I don't think it's a strictly "Chicano" thing, or a "black" thing (actually you didn't see tattooing making much of an inroads in the black community in general until reletively recently, and prior to that the tattoos they'd have we're very basic, and almost never photo realistic portraits. Blacks in general were very conservative anout tattoos until the mid 2000s. Before that You'd see political tattoos, black power, racial themes or tribal, pan african themes, on them, very basic lettering, maybe old English.) Whites and hispanics in the california prison system got them. It came from the same genre as fantasy themed tattoos, Aztec motifs and Viking imagery (if the wearer was on a white power trip). Stuff inmates had, bikers had, sometimes military, gang members had. Portraits were a 1970's thing and southern California thing specifically. It came from prison and was disseminated into the public sphere informally through home tattooing, and then formally through various influential tattooers and tattoo magazines.

  7. My first tattoo was done when I was 15. A tattooer called Steve, as far as I can remember, in Bath. My first visit to the shop was with a couple of pals. I went first, I think we all decided on a swallow on the forearm. Anyway I had a bit of a rash on my forearm. The tattooer asked me about the rash. I said it was probably a sun rash. He said ok come back when it's gone. So my first visit ended in bitter disappointment. The next in the chair was my mate Pete. He always fancied himself as a bit of a tough guy, but he was looking very nervous. So the tattooer started the tattoo. He did the outline on this tiny tattoo and was about to start on the colour when my mate said " you don't have to colour it in do you". The tattooer, looking rather puzzled said "no not if you don’t want me to". We really took the piss out him on the train on the way home. What a pussy. I went back a few weeks later with two pals and we all had the same deaths head tattoo on our forearm. Ones now dead the other had his covered. So mines the only one left. That was 41 years ago and I still love that tattoo. So much so that I booked Alex Binnie to recreate the tattoo on my upper leg on April 13th.

    Lightest Handed Tattooer

By the way the thread title should have been "Lightest Handed Tattooer" not handest. :o

  9. There is such a thing as a Light handed tattooer? I always thought it was a myth, like Bigfoot or the abimondible snow man. Actually there was one guy who tattooed me with quite a light hand, but it took him 6 hours to do a 2 hour tattoo (of course he charged by the hour), so by the end I think it hurt just as bad as any other tattoo session.

    Chicano Tattoo Style

roots of "Chicano tattooing" can be traced back a long way, but what was really influential on the art form was the tradition of public murals, especially in east LA in the mid to late 1960s. These murals were scattered all over Los Angeles, in nearly every barrio neighborhood, but you had a concentration of them in the projects. Places like Ramona gardens, Estrada courts, aliso village, dogtown (not the venice dogtown, butthe dogtown projects, by the LA river, near chinatown) Sometimes they were political. The themes generally revolved around racial pride, community disenfranchisement, Aztec and mayan mythology, Lowrider culture, pachuco culture etc. Tattoos were and are an extension of that tradition. That was the era. The end of the viet nam war, a massive increase in the prison population in California and the rise of biker culture. It just happened that Cartwright and negrete and Rudy where there at the right time in the right place. They had credibility in the broader tattoo culture, and exposed that style far beyond califas. It was seen as an underworld, undesirable thing, then it became chic for a time.

I'm heading to NY in April. So the new guy is 2 months old. I'm shipping the mother-in-law to help my wife with the 2 little ones. It's a win-win, my wife has some help. Gets to hang out with her mother and I'm not there for the entire visit.

  14. I hear ya. This happened a lot at the last shop I worked at. My default fix was to put long eyelashes on it if the piece is an animal. If its a inanimate desgin I just use the power of suggestion after drawing up the design and telling them, "see what I did there? (points to whatever) That's to give it a more delecate feminine vibe" They almost always go with it.

  15. Yes sir it is!!! I have 3 straight days booked with him. We discuss going as long as 6-8 hours each session.... Looking forward to seeing the progress that's made!

  17. there is so much chat on this thread about numbers....who gives a shit. If you like the person,if you like the work, thats all that matters. there are so many good tattooers nowadays that I have never heard of. ''long after the sweetness of a cheap price has worn off,the tattoo is still there'' .....everyday I am confronted with shoppers, Its tiresome. this kind of crap, is why very few know who I am, I burned out and quit. If ya aint got no bread, ya cant get a tattoo. just remember, for the 1 that's tryin there's 20 that suck, and have no business in it. A lot of the people on here live nowhere near San Diego. Turn off your computer, start walkin, drive your car, get a buddy to drive ya,take the bus, whatever.go get a mark. It might suck,It might be a good one. At least, start livin.wow I just looked at yer profile ,an almost retired marine ,yer supposed to have some crappy devil dog already.hell I just did one yesterday and Im nowhere near a marine base.....Here's the problem nowadays,...too many options.Too many choices. Its just a fu#KIN tattoo.

    Lightest Handed Tattooer

Thanks! I was (and am) super stoked on it. I'll have to post a healed pic now that it's 5 years old--still looks great. I've also had tebori from Horitomo, but that was a very different affair. He uses a much longer instrument and it definitely felt like more than just a little pressure.

  30. Some of my tattoo, consists of dotwork. So I think that’s generally a bit easier. The rest of the tattoo was really easy. I did comment how gentle he was. He said it wasn't a conscious thing on his part, its just the way he tattoos. 6 hours to do a 2 hour tattoo charged by the hour? Now that is painful.

  31. holy shit really? My inner bicep was the worst place I have ever tattooed. I actually saw stars near the armpit.
    1 point
  32. I got some ghost flames near my armpit from Horimasa of the Horitoshi family. He hand-shaded it (tebori), and believe it or not, I barely felt it. I asked my wife if he was putting in color. She couldn't believe I had to ask her. I'd also like to nominate not Chris Treviño as the lightest handed tattooer.

  41. Don't know if this has been brought up, but when people ask for something feminine it kind of confusing to me, usually because each person means something different and usually has nothing to do gender. First usually the person is asking you to give gender characteristic to either an intimate object like a ship, a gender neutral design like a flower, or animal where male and female aren't really that different, my example of this would be an owl. Usually it's not a case of slapping a pair of tits or an evening dress or a tiara on the tattoo. I mean usually they are referring to not making the drawing as bold or to not use as much black, sometimes they want the drawing more new school or cartoon like. Sometimes it's the colors they want you to use in the tattoo. I usually point out that femininity can't really be lost by getting a tattoo, which is what people are putting into these young girls heads.

  42. We have the love and hate one up on the wall twice one right side, one upside down. IF you pick the love it's 20 dollars cheaper, but haven't had anyone notice it yet or get it for that matter. Have had a couple people come in recently with stuff like this, but I can't remember what the ones they wanted said. I think one was beloved and cursed.

  43. I generally let the artist do what he or she wants to do or is stoked about doing! I have found that if an artist is excited about doing the tattoo that i generally am going to get their best work and they usually are happier and more talkative because they are finally doing something they want to do not something the customer has asked them to do! This could also be why i have 2 vaginas, 3 dildos, and a penis tattooed on me too.....but hey....I have no regrets and love every single tattoo i have in my collection! :)
