn't understand the basics. ...I mostly butted in because the BBC uses Gill Sans, not Helvetica. Another very well designed typeface, digitised exceptionally well for screen use. But very different from Helvetica to a trained (or partially trained) eye. Most 'big corporations' don't use Helvetica. They may use a bold, sans-serif font, but it's rarely Helvetica itself. Comic Sans is one of the few fonts deemed appropriate when designing information for people with learning and/or sight difficulties because the lower-case letters are constructed the same as handwriting. The problem with most graphic designers is they are trying to express themselves instead of communicating in an effective manner. I guess most younger designers now wouldn't even know what a serif's function is. Comic Sans is a fuck-ugly font though. More dumb tattoos now please.

    LSTer Skateboarders

Does anyone have or has seen the "Skinned Alive" dvd? It's a documentary about the correlation between skateboarding & tattooing. LST's Tim Hendricks has an interview & a part where he tattoos Eric Dressen's back. Eric Dressen also has an interview where he brings up Clay Decker who I saw just joined the forum. It also has the Godoy brothers, Fred Smith, Mark Mahoney, Danny Romo, Neil Heddings, Bill Danforth, Jason Jessee & a few other dudes. It's worth it just to see the Jason Jessee part...shit's hilarious!

  23. There's definitely some good examples of healed palms on that thread. This board has a higher caliber of artists than you'll find just bumping around locally too. I didn't intend to sound overly negative. It was that the poster came across as saying if you're good you can do it. I'm just saying we all heal differently and there's a greatly increased likelihood with that spot that it won't hold up. No artist is in control of another person's physiological variables.

  24. Welcome to LST and much of the feedback I was gonna give has been given. Curiosity, how much of the rest of your body is covered in tattoos? Is lack of coverage another possible reason they are deciding not to do it?

  25. Amazon used to carry uranium. $26 a tin. True story. They also recently allowed an author to publish a book on their kindle book creator app on how to molest children.... So yeah. Tattoo supplies won't make them loose any sleep.

    Dumb Hipster Tattoos

I too am a designer, and I use Helvetica and Univers when I want to create a Swiss style poster or minimalist layout. It's a beautiful typeface. But the same can be said nowadays for how many companies are using the Gotham typeface. It's gorgeous, but the market is over-saturated with it. It's a fine line, I like to pull in Brockmann, Carson, Timothy Samara, and Bierut as my daily influences. As for a Helvetica tattoo, it's hipster pastiche, whatever, they don't know shit about Thom DeVita.

Nice! Those featherbed frames are so roomy you can drop just about anything into them. I'd love to build up a proper cafe racer...but then those low bars and rear sets are the last thing my back needs. When you get it started, drop by britbike.com. There's a lot of knowledge on that board...then post pics!

  31. Reality - some people care very little about the quality of their tattoo, they just want a tattoo. And some of these people want the best possible 'deal' (first cost) on the tattoo. And still some people think it's cool to get tattooed by their friend in his house while getting stoned. It's part of the experience and (old-school, underground) tradition for them! And it's a valid argument in a free world. Not for me, however, and it's not for me to say or assess someone else's risk tolerance. Perhaps it's like religion and politics, in that we tend to create the 'tattoo tradition' in our own (individual) image. I know, I know -- it's nothing like religion, nor politics, it's like tattooing and tattooing is different.

  32. @Turquoise Cherry I think it's 'context sensitive' some places it seems right that the staff have visible tattoos, others not. It varies from city to city and job to job. Visible tattoos don't belong in M&S. That above article didn't make it clear what charity work the girl was doing nor who for. It did make it clear that she became argumentative. If I argue, even as a customer, they have the right to ask me to leave. If I was volunteering, you could be damned sure I wouldn't argue with the staff who were playing host to my charity work. Just because you work for free it doesn't mean you can be a dick about it. There's still some responsibility to be professional. I guess my perception of 'tattooed people' is different from most. The majority of my customers are at least skilled professionals, some are craftsmen, some are lawyers, bankers, accountants. Many are self employed or own a business or company. Most of them don't discuss their tattoos with their co-workers, even more don't show them. You can bet most of them don't show them outside of our shop, conventions or maybe the gym. These are the kind of people I have respect for. The kind who don't flaunt their tattoos at the grocery store. then complain when someone doesn't like it. @Dan S once you decide to get a tattoo, for yourself, you are weird. I dont care what anyone else says. A freak is somewhere between that and a bodysuit. except me. I'm normal and everyone else is weird. - but really, your question doesn't have a standard answer but that doesn't weaken my point. Believe it or not, we at Frith Street have a "dress code" If you don't have tattoos, you can't work with us. We think that's fair. To be honest I find it sorta dull and small-minded to discuss the pros and cons of if adults who deliberately chose to do something they know isn't totally acceptable across the board, should bitch and whine when someone points out that it's not totally acceptable. An extreme example: If a nudist who likes to hang around without clothes, does it at a nudist/naturist beach or resort, good for them. Adults exercising their freedoms and hobbies in a mutually agreeable, non-harmful manner. If they do it at a schoolyard at playtime... Context is everything.

  33. I just got home from our little trip to LA, and I brought a friend: I went to Bob Roberts and asked him for one of his tiger heads. He saw the spot I had open and furrowed his brow. "That's gonna be tough." He tried to sketch something on, but I could tell he was kinda flustered, so I said, "Ya know, I also really like your spiders." He lit up and said, "Now you're talkin'!" He drew it on and knocked it out in half an hour. All in all, it was a great, great experience. He and I chatted about music and, of course, tattoos. He asked to see my back, then said, "I got a snake on my back, too." He then proceeded to melt my face off by showing me his Ed Hardy backpiece, as well as his Horiyoshi III torso pieces. Coolest fucking dude ever, and I am beyond stoked on my black widow.

  34. She should have thought about that before getting visible tattoos or heavy tattoo coverage. M&S isn't Vans, Top Shop, Urban Outfitters etc. What did she expect? Lately American Apparel have been shying away from hiring heavily tattooed people. I think this is great. I'm sick of seeing heavily tattooed people in every coffee/clothes/record/food shop. No I'm not being sarcastic. It's time for people who make themselves look like freaks to accept the fact that they are freaks and stop whining that nobody accepts them in the non-freak world. Nobody forced that girl to get tattooed, she wasn't born tattooed, it was her choice, regardless if she volunteers for charity work. Are long sleeves and a high collar too much trouble when working with the public?

    Chest/Torso Tattoos

Cool thread! That first piece is killer, but her right hand and left arm looks a little bit strange to me. Maybe just the picture, or maybe just me... I don't know. The piece as a whole looks really bad-ass though! Most of you have already seen my front piece, but I found a better picture of it on Marius' blog a while back, so here's to those who haven't seen it already (sorry about the insane size of the photo)

  36. Here's mine. When I was first pursuing an apprenticeship, I talked to one of the artist's at the best shop around. He invited me over to his place where we talked about it, mostly over his old Triumph. I drove him around for bits and pieces he needed to fix it up and by the end of the day, he had given me tips on presenting my portfolio of drawings and said he'd put in a good word for me...not schmoozing, just an organic conversation...then after all his wrenching and swearing, he kick started that bike. The look and sound had me hooked and hanging around at the shop after that when he'd pull up...I had to have an old Triumph. As it turned out, unbeknownst to me, he was moving. I was apprenticed to take his place. Having married young, there was never any money for extras (or three meals some days) but I worked hard for years, doing my best to be good to tattooing and it rewarded me. When I found this 68 at the right price, I jumped on it and when I see my bike in front of the shop, I feel like it came full circle.
